Background: Lack of motivation and behavioral abnormalities are the hallmarks of postpartum depression (PPD). Severe uterine contractions during labor are pain triggers for psychiatric disorders, including PPD in women during the puerperium. Creating biomarkers to monitor PPD may help in its early detection and treatment.

Long noncoding RNA DHRS4 antisense RNA 1 suppresses osteosarcoma cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis through a competitive endogenous RNA mechanism.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Spinal Surgery, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University, 253 Industrial Avenue Central Guangzhou, Guangdong510280, Guangzhou, Guangdong510280, China.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumor. Recent evidence suggests that the novel long noncoding RNA DHRS4 antisense RNA 1 (DHRS4-AS1) serves an important role in cancer progression and metastasis. However, its function and molecular mechanism in OS remain largely unknown.

Malnutrition substantially contributes to adverse clinical outcomes. However, no national survey has been conducted to characterize its epidemiology in hospital settings in China. We conducted the China Nutrition Fundamental Data 2020 project among a multistage stratified cluster sample of adult inpatients from 291 study sites across 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (except for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Province, and the Xizang Autonomous Region, please see MATERIALS AND METHODS for details of the causes) of China to generate reliable data on the prevalence of malnutrition and explore the associated risk factors.

Objectives: COVID-19, a public health emergency affecting the world in 2019, not only greatly promoted the development and application of vaccines but also effectively shortened the publishing time of scientific papers. In view of these facts, the current situation, status, problems and development trends of vaccine research and application were explored through bibliometric analysis of highly cited papers in the vaccine field within the time frame of 2014-2024, and the countries, institutions, authors, funding agencies and other relevant information that contributed most to vaccine research and application were summarised.

Design: Bibliometric analysis through data analysis and visual mapping.

Effect of empagliflozin on plasma lipids and lipoproteins in type 2 diabetes and heart failure - Empire HF and SIMPLE.

J Clin Lipidol

December 2024

Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet, Centre of Diagnostic Investigation, Copenhagen, Denmark; Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Electronic address:

Objective: Beyond glucose-lowering, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have cardioprotective effects with unclear mechanisms. We examined changes in an extensive panel of plasma lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins and whether these changes were independent of weight loss, hemoglobin A1c, and hematocrit in patients treated with empagliflozin versus placebo to better understand the observed cardioprotective effects.

Methods: Post-hoc analyses of two double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, the Empire HF trial including 190 patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction and the SIMPLE trial including 90 patients with type 2 diabetes randomized to, respectively, 10 mg and 25 mg empagliflozin daily or placebo for 12 weeks.

January 2025

Department of Endocrinology, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510080, China.. Electronic address:

This study comprehensively explores the relationship between the structure of carboxymethyl-pachymaran (CMP) and its diverse biological activities, including immunomodulation, anti-inflammatory effects, tumor cell proliferation inhibition, and antioxidant activity. By adjusting preparation parameters, highly purified CMP samples with varying degrees of substitution (DS) and molecular weights (Mw) were successfully obtained. The results indicate that CMP, composed primarily of β-D-glucan, exhibits different levels of activity depending on its structural characteristics.

The clinical effectiveness of colistin against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogen infections has been threatened by the emergence of the plasmid-mediated colistin-resistant gene mcr-1. This development underscores the urgent need for innovative therapeutic strategies that target resistance mechanisms. In this study, we demonstrated that glabridin can restore the sensitivity of colistin to mcr-1-positive Escherichia coli (E.

When multiple instance learning meets foundation models: Advancing histological whole slide image analysis.

Med Image Anal

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China; Medical Research Institute, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China; Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence in Medical Image Analysis and Application, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Deep multiple instance learning (MIL) pipelines are the mainstream weakly supervised learning methodologies for whole slide image (WSI) classification. However, it remains unclear how these widely used approaches compare to each other, given the recent proliferation of foundation models (FMs) for patch-level embedding and the diversity of slide-level aggregations. This paper implemented and systematically compared six FMs and six recent MIL methods by organizing different feature extractions and aggregations across seven clinically relevant end-to-end prediction tasks using WSIs from 4044 patients with four different cancer types.

BRAF mutations drive initiation and progression of various tumors. While BRAF inhibitors are effective in BRAF-mutant melanoma patients, intrinsic or acquired resistance to these therapies is common. Here, we identify non-receptor-type protein tyrosine phosphatase 23 (PTPN23) as an alternative effective target in BRAF-mutant cancer cells.

In most solid tumors, cellular energy metabolism is primarily dominated by aerobic glycolysis, which fulfills the high demand for biomacromolecules at the expense of reduced ATP production efficiency. Elucidation of the mechanisms by which rapidly proliferating malignant cells acquire sufficient energy in this state of inefficient ATP production from glycolysis could enable development of metabolism targeted therapeutic strategies. In this study, we observed a significant association between elevated expression levels of the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) SNHG17 and unfavorable prognosis in breast cancer (BCa).
