Women faculty members' challenges when pursuing leadership positions in academic dentistry: A survey.

Purpose/objectives: This study addresses persistent gender disparities in leadership roles in academic dentistry. The objectives were to identify the challenges and barriers to leadership that women face in general and during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to describe resources they need to reach their leadership potential.

Methods: The American Dental Education Association Section on Women in Leadership (WIL), gathered survey data concerning leadership challenges and faculty development needs.

Oral complications associated with trigeminal trophic syndrome: A case report.

Introduction: Destruction of the trigeminal (Gasserian) ganglion or peripheral damage to the trigeminal nerve may lead to trigeminal trophic syndrome (TTS), a rare condition characterized by self-inflicted trauma. To date, under 200 cases of TTS are documented in medical literature, with only sparse studies reporting on oral complications secondary to this condition.

Case Report: The following report presents a well-documented case of oral complications associated with TTS in an 83-year-old Caucasian female presenting with right-sided lesions on her nasal ala, scalp, buccal mucosa, and tongue, secondary to self-inflicted injury following their second microvascular decompression for surgical management of trigeminal neuralgia.

Purpose/objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an Electronic-Periodontal-Diagnosis-Tool (EPDT) to facilitate the formulation of a correct periodontal diagnosis and analyze students' perceptions of the use of the EPDT.

Methods: Fifty Year-3 students who recently started their clinical training, were randomly assigned to two groups. Two clinical scenarios involving challenging periodontal diagnoses, each one with unique components, variables, and categories were distributed with specific instructions.

Endodontic Management of Three-Rooted Mandibular Second Molar with Three Separate Orifices and Three Independent Portals of Exit: A Case Report.

Most mandibular second molars are usually found to have either one or two roots. However, mandibular second molars can also present with variations in the number of roots as well as differences in the morphology of their root canals. An 18-year-old male presented to the Department of Graduate Endodontics clinic with a morphologically variable mandibular second molar with three roots-two mesial and one distal.

Objectives: The rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and the ensuing rise of the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted healthcare unprecedentedly. With the scarcity of available resources, including healthcare providers themselves, novel methods for tracking aerosol and splatter in real time are required to alleviate demand and increase safety. This study evaluates the utility of riboflavin (vitamin B ) as a tracer for splatter/aerosol distribution from ultrasonic scaling in an open operatory clinic.

A literature review of local and systemic considerations for endodontic treatments in older adults.

Objectives: The aim of this literature review was to summarise the clinical important findings on the endodontic treatment outcome in older patients (≥60 years old) with pulpal/periapical disease considering local and systemic factors from a body of knowledge that is heterogeneous in methods or disciplines.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the delivery of healthcare, including oral healthcare services. The restrictions imposed for mitigating spread of the virus forced dental practitioners to adopt significant changes in their workflow pattern. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the pandemic on the practice of oral and maxillofacial pathology in two countries in regard to educational activities, and clinical and diagnostic pathology services.

Pain Relief with Combination Acetaminophen/Codeine or Ibuprofen following Third-Molar Extraction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Objective: The purpose of our study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled studies that, following third-molar extraction, utilized either a combination of acetaminophen (600 mg) with codeine (60 mg) or ibuprofen (400 mg) for pain management.

Design: We searched PubMed, and the trial registry ClinicalTrials.gov databases with the keywords "molar or molars," "tooth or teeth," "extraction," and "pain.

Nicotine-related misperceptions among faculty and students at a Midwestern dental school.

Purpose/objectives: To determine the perceptions about the ill-effects of nicotine in students and faculty at a Midwestern dental school. This information will help inform the school and improve teaching on this subject during a time when electronic nicotine delivery systems are increasingly popular.

Methods: An online survey of dental students and faculty of a Midwestern dental school was deployed in November, 2020 to determine their level of misperception about the ill effects of nicotine.

Pigmented lateral periodontal cyst: A case report and review of pigmented odontogenic cysts.

Pigmented odontogenic cysts are uncommon and to date, only 37 cases have been reported in the English literature. Here, we report a case of a pigmented lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) in the maxilla of a 48-year-old female. The patient presented with clinical swelling in the maxillary anterior region.

The periodontal senior case clinical challenge: Students' opinions of a formative virtual assessment during the COVID-19 emergency.

Introduction: Due to COVID-19, innovative, virtual educational methods are being developed to provide students with learning experiences comparable to established clinical practices. Our objective was to produce the Periodontal Senior Case Clinical Challenge (PSCCC) that would provide fourth-year students an alternative for senior case presentations and would be a formative assessment for which student opinions would be provided and analysed. The PSCCC would utilise an online, case-based, written, clinical assessment and follow-up, structured discussion to challenge students to demonstrate ability to apply didactic periodontal knowledge to patient-based experiences.

The effect of overexpression of Lrp5 on orthodontic tooth movement.

Objective: To analyse the effect of gain-of-function mutations in the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (Lrp5) on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM).

Setting And Sample Population: A split-mouth study design was utilized. Thirty-two male Lrp5-high bone mass (HBM) knock-in mice including A214V and G171V mutants (n = 16/group) and sixteen C57BL/6 wild-type (WT) mice were included in the study.

Objective: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a unique fibrocartilaginous joint that adapts to mechanical loading through cell signaling pathways such as the Wnt pathway. Increased expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (Lrp5), a co-receptor of the Wnt pathway, is associated with a high bone mass (HBM) phenotype. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of overexpression of Lrp5 on the subchondral bone and cartilage of the TMJ in mice exhibiting the HBM phenotype.
