Photothermal therapy (PTT) has garnered significant attention in recent years, but the standalone application of PTT still faces limitations that hinder its ability to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes. Nitric oxide (NO), being one of the most extensively studied gaseous molecules, presents itself as a promising complementary candidate for PTT. In response, various nanosystems have been developed to enable the simultaneous utilization of PTT and NO-mediated gas therapy (GT), with the integration of photothermal agents (PTAs) and thermally-sensitive NO donors being the prevailing approach.

DNA damage-mediated FTO downregulation promotes CRPC progression by inhibiting FOXO3a via an mA-dependent mechanism.

iScience

August 2024

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Viral Oncology, The Clinical Innovation & Research Center (CIRC), Shenzhen Hospital, Southern Medical University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • PARP inhibitors are a new type of medicine that show promise for treating a difficult form of prostate cancer called castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).
  • We found that a special molecule called N6-methyladenosine (mA) and a protein called FTO are linked to how cancer grows and responds to treatments.
  • By boosting FTO levels, we can make PARP inhibitors work better, which suggests new ways to treat this type of cancer.

  • GATA1-related cytopenia (GRC) can result in low blood platelet counts and anemia; hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potential cure.
  • A 6-year-old boy with severe anemia due to a novel GATA1 variant underwent preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to ensure any future baby would be healthy and HLA-compatible.
  • The successful transfer of a mosaic embryo resulted in the birth of a healthy baby, demonstrating that NGS-based PGT is an effective approach for managing GRC and related disorders.

Am J Transl Res

May 2024

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Proteomics, State Key Laboratory of Organ Failure Research, Department of Pathophysiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Southern Medical University Guangzhou 510515, Guangdong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how macrophages react at the gene level during inflammation triggered by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) using RNA sequencing.
  • Researchers identified 2,512 differentially expressed genes, with notable early inflammatory responses occurring at 1 and 3 hours after LPS treatment, revealing important patterns over time.
  • Key findings included a set of 78 consistently affected genes and highlighted the role of ribosomes in managing the inflammatory response, which could guide future research on inflammation mechanisms.

Background: COVID-19 has caused severe morbidity and mortality worldwide. After the end of the dynamic zero-COVID policy in China in December, 2022, concerns regarding reinfection were raised while little was known due to the lack of surveillance data in this country.

Aims: This study reviews the probability, risk factors, and severity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 Omicron variant reinfection, as well as the interval between infections, risk of onward transmission by reinfected cases, and the role of booster vaccination against reinfection.

The Essential Role of Proteoglycans and Glycosaminoglycans in Odontogenesis.

J Dent Res

April 2024

Center of Oral Implantology, Stomatological Hospital, School of Stomatology, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Tooth development and regeneration are regulated through a complex signaling network. Previous studies have focused on the exploration of intracellular signaling regulatory networks, but the regulatory roles of extracellular networks have only been revealed recently. Proteoglycans, which are essential components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and pivotal signaling molecules, are extensively involved in the process of odontogenesis.

The RECO is a novel endovascular treatment (EVT) device that adjusts the distance between two mesh segments to axially hold the thrombus. We organized this postmarket study to assess the safety and performance of RECO in acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO). This was a single-arm prospective multicentre study that enrolled patients as first-line patients treated with RECO at 9 stroke centres.

  • Gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland type (GA-FG) is a rare type of tumor that has not yet reached a consensus on classification and characteristics.* -
  • Based on studies from 2007 to 2021, 327 cases of GA-FG have been documented, showing specific features during endoscopic examinations, mainly presenting as small, solitary lesions in the upper stomach with certain patterns.* -
  • Although generally benign, GA-FG can invade submucosal layers and is typically treated effectively with endoscopic techniques like endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).*

The clinical application of cancer immunotherapy is unsatisfied due to low response rates and systemic immune-related adverse events. Microwave hyperthermia can be used as a synergistic immunotherapy to amplify the antitumor effect. Herein, we designed a Gd-based metal-organic framework (Gd-MOF) nanosystem for MRI-guided thermotherapy and synergistic immunotherapy, which featured high performance in drug loading and tumor tissue penetration.

Favorable response of a patient with primary B/myeloid mixed phenotype acute Leukemia to CD19-CAR-T: Case report and literature review.

Medicine (Baltimore)

December 2023

Department of Hematology and Oncology, Shenzhen University General Hospital, International Cancer Center, Shenzhen Key Laboratory, Hematology Institution of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen University Health Science Center, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, China.

Rationale: Mixed phenotype acute leukemia (MPAL) is a rare and heterogeneous type of leukemia known for its poor prognosis. The optimal treatment strategy for this condition currently lacks consensus, leaving uncertainty in its management. Nonetheless, a potential therapeutic option for patients with refractory MPAL who express target antigens is donor-derived chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy.
