Article Synopsis
  • After RFA treatment for liver cancer, there's a notable increase in the expression of /xCT and the number of dendritic cells (DCs) in the tumor microenvironment (TME).
  • /xCT is associated with poor prognosis in liver cancer and is primarily found in DCs within the TME.
  • Combining xCT targeting in DCs with RFA treatment boosts anti-tumor immune responses, reduces tumor growth, and suggests a potential strategy for better treatment outcomes in liver cancer.

Infected burn wounds are characterized by persistent drug-resistant bacterial infection coupled with an inflammatory response, impeding the wound-healing process. In this study, an intelligent nanoparticle system (CCM+TTD@ZIF-8 NPs) was prepared using curcumin (CCM), an aggregation-induced emission luminogens (TTD), and ZIF-8 for infection-induced wound healing. The CCM+TTD@ZIF-8 NPs showed multiple functions, including bacteria targeting, fluorescence imaging and pH response-guided photodynamic therapy (PDT), and anti-inflammatory.

Introduction: The efficacy of radiotherapy in colorectal cancer (CRC) is often limited by radiation resistance. Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) is well known for its role in repairing double-strand DNA breaks within the DNA damage response (DDR) pathway. However, whether ATM mediates other mechanisms contributing to radiation resistance remains insufficiently investigated.

Ovarian cancer (OV) ranks among the deadliest gynecological cancer, known for its high risk of relapse and metastasis, and a general resistance to conventional platinum-based chemotherapy. Selenoprotein I (SELENOI) is a crucial mediator implicated in human hereditary spastic paraplegia. However, its role in human tumors remains poorly elucidated.

Tumor immunotherapy has significantly transformed the field of oncology over the past decade. An optimal tumor immunotherapy would ideally elicit robust innate and adaptive immune responses within tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). Unfortunately, immune system experiences functional decline with chronological age, a process termed "immunosenescence," which contributes to impaired immune responses against pathogens, suboptimal vaccination outcomes, and heightened vulnerability to various diseases, including cancer.

Cardiomyopathy is a group of disease characterized by structural and functional damage to the myocardium. The etiologies of cardiomyopathies are diverse, spanning from genetic mutations impacting fundamental myocardial functions to systemic disorders that result in widespread cardiac damage. Many specific gene mutations cause primary cardiomyopathy.

Article Synopsis
  • Polymer electrolytes are being developed for lithium metal batteries but face challenges due to low ionic conductivity and unstable interfaces at high voltages and capacities.
  • A new molecular brush polymer electrolyte, BC--P(CCMA--TFEMA), aims to enhance ionic conductivity and stabilize interfaces by using specific chemical groups that improve lithium ion transport and interface stability.
  • Testing shows significant performance, with an 83% capacity retention after 1000 cycles and a solid-state cell achieving 204 mA h g over 400 cycles at high voltages, suggesting a promising future for these advanced electrolytes.

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1) is critically involved in maintaining episomes during latent infection and promoting tumorigenesis. The development of an epitope-specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) for EBNA1 holds great promise due to its high affinity and specificity, offering a new and innovative approach for the treatment of EBV-related diseases. In this proof-of-concept study, we employed a structure-based design strategy to create three unique immunogens specifically targeting the DNA binding state of the EBNA1 DBD.

  • This study examined the impact of valvular heart disease (VHD)-related heart failure (HF) in G20 countries over nearly three decades, from 1990 to 2019.
  • The findings showed a rising trend in VHD-related HF prevalence, with notable differences between nonrheumatic and rheumatic VHD cases across various countries, influenced by age and sociodemographic factors.
  • The results emphasize the urgent need for public health strategies to address the increasing burden of VHD-related HF, particularly among older populations.

Article Synopsis
  • Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is linked to low back pain and worsened by chronic inflammation, particularly involving the tumor necrosis factor alpha (Tnf-α) and its receptors.
  • Researchers studied the effects of knocking out Tnfr1 and Tnfr2 in mice to understand their role in IVDD, analyzing various disc-related characteristics as the mice aged and underwent lumbar spine instability.
  • The results showed that by 21 months, Tnfr knockout mice displayed improved disc structure and function, with enhanced extracellular matrix (ECM) health and reduced signs of degeneration compared to control mice, suggesting that Tnfr signaling contributes to IVDD progression.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a form of thermal ablation, employs localized heat to induce protein denaturation in tissue cells, resulting in cell death. It has emerged as a viable treatment option for patients who are ineligible for surgery in various diseases, particularly liver cancer and other tumor-related conditions. In addition to directly eliminating tumor cells, RFA also induces alterations in the infiltrating cells within the tumor microenvironment (TME), which can significantly impact treatment outcomes.

TRIM72 (MG53), a membrane repair protein with E3-ligase activity, plays a crucial role in colorectal cancer (CRC). This study examined TRIM72 expression in primary CRC tumors and paired liver metastases using RT-PCR. Findings revealed significantly lower TRIM72 levels in liver metastases compared to primary tumors (p < 0.

Background: Heart failure (HF) and coronary heart disease (CHD) are major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While traditional risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and smoking have been extensively studied, the role of metabolite functions in the development of these cardiovascular conditions has been less explored. This study employed a Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to investigate the impact of metabolite functions on HF and CHD.

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicine Pharmaceutics, Guangdong Provincial Engineering Laboratory of Chinese Medicine Preparation Technology, School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Southern Medical University Guangzhou 510515, China.

Based on the differences in targeted energy metabolomics, intestinal barrier protein expression, and glucose transport, the synergistic mechanism of Coptidis Rhizoma(CR) processed with Euodiae Fructus(ECR) on ulcerative colitis(UC) was explored.Mice were administered 4% dextran sulfate sodium to induce UC model, and then randomly divided into a model group, a CR group, and an ECR group. After 14 days of treatment, the therapeutic effect of processing on UC was assessed through histopathology of colon tissue and inflammatory indexes.

Neoadjuvant targeted therapy combining targeted agents with chemotherapy significantly improve survival rates of patients suffering from human epidermal receptor (HER2)-positive breast cancer (BC) in early or locally advanced stages. However, approximately 50% of patients fail to achieve a pathological complete response. In response, targeted photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) have emerged as effective strategies to bolster primary tumors treatment.
