Aim: The continuous update of international guidelines and enhanced availability of biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) and targeted synthetic DMARDs (tsDMARDs) have made a significant impact on the diagnosis and treatment of early rheumatoid arthritis (ERA). This study aims to systematically evaluate the current treatment strategies and outcomes within a large-scale cohort of patients with ERA.

Methods: Data from the Chinese Registry of Rheumatoid Arthritis (CREDIT), a large multicenter Chinese registry of RA, were collected to analyze temporal trends in clinical profiles, therapeutic strategies, and treatment outcomes among patients with ERA.

Background: The association of lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) with various cardiovascular events has been well-established. However, the exploration of its potential involvement in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is currently limited. Therefore, our study aims to examine the relationship between Lp-PLA2 and pulmonary conditions, including emphysema, obstructive ventilatory dysfunction as well as small airway dysfunction, to provide further evidence of a possible association with COPD development.

Background: Occult Macular Dystrophy (OMD), primarily caused by retinitis pigmentosa 1-like 1 (RP1L1) variants, is a complex retinal disease characterised by progressive vision loss and a normal fundus appearance. This study aims to investigate the diverse phenotypic expressions and genotypic correlations of OMD in Chinese patients, including a rare case of Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy (VMD) associated with RP1L1.

Methods: We analysed seven OMD patients and one VMD patient, all with heterozygous pathogenic RP1L1 variants.

SRY-box transcription factor 30 (SOX30) participates in tumor cell apoptosis in lung cancer. The occurrence of somatic SOX30 mutations, the expression signature of SOX30 in normal and cancer tissues, the correlation of SOX30 with immune cells and immune-related genes, and the clinical significance of SOX30 in various cancers have stimulated interest in SOX30 as a potential cancer biomarker. SOX30 influences drug sensitivity and tumor immunity in specific cancer types.

Background: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a heritable condition with an as yet unclear etiology. Various factors, such as genetics, lifestyle, environment, inflammation, insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, iron metabolism, and gut microbiota, have been proposed as potential contributors to PCOS. Nevertheless, a systematic assessment of modifiable risk factors and their causal effects on PCOS is lacking.

Electronic address:

Background: In patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) treated with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), the presence of moderate-to-severe interface hepatitis is associated with a higher risk of liver transplantation and death. This highlights the need for novel treatment approaches. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether combination therapy of UDCA and immunosuppressant (IS) was more effective than UDCA monotherapy.

Background: The distally fixed stem used in revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA) with extended trochanteric osteotomy (ETO) is subject to periprosthetic fracture, stem subsidence, and stress shielding. The prospective multicentric study aimed to assess the clinical and radiographic outcomes, and complications of using the Corail revision stem in rTHA with ETO.

Methods: Sixty-four patients undergoing rTHA with ETO using the Corail revision stem between 2019 and 2020 were enrolled in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • Voriconazole (VRZ) is essential for treating severe invasive aspergillosis, and accurate measurement of its plasma concentration is crucial for effective treatment and minimizing side effects.* -
  • This study validated a UPLC-MS/MS method for measuring VRZ levels and compared it with the EMIT method, finding a high correlation but poor consistency between the two techniques.* -
  • The research established important treatment thresholds for VRZ effectiveness and safety, revealing significant discrepancies between the two methods' results at these thresholds, although adjusted EMIT readings showed better alignment with UPLC-MS/MS outcomes.*

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have durable and remarkable antimicrobial effects on pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, in dental plaques. As such, they are widely added to dental restoration materials, including composite resins, denture bases, adhesives, and implants, to solve the problems of denture stomatitis, peri-implant inflammation, and oral infection caused by the long-term use of these dental restoration materials. However, AgNPs can be absorbed into the blood circulatory system through the nasal/oral mucosa, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and other pathways and then distributed into the lungs, kidneys, liver, spleen, and testes, thereby causing toxic injury to these tissues and organs.

Artificial joint revision surgery, as an increasingly common surgery in orthopedics, often requires patient-specific prostheses to repair the bone defect. Porous tantalum is a good candidate due to its excellent abrasion and corrosion resistance and good osteointegration. Combination of 3D printing technology and numerical simulation is a promising strategy to design and prepare patient-specific porous prostheses.

July 2023

National Clinical Research Center of Kidney Diseases, Jinling Hospital, Nanjing University School of Medicine, Nanjing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied 1886 patients with lupus nephritis using whole-exome sequencing to identify rare genetic variants linked to the disease.
  • The study found 63 variants in 39 pathogenic genes, confirming a Mendelian form of lupus nephritis in 71 patients; this represents a detection yield of 4%.
  • Many of the identified gene variants are newly associated with lupus nephritis and share overlaps with other immunological disorders, indicating distinct inflammatory signatures and lower overall survival rates among affected patients.
