Background: Long-term fasting demonstrates greater therapeutic potential and broader application prospects in extreme environments than intermittent fasting.
Method: This pilot study of 10-day complete fasting (CF), with a small sample size of 13 volunteers, aimed to investigate the time-series impacts on gut microbiome, serum metabolome, and their interrelationships with biochemical indices.
Results: The results show CF significantly affected gut microbiota diversity, composition, and interspecies interactions, characterized by an expansion of the Proteobacteria phylum (about six-fold) and a decrease in Bacteroidetes (about 50%) and Firmicutes (about 34%) populations.

Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are a class of organic polymer materials constructed by aromatic 1,3,5-triazine rings with planar π-conjugation properties. CTFs are highly stable and porous with N atoms in the frameworks, possessing semiconductive properties; thus they are widely used in gas adsorption and separation as well as catalysis. The properties of CTFs strongly depend on the type of monomers and the synthesis process.

Purpose: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) refers to involuntary leakage from the urethra, synchronous with exertion/effort, sneezing or coughing, which has a negative effect on quality of life. Studies have shown that mild-to-moderate physical activities reduce the risk of SUI by multiple mechanisms. The objective of this study was to determine whether the Rumba dance combined with breathing training (RDBT) can reduce the severity of incontinence and improve the quality of life of patients with SUI.

Microgravity influences are prevalent during orbital flight and can adversely affect astronaut physiology. Notably, it may affect the physicochemical properties of saliva and the salivary microbial community. Therefore, this study simulates microgravity in space using a ground-based -6° head-down bed rest (HDBR) test to observe the effects of microgravity on oral salivary secretion function and the salivary microbiome.

Fasting shows great potential in preventing chronic diseases and has to be surmounted under some extraordinary circumstances. This study aimed to investigate the safety, time effects of metabolic homeostasis and health indexes during prolonged fasting. Thirteen participants were recruited to conduct a 10-day complete fasting (CF) in a controlled health research building under medical supervision including 3-day Baseline (BL), 10-day CF, 4-day calorie restriction (CR) and 5-day full recovery (FR).

Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) is a closed artificial ecosystem which can regenerate oxygen, food, water and other substances for crew survival in long-term space missions. Solid organic waste is a vital resource pool for material reuse and recycling in CELSS. In this study, solid wastes including wheat straw and food waste were disposed via aerobic composting under functional microbial agent inoculation.

Waste recycling is pivotal for deep space exploration or space habitation in life support systems (LSS) to enhance the material closure. This study investigated the enzymatic pretreatment and solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) of wheat straw as the major component of biomass waste in LSS for resource reclamation. Wheat straw compounds, such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin were significantly degraded after pretreatment with degradation at 37.

Accurate time perception is clearly essential for the successful implementation of space missions. To elucidate the effect of microgravity on time perception, we used three emotional picture stimuli: neutral, fear, and disgust, in combination with a temporal bisection task to measure 16 male participants' time perception in 15 days of -6° head-down bed rest, which is a reliable simulation model for most physiological effects of spaceflight. We found that: (1) participants showed temporal overestimation of the fear stimuli in the middle phase (day 8), suggesting that when participants' behavioral simulations were consistent with the action implications of the emotional stimuli, they could still elicit an overestimation of time even if the subjective arousal of the emotional stimuli was not high.

Breast cancer (BC) is a common disease and one of the main causes of death in females worldwide. In the omics era, researchers have used various high-throughput sequencing technologies to accumulate massive amounts of biomedical data and reveal an increasing number of disease-related mutations/genes. It is a major challenge to use these data effectively to find drugs that may protect human health.

Waste management and treatment is vital to health care and material circulation, especially in the Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) with finite resources for long-duration manned space missions. A closed ecological-cycle integrated 4-crew 180-day experiment platform was established to investigate the key technologies such as effective cultivation of higher plant, water treatment and recycling, waste management and treatment. In this study, generated waste during the integrated experiment was classified as renewable and non-renewable waste.

The Chinese Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) is designed including a closed-loop system supporting 4 healthy volunteers surviving for 180 days, and we aim to reveal the temporal characteristics of the oropharyngeal and nasal microbiota structure in crewmembers stayed 180 days in the CELSS, so as to accumulate the information about microbiota balance associated with respiratory health for estimating health risk in future spaceflight. We investigated the distribution of microorganisms and their dynamic characteristics in the nasal cavity and oropharynx of occupants with prolonged confinement.

There is a body of evidence that the aging immune system is linked to cancer. In this study, with aging- and immune-related DNA methylation data, we investigated the DNA methylation regulation changes in promoters with other regions of genes during aging and their association with the immune-cell proportion in the circulating whole blood of individuals. The analyses for aging- and CD4+ T cell proportion-derived differential genes showed that ubiquitination plays an important role in the aging immune system and tumorigenesis.

During a spaceflight, astronauts need to live in a spacecraft on orbit for a long time, and the relationship between humans and microorganisms in the closed environment of space is not the same as on the ground. The dynamic study of microorganisms in confined space shows that with the extension of the isolation time, harmful bacteria gradually accumulate. Monitoring and controlling microbial pollution in a confined environment system are very important for crew health and the sustainable operation of a space life support system.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is effective in the prevention and treatment of cancer, congenital disorders, and various chronic diseases. According to the omnigenic hypothesis, these complex diseases are caused by disordered gene regulatory networks comprising dozens to hundreds of core genes and a mass of peripheral genes. However, conventional research on the disease intervention mechanism of DHA only focused on specific types of genes or pathways instead of examining genes at the network level, resulting in conflicting conclusions.

Physiological changes in humans are evident under environmental conditions similar to those on a Mars mission involving both a space factor (long-term isolation) and a time factor (the Mars solar day). However, very few studies have investigated the response of the liver to those conditions. Serum protein levels, bilirubin levels, aminotransferase activities, blood alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, lipid levels, and serum cytokines interleukin-6 and interferon- levels were analyzed 30 days before the mock mission; on days 2, 30, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 150, and 175 of the mission; and 30 days after the mission, in four subjects in 4-person 180-day Controlled Ecological Life Support System Experiment.

Recent evidence suggests that adipokines are involved in the regulation of bone metabolism. Ctrp4 is a newly discovered member of the adipokine CTRP family. Studies have shown that Ctrp4 is involved in the regulation of tumor cell inflammatory signaling pathways and acts on the hypothalamus to regulate food intake, but its role in osteoblasts is not yet clear.
