Pleiotrophin deletion prevents high-fat diet-induced cognitive impairment, glial responses, and alterations of the perineuronal nets in the hippocampus.

Neurobiol Dis

December 2024

Department of Health and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, Universidad San Pablo-CEU, CEU Universities, Urbanización Montepríncipe, 28660 Boadilla del Monte, Spain. Electronic address:

Obesity and metabolic disorders, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) facilitate the development of neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline. Persistent neuroinflammation plays an important role in this process. Pleiotrophin (PTN) is a cytokine that regulates energy metabolism and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced neuroinflammation, suggesting that PTN could play an important role in the connection between obesity and brain alterations, including cognitive decline.

Background: Patient notes contain substantial information but are difficult for computers to analyse due to their unstructured format. Large-language models (LLMs), such as Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4), have changed our ability to process text, but we do not know how effectively they handle medical notes. We aimed to assess the ability of GPT-4 to answer predefined questions after reading medical notes in three different languages.

The effects of single chromosome number change-dysploidy - mediating diversification remain poorly understood. Dysploidy modifies recombination rates, linkage, or reproductive isolation, especially for one-fifth of all eukaryote lineages with holocentric chromosomes. Dysploidy effects on diversification have not been estimated because modeling chromosome numbers linked to diversification with heterogeneity along phylogenies is quantitatively challenging.

Traditional postero-medial ankle approach for Bartonícek type III in Volkmann Fractures: Is it useful?

Foot Ankle Surg

December 2024

Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona, Spain; Clínica Nostra Senyora del Remei, Barcelona, Spain; Unitat d`Anatomia i Embriologia Humana, Spain.

Introduction: There is evidence that the presence of a posterior malleolus fracture (PMF) worsens the prognosis of ankle fractures, making conservative treatment a poor choice. PMFs include a heterogeneous group of bone injury patterns that are sometimes associated to medial malleolus extensions, as well as fibula fractures or syndesmotic damage. This requires the surgeon to be well-versed in anatomy to choose the appropriate surgical approach.

Targeting immune evasion in hepatocellular carcinoma-initiating cells.

Trends Immunol

December 2024

Cancer Signaling and Microenvironment Program, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA, USA. Electronic address:

Tumor-initiating cells (TICs) are particularly efficient at evading detection and elimination by the human immune system. Recent data from Yang and collaborators demonstrate that - at least in preclinical hepatocellular carcinoma models - the immunological privilege of CD49f TICs can be limited by targeting CD155, resulting in restored sensitivity to immune checkpoint inhibitors.
