Exploring motivation, goals, facilitators, and barriers to adopt health behaviors at retirement age: a focus group study.

Background: This study qualitatively investigates retirement-age adults' perspectives on engaging in health behaviors such as physical activity or a healthy diet, distinguishing facilitators, barriers, goals, and motivations (the two later in line with Self-Determination Theory).

Methods: Two clinical psychologists conducted four focus groups with Spanish adults around retirement age. We conducted inductive and deductive content analysis.

Identification of strengths and weaknesses of the healthcare system for persons living with rare diseases in Catalonia (Spain), and recommendations to improve its comprehensive attention: the "acERca las enfermedades raras" project.

Background: Rare diseases (RDs) are a heterogeneous group of complex and low-prevalence conditions in which the time to establish a definitive diagnosis is often too long. In addition, for most RDs, few to no treatments are available and it is often difficult to find a specialized care team.

Objectives: The project "acERca las enfermedades raras" (in English: "bringing RDs closer") is an initiative primary designed to generate a consensus by a multidisciplinary group of experts to detect the strengths and weaknesses in the public healthcare system concerning the comprehensive care of persons living with a RD (PLWRD) in the region of Catalonia, Spain, where a Network of Clinical Expert Units (Xarxa d'Unitats de Expertesa Clínica or XUEC) was created and is being implemented since 2015.

Background: Super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE) is an extremely serious neurological emergency. Risk factors and mechanisms involved in transition from refractory status epilepticus (RSE) to SRSE are insufficiently studied.

Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients diagnosed and treated for RSE at two reference hospital over 5 years in Ecuador.

Globally, medical device software must follow regulatory processes based on risk classification. The introduction of MDR represents a significant shift in risk-based classification for Medical Devices in Europe, including classification Rule 11 for software, which has caused significant discussions among European regulators.

Pediatric eosinophilic fasciitis: similarities and differences with adult forms.

The purpose of this study was to identify pediatric eosinophilic fasciitis, which is an extremely rare condition, in order to describe their clinical, paraclinical, and therapeutic characteristics. We made a call for observations via societies for pediatric rheumatology in France and surrounding countries and collected clinical and paraclinical data of the cases fulfilling the diagnostic criteria. Eight patients under 18 years of age with confirmed eosinophilic fasciitis followed between April 2004 and July 2022 in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain were included.

Chromatin environment-dependent effects of DOT1L on gene expression in male germ cells.

The H3K79 methyltransferase DOT1L is essential for multiple aspects of mammalian development where it has been shown to regulate gene expression. Here, by producing and integrating epigenomic and spike-in RNA-seq data, we decipher the molecular role of DOT1L during mouse spermatogenesis and show that it has opposite effects on gene expression depending on chromatin environment. On one hand, DOT1L represses autosomal genes that are devoid of H3K79me2 at their bodies and located in H3K27me3-rich/H3K27ac-poor environments.

To reduce greenhouse emissions and producing electricity with the smallest environmental impact, developing solar power technology is one of the most important milestones to achieve. Thus, to improve the efficiency of the concentrated solar power (CSP) plants, with lower environmental impact, is of great interest. This work reports the development of nanofluids, a colloidal suspension of nanomaterials in a fluid, based on an environment-friendly base fluid for improving the performance of the heat transfer process in CSP plants.

Direct collaboration between hospitals and NGOs, an essential tool to reinforce linkage to care in people living with HIV.

With the aim of improving access and engagement to healthcare in people living with HIV (PLHIV), in 2022 Gregorio Marañón Hospital and the NGO COGAM developed a circuit for recruitment and referral to hospital. Program targeted PLHIV who were neither receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART) nor on medical follow-up (FU); but also, individuals at risk who underwent screening tests at the NGO and, if positive, were referred for confirmation. The result was an increase in annual new PLHIV seen in hospital by reaching a population who were, essentially, young men (94% male, median age 30 years), migrants (95%) with recent diagnosis of HIV (median 5 years) and who were recently arrived in Spain (median 5 months).

The Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, severely threatens citrus production worldwide by transmitting the greening (= Huanglongbing)-causing bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. There is growing evidence that the push-pull strategy is suitable to partially mitigate HLB by repelling ACP with transgenic plants engineered to produce repellents and attracting the vector to plants with a minimal disease transmission rate. Species that pull ACP away from commercial citrus plants have been identified, and transgenic plants that repel ACP have been developed.

Totally implantable central venous catheters (CVCs) are widely used in the management of patients with malignant diseases. Conventionally, port implantations were carried out by general surgeons and vascular radiologists. In recent years, the medical staff of the Medical Oncology department at the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) has developed a simplified methodology for the routine implantation of these devices.

Methods: Four databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase were systematically searched for studies published between January 2010 and July 2023. Methods: This descriptive retrospective observational study assess a case series of newly arrived maritime migrants to the Canary Islands who were diagnosed with clinical and microbiological SSTIs and admitted to the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria Hospital in Tenerife between January 2020 and December 2023. Clinical data, bacterial species, resistance profiles, and choice of empirical treatments were analysed.

