Background: During the domestication of silkworm, an economic insect, its physiological characteristics have changed greatly. RNA-based gene duplication, known as retrocopy, plays an important role in the formation of new genes and genome evolution, but the retrocopies of lepidopteran insects have not been fully identified and analyzed, which not only severely limits researchers from exploring the effects of retrocopies on lepidopteran insects but also affects the studies on the domestication of silkworm.

Methods: We compared the genomes and proteomes of eight lepidopteran insects and used a series of screening criteria for auxiliary screening to obtain the retrocopies in lepidopteran insects and explored their characteristics.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant tumor characterized by a high degree of invasiveness, and since zinc-α2 glycoprotein (ZAG) has been implicated in the progression of several malignancies, this study was designed to investigate the role of ZAG in CRC. Its expression was assessed using the GEPIA database, and short hairpin RNA (shRNA) interference was conducted to create ZAG knockdown in CRC cell lines. We also conducted lipid synthesis, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) experiments to elucidate the effects of ZAG expression on CRC, as well as explored the potential underlying mechanistic pathways.

It is long been suggested that one-carbon metabolism (OCM) is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), whereas the potential mechanisms remain poorly understood. Taking advantage of chemical biology, that mitochondrial serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT2) directly regulated the translation of ADAM metallopeptidase domain 10 (ADAM10), a therapeutic target for AD is reported. That the small-molecule kenpaullone (KEN) promoted ADAM10 translation via the 5' untranslated region (5'UTR) and improved cognitive functions in APP/PS1 mice is found.

Background: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and lethal primary brain tumor with a poor prognosis. The C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) has shown abnormal expression associated with progression of multiple malignancies, however, its role in predicting the prognosis and immunotherapy response of GBM remains poorly understood.

Results: CCL2 was highly expressed in GBM as analyzed by integrating CGGA, GEPIA and UALCAN online platforms, and further verified by histologic examinations, qRT-PCR analysis, and independent GEO datasets.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between sleep quality and bone mineral density (BMD) in urban residents.

Methods: Data of 28 756 Han adults (14 355 males and 14 401 females), who completed both Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) assessment and radial BMD tests by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in the Health Management Center of Southwest China University from June 2012 to June 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. The degree of sleep disorder was determined based on PSQI scores, while osteopenia and osteoporosis was diagnosed according to BMD T-value.

The incidence of thyroid nodules has been increasing worldwide; however, there are currently no feasible and robust methods to differentiate malignant thyroid nodules from benign thyroid nodules. The present study aimed to establish a practical method to determine the malignancy of thyroid nodules. Reverse transcription‑quantitative PCR and western blot analyses were performed to compare the levels of long non‑coding RNA nuclear enriched abundant transcript 1 (NEAT1), microRNA (miR)‑9, miR‑124, PTEN and programmed cell death protein 6 (PDCD6) in the peripheral blood and thyroid tissue samples between patients with malignant and benign thyroid nodules.

Background: The initial factor in the occurrence, development, and prognosis of cerebral ischemia is vascular dysfunction in the brain, and vascular remodeling of the brain is the key therapeutic target and strategy for ischemic tissue repair. Catalpol is the main active component of the radix of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch, and it exhibits potential pleiotropic protective effects in many brain-related diseases, including stroke.

Purpose: The present study was designed to investigate whether catalpol protects vascular structure and promotes angiogenesis in cerebral ischemic rats and to identify its possible mechanisms in vivo and in vitro.
