The present study, focused on a population of dogs infected with canine leishmaniasis, aimed to decipher the volatolomic profile associated with this disease in dogs, which represent the main animal reservoir for Leishmania pathogen transmission to humans. The volatiles emitted by the breath and hair of dogs were analysed employing the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique.

Background: Issues related to sport teaching at different educational stages is a subject of wide interest. Teaching Games for Understanding has been established as the most effective way to teach students the elements related to the field of sport. The objectives of this study were (a) to examine the impact of the Teaching Games for Understanding model on decision-making in sports education and (b) to compare the effect of the interventions analysed according to educational stage.

Introduction: There is evidence that the presence of a posterior malleolus fracture (PMF) worsens the prognosis of ankle fractures, making conservative treatment a poor choice. PMFs include a heterogeneous group of bone injury patterns that are sometimes associated to medial malleolus extensions, as well as fibula fractures or syndesmotic damage. This requires the surgeon to be well-versed in anatomy to choose the appropriate surgical approach.

Background: There is a current fashion for the use of methacrylate-containing nail cosmetics that can induce allergic contact dermatitis. European Union (EU) legislation was introduced in 2021 that had the aim of preventing its development.

Objectives: To assess prevalence and exposures causing contact allergy to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) prior to and following implementation of the legislation.

E3 ubiquitin ligases have been linked to developmental diseases including autism, Angelman syndrome (UBE3A), and Johanson-Blizzard syndrome (JBS) (UBR1). Here, we report variants in the E3 ligase UBR5 in 29 individuals presenting with a neurodevelopmental syndrome that includes developmental delay, autism, intellectual disability, epilepsy, movement disorders, and/or genital anomalies. Their phenotype is distinct from JBS due to the absence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and the presence of autism, epilepsy, and, in some probands, a movement disorder.

Impact of malnutrition on the clinical evolution in a cohort of older patients undergoing emergency surgery for abdominal pathology.

Purpose: Analyse the influence of the nutritional status of older patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery on postoperative complications, mortality and mean length of hospital stay.

Methods: We performed a longitudinal observational study including patients older than 80 years who underwent emergency surgery by the general surgery service for abdominal pathology, who were followed by the geriatrics service between September 2018 and May 2021. Malnutrition was diagnosed using Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, classifying patients as malnourished and normonourished.

Microcystins (MCs) are cyclic heptapeptides originating from various cyanobacteria in eutrophic aquatic environments. Their potential consequences on ecosystems and public health underscores the need to explore MCs' occurrence. In this study, liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) analysis and a suspect screening workflow supported by open-source tools were employed for the determination of MCs in freshwater and biota samples from a eutrophic dam in Uruguay.

Surveillance and environmental risk of very mobile pollutants in urban stormwater and rainwater in a water-stressed city.

Urban stormwater and rainwater in water-stressed cities serve as critical vectors for the transport and dispersion of pollutants, including very mobile compounds These pollutants, which can be influenced by factors such as land use, rainfall intensity, and urban infrastructure, pose significant risks to both human and environmental health. Although several priority pollutants have traditionally been detected in urban stormwater, little is known about the presence of very mobile compounds that may threaten urban drinking water supplies and pose environmental risks to aquatic species. In this study, 131 urban rain and stormwater samples were collected from three districts of Barcelona (Spain) and analysed for 26 very mobile pollutants that are often overlooked in conventional monitoring efforts.