The role of nutritional vitamin D in CKD-MBD in children and adults with CKD, on dialysis and after kidney transplantation - a European consensus statement.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and associates with poor outcomes. Current clinical practice guidelines recommend supplementation with nutritional vitamin D as for the general population. However, recent large-scale, clinical trials in the general population failed to demonstrate a benefit of vitamin D supplementation on skeletal or non-skeletal outcomes, fueling a debate on the rationale for screening for and correcting vitamin D deficiency, both in non-CKD and CKD populations.

MAdPHOS, a P-Stereogenic Aminodiphosphane Ligand with Adamantyl Groups: Synthesis, NH/PH Tautomerism, and Rhodium and Nickel Complexes.

A novel chiral ligand, named MAdPHOS, bearing a P-stereogenic phosphane and a diadamantyl phosphane linked by a NH bridge has been synthesized. Introduction: ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is one of the most prevalent presentations in young patients. It is essential to emphasise that each minute of delay in providing medical care is negatively correlated to the patient's prognosis. The present study was carried out to evaluate the ischaemia-reperfusion times in patients ≤40 years of age versus individuals >40 years of age and their association with mortality and major adverse cardiac event (MACE) over the long term.

Destined for destruction: The role of methionine aminopeptidases and plant cysteine oxidases in N-degron formation.

The cysteine/arginine (Cys/Arg) branch of the N-degron pathway controls the stability of certain proteins with methionine (Met)-Cys N-termini, initiated by Met cleavage and Cys oxidation. In seeding plants, target proteins include the Group VII Ethylene Response Factors, which initiate adaptive responses to low oxygen (hypoxic) stress, as well as Vernalization 2 (VRN2) and Little Zipper 2 (ZPR2), which are involved in responses to endogenous developmental hypoxia. Nivolumab plus ipilimumab versus nivolumab in microsatellite instability-high metastatic colorectal cancer (CheckMate 8HW): a randomised, open-label, phase 3 trial.

Background: CheckMate 8HW prespecified dual primary endpoints, assessed in patients with centrally confirmed microsatellite instability-high or mismatch repair-deficient status: progression-free survival with nivolumab plus ipilimumab compared with chemotherapy as first-line therapy and progression-free survival with nivolumab plus ipilimumab compared with nivolumab alone, regardless of previous systemic treatment for metastatic disease. In our previous report, nivolumab plus ipilimumab showed superior progression-free survival versus chemotherapy in first-line microsatellite instability-high or mismatch repair-deficient metastatic colorectal cancer in the CheckMate 8HW trial. Here, we report results from the prespecified interim analysis for the other primary endpoint of progression-free survival for nivolumab plus ipilimumab versus nivolumab across all treatment lines.

Methods: Finalists' season-best finishing race time, 100-m section times, and intermediate positions were obtained from 800- and 1500-m men's and women's finals in 2 Olympic Games and 5 World Championships. Differences between medalists, fourth- to eighth-ranked (T8), and ninth- to 12th/13th-ranked finalists in relative performance (relative to season-best), race time, and section times were determined.

VAE-Surv: A novel approach for genetic-based clustering and prognosis prediction in myelodysplastic syndromes.

Background And Objectives: Several computational pipelines for biomedical data have been proposed to stratify patients and to predict their prognosis through survival analysis. However, these analyses are usually performed independently, without integrating the information derived from each of them. Clustering of survival data is an underexplored problem, and current approaches are limited for biomedical applications, whose data are usually heterogeneous and multimodal, with poor scalability for high-dimensionality.

Health networking on cancer in the European Union: a 'green paper' by the EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise (JANE).

Health networking is in principle a formidable instrument to address many challenges posed by cancer, one of the two most common and most lethal non-communicable chronic diseases. The European Union (EU)'s Beating Cancer Plan foresaw the addition of new health networks to the four already existing European Reference Networks on rare cancers: the Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres and several networks of expertise (NoEs), which will be shortly deployed on items as complex and poor-prognosis cancers, palliative care, survivorship, personalised primary and secondary prevention, omic technologies, hi-tech medical resources, and cancers in adolescents and young adults. The community of experts of the EU Joint Action, due to build such NoEs, has drafted this 'green paper', incorporating 13 open questions, in an effort to foster discussion on some open questions about health networking on cancer in the EU.

Detecting temporal synchrony in audiovisual speech in infancy is fundamental for socio-communicative development, especially for language acquisition. Autism is an early-onset and highly heritable neurodevelopmental condition often associated with language difficulties that usually extend to infants with an elevated likelihood of autism. Early susceptibilities in still unclear basic mechanisms may underlie these difficulties.

Searching for sexually transmitted infections by midstream urine pooling after exclusion of urinary tract infection: A cost-effectiveness analysis.

We aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of screening for sexually transmitted infections (STI), Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Trichomonas vaginalis in patients with suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) but negative urine cultures, using a pooled sampling method. A cohort of 200 patients was analyzed. A decision tree model based on cost-effectiveness was used to evaluate the following five diagnostic strategies: (A) no screening;(B) screening only men;(C) screening only women;(D) screening men and women with high leukocyte counts (>70cells/µL);(E) screening all men and women.
