Previously obtained results indicate that faces are / preattentively/ detected in the visual scene , and information on facial expression is rapidly extracted at the lower levels of the visual system. At the same time different facial attributes make different contributions in facial expression recognition. However, it is known, among the preattentive mechanisms there are none that would be selective for certain facial features, such as eyes or mouth.

In recent decades, metal-containing nanocomposites have attracted considerable attention from researchers. In this work, for the first time, a detailed analysis of the preparation of reactive indicator papers (RIPs) based on silver-containing nanocomposites derived from silver fumarate was carried out. Thermolysis products are silver-containing nanocomposites containing silver nanoparticles uniformly distributed in a stabilizing carbon matrix.

During embryonic development, structures with complex geometry can emerge from planar epithelial monolayers; studying these shape transitions is of key importance for revealing the biophysical laws involved in the morphogenesis of biological systems. Here, using the example of normal proliferative monkey kidney (COS) cell monolayers, we investigate global and local topological characteristics of this model system in dependence on its shape. The obtained distributions of cells by their valence demonstrate a difference between the spherical and planar monolayers.

The vast majority of commercial sunflower hybrids worldwide are produced using cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) of the PET1 type, resulting from the interspecific hybridization of Helianthus petiolaris with Helianthus annuus. Due to the fact that CMS-PET1 was not previously detected in wild sunflower, it was believed that this cytotype could arise during interspecific hybridization and is specific solely for cultivated sunflower. In this study, the open reading frame, orfH522, associated with the CMS-PET1 phenotype, was revealed for the first time in the 3'-flanking region of the mitochondrial atpA gene in wild H.

Spin crossover (SCO) complexes can reversibly switch between low spin (LS) and high spin (HS) states, affording possible applications in sensing, displays, and molecular electronics. Dinuclear SCO complexes with access to [LS-LS], [LS-HS], and [HS-HS] states may offer increased levels of functionality. The nature of the SCO interconversion in dinuclear complexes is influenced by the local electronic environment.

In this article, the impact of an anthropogenically transformed environment on the content of pharmaceutically valuable biologically active compounds in medicinal plants is analyzed. The studied biologically active substances included phenolic compounds (flavonoids, anthocyanins, tannins, and phenolic acids). The number of transmissible forms of heavy metals (HMs), including cadmium, lead, and mercury, were discharged from factories that are present in the soil.

Deficits in the mineral Zn are responsible for a sizable proportion of the world's disease burden and child mortality. With the increasing success rate of biofortification in major crops, the development of a genotype with enhanced Zn bioavailability will be an efficient and sustainable solution to nutrient deficiency-related problems. Due to the complex chemistry of the human system, the absorption of Zn from cereals is lower.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks offer a wide range of applications in an overload situation, broadcasting and advertising, public safety, disaster management, etc. Providing robust communication services to mobile users (MUs) is a challenging task because of the dynamic characteristics of MUs. Resource allocation, including subchannels, transmit power, and serving users, is a critical transmission problem; further, it is also crucial to improve the coverage and energy efficacy of UAV-assisted transmission networks.

The comparison of odor functional maps in rodents demonstrates a high degree of inter-individual variability in glomerular activity patterns. There are substantial methodological difficulties in the interindividual assessment of local permutations in the glomerular patterns, since the position of anatomical extracranial landmarks, as well as the size, shape and angular orientation of olfactory bulbs can vary significantly. A new method for defining anatomical coordinates of active glomeruli in the rat olfactory bulb has been developed.

p53 expression and acetylation are crucial for the survival and death of neurons in penumbra. At the same time, the outcome of ischemia for penumbra cells depends largely on the histone acetylation status, but the effect of histone acetyltransferases and deacetylases on non-histone proteins like p53 is largely understudied. With combined in silico and in vitro approach, we have identified enzymes capable of acetylation/deacetylation, distribution, stability, and pro-apoptotic activity of p53 in ischemic penumbra in the course of post-stroke recovery, and also detected involved loci of acetylation in p53.

The most in-demand instrumental methods for new functional nanomaterial diagnostics employ synchrotron radiation, which is used to determine a material's electronic and local atomic structure. The high time and resource costs of researching at international synchrotron radiation centers and the problems involved in developing an optimal strategy and in planning the control of the experiments are acute. One possible approach to solving these problems involves the use of deep reinforcement learning agents.

Unlike in other viruses, in Cypoviruses the genome is doubly protected since their icosahedral capsids are embedded into a perfect polyhedrin crystal. Current experimental methods cannot resolve the resulting interface structure and we propose a symmetry-based approach to predict it. We reveal a remarkable match between the surfaces of Cypovirus and the outer polyhedrin matrix.

We reveal a novel phenomenon observed after self-catalytic growth of GaAs nanowires (NWs) on Si(111) substrates treated with a Ga focused ion beam (FIB). Depending on the ion dose, NW arrays with various geometrical parameters can be obtained. A minor treatment of the substrate enables a slight increase in the surface density of NWs relative to an unmodified substrate area.

In this feature article, an overview of the chemistry of pyramidanes, as a novel class of main group element clusters, is given. A general introduction sets the scene, briefly presenting the non-classical pyramidal geometry of tetracoordinate carbon, as opposed to the classical tetrahedral configuration. Pyramidanes, as the simplest organic compounds possessing a pyramidal carbon atom, are then discussed from both computational and experimental viewpoints, to show the theoretical predictions on the stability and thus the feasibility of pyramidanes has finally culminated in the isolation of the first stable representatives of the pyramidane family featuring heavy main group elements at the apex of the square pyramid.

A panel of 106 insertion/deletion (InDel) polymorphisms and a method of their genotyping on biochips were proposed as a new approach to genetic personal identification. Short lengths and low mutation rates are basic properties of InDel markers, which thus have significant advantages over short tandem repeats (STRs) widely used in forensics. The allele frequency distributions of all known InDel polymorphisms were studied in the five largest world populations (European, East Asian, South Asian, African, and American).
