Water-in-water (W/W) Pickering emulsions, exhibit considerable potential in the food and pharmaceutical fields owing to their compartmentalization and high biocompatibility. However, constrained by the non-uniform distribution of shear forces during emulsification or the spatial obstruction in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) passive microfluidic platform, the existing methods cannot generate monodisperse W/W Pickering emulsions with high particle coverage rate, thereby limiting their applications. Herein, a novel microfluidic system is designed for the preparation of monodisperse and highly particle-covered W/W Pickering emulsions under mild conditions.

The application of high-performance rubber nanocomposites has attracted wide attention, but its development is limited by the imbalance of interface and network effects caused by fillers. Herein, an ultrastrong polymer nanocomposite is successfully designed by introducing a superhydrophobic and mesoporous silica aerogel (HSA) as the filler to poly(methyl vinyl phenyl) siloxane (PVMQ), which increased the PVMQ elongation at break (∼690.1%) by ∼9.

By their paternal transmission, Y-chromosomal haplotypes are sensitive markers of population history and male-mediated introgression. Previous studies identified biallelic single-nucleotide variants in the SRY, ZFY and DDX3Y genes, which in domestic goats identified four major Y-chromosomal haplotypes, Y1A, Y1B, Y2A and Y2B, with a marked geographical partitioning. Here, we extracted goat Y-chromosomal variants from whole-genome sequences of 386 domestic goats (75 breeds) and seven wild goat species, which were generated by the VarGoats goat genome project.

Traditionally fermented yak yogurt as a Tibetan dairy product is high not only in nutrients but also in probiotics. A probiotic strain with a potential lipid reducing effect was isolated from yak yogurt. An animal model for hyperlipidemia was evaluated using the blood index and expression levels of lipid metabolism-related proteins in mice to determine the effect of Lactobacillus casei YBJ02 (LC-YBJ02) on lipid metabolism in hyperlipidemic mice and the underlying mechanism.

A Comparative Study of the Effects of Ultrafiltration Membranes and Storage on Phytochemical and Color Properties of Mulberry Juice.

J Food Sci

December 2019

Authors Fuhua Li, Huiming Yan, Weizhou Li, Jichun Zhao, and Jian Ming are from College of Food Science, Southwest Univ., Chongqing, 400715, China.

We investigated the influence of both the clarification by ultrafiltration membranes with 100 or 18 kDa molar weight cut-off (MWCO) and subsequent storage on phenolic properties and color of mulberry juice (MJ). Results showed that clarification by the ultrafiltration membrane with 100 kDa MWCO elevated levels of total polyphenols (↑11.4%), total monomeric anthocyanins (↑87.

Jasmine scented black tea is widely popular in China and the scenting process is the most crucial issue affecting its aroma quality. This study aimed to analyze the influence of different processes on aroma quality and the specific contribution of volatiles to aroma quality. To achieve it, the headspace solid-phase microextraction method combined with gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry was used to identify and quantify the volatile compounds, and further collected the characteristics according to odor activity values or contents.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined the effects of capsaicinoids and Lactobacillus plantarum SWUN5815 on cholesterol levels in ovariectomized rats, discovering that their combination significantly reduced cholesterol, triglycerides, and liver fat without impacting food intake.
  • - Five groups of rats were tested: a control group and four groups receiving various treatments with capsaicinoids and/or Lactobacillus, and animals were sacrificed after six weeks to measure outcomes.
  • - Key findings indicated that the combination increased bile acid levels while decreasing several gene expressions related to cholesterol metabolism, suggesting enhanced cholesterol excretion and reduced synthesis, which may protect intestines in ovariectomized rats.

Progress on the Antimicrobial Activity Research of Clove Oil and Eugenol in the Food Antisepsis Field.

J Food Sci

June 2018

College of Animal Science and Chongqing Engineering Research Center of Veterinary Science, Southwest Univ., Chongqing Rongchang, 402460, China.

As potential and valuable antiseptics in the food industry, clove oil and its main effective composition eugenol show beneficial advantages on antibacterial and antifungal activity, aromaticity, and safety. Researches find that both clove oil and eugenol express significantly inhibitory effects on numerous kinds of food source microorganisms, and the mechanisms are associated with reducing the migratory and adhesion and inhibiting the synthesis of biofilm and various virulence factors of these microorganisms. Clove oil and eugenol are generally regarded as safe in vivo experiments.

Resistance to pesticides has been studied in several insect pests, but information on the natural enemies of pests-including the Neotropical predator Chrysoperla externa Hagen (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), a major biological control agent in South America-is lacking. We report here a comparative study between a field-collected strain of C. externa subjected to monthly sprayings of pyrethroids and neonicotinoids and a laboratory strain without exposure to pesticides.

The fruits of Fortunella Swingle are widely consumed as fresh fruits and traditional medicine in China. China is the origin center and has the largest cultivated area of the genus Fortunella. In this study, the chemical compositions of ethanol extracts of the major Fortunella cultivated types including Fortunella japonica Swingle, Fortunella margarita Swingle, Fortunella crassifolia Swingle 1 (Lanshang) and Fortunella crassifolia Swingle 2 (Liuyang) were determined using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC Q-TOF/MS) method, and their antioxidant activities were evaluated.

Implications of Mycobacterium Major Facilitator Superfamily for Novel Measures against Tuberculosis.

Crit Rev Eukaryot Gene Expr

May 2016

Institute of Modern Biopharmaceuticals, State Key Laboratory Breeding Base of Eco-Environment and Bio-Resource of the Three Gorges Area, School of Life Sciences, Southwest University, Chongqing, China.

Major facilitator superfamily (MFS) is an important secondary membrane transport protein superfamily conserved from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. The MFS proteins are widespread among bacteria and are responsible for the transfer of substrates. Pathogenic Mycobacterium MFS transporters, their distribution, function, phylogeny, and predicted crystal structures were studied to better understand the function of MFS and to discover specific inhibitors of MFS for better tuberculosis control.

Unlabelled: Soluble dietary fiber and antioxidants have received much attention as most important components of functional foods. However, few data are available on the effects of the combination of tea polyphenols (TP) and β-glucan (BG) on blood glucose in a diabetic rat. The effects of administration of barley BG and TP or their combination (TP + BG) on blood glucose, lipid profiles, and antioxidant parameters on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were investigated.
