Introduction: Destruction of the trigeminal (Gasserian) ganglion or peripheral damage to the trigeminal nerve may lead to trigeminal trophic syndrome (TTS), a rare condition characterized by self-inflicted trauma. To date, under 200 cases of TTS are documented in medical literature, with only sparse studies reporting on oral complications secondary to this condition.
Case Report: The following report presents a well-documented case of oral complications associated with TTS in an 83-year-old Caucasian female presenting with right-sided lesions on her nasal ala, scalp, buccal mucosa, and tongue, secondary to self-inflicted injury following their second microvascular decompression for surgical management of trigeminal neuralgia.

Acquiring sufficient blood for hormone analysis in mice can be a limiting step. Hormone analysis techniques using non-invasive sample collection have been vigorously developed for endangered species, from whom blood sampling is prohibited, or from species that are otherwise difficult to handle in a laboratory setting. Because there are interactions between glucocorticoids and thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), reducing the animal's "distress" during sample collection is imperative.

Introduction: The characterization of circulating tumor cells (CTC) and circulating tumor microemboli (CTM) has emerged as both a challenge to the standard view of metastasis, and as a valuable means for understanding genotypic and phenotypic variability shown even within the same cancer type. However, in the case of salivary gland neoplasms, limited data are available for the role that CTCs and CTMs play in metastasis and secondary tumor formation.ru.

Purpose/objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an Electronic-Periodontal-Diagnosis-Tool (EPDT) to facilitate the formulation of a correct periodontal diagnosis and analyze students' perceptions of the use of the EPDT.
Methods: Fifty Year-3 students who recently started their clinical training, were randomly assigned to two groups. Two clinical scenarios involving challenging periodontal diagnoses, each one with unique components, variables, and categories were distributed with specific instructions.

Most mandibular second molars are usually found to have either one or two roots. However, mandibular second molars can also present with variations in the number of roots as well as differences in the morphology of their root canals. An 18-year-old male presented to the Department of Graduate Endodontics clinic with a morphologically variable mandibular second molar with three roots-two mesial and one distal.

Objectives: The rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and the ensuing rise of the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted healthcare unprecedentedly. With the scarcity of available resources, including healthcare providers themselves, novel methods for tracking aerosol and splatter in real time are required to alleviate demand and increase safety. This study evaluates the utility of riboflavin (vitamin B ) as a tracer for splatter/aerosol distribution from ultrasonic scaling in an open operatory clinic.

Objectives: The aim of this literature review was to summarise the clinical important findings on the endodontic treatment outcome in older patients (≥60 years old) with pulpal/periapical disease considering local and systemic factors from a body of knowledge that is heterogeneous in methods or disciplines.
Background: Due to the increasing number of older patients in the endodontic practice, and the current trend for tooth preservation, the need for clinicians to have a better understanding of age-related implications that may influence the required endodontic treatment in older adults to retain their natural dentition is indispensable.
Methods: PubMed/Medline and Embase was searched by a medical librarian using specific terms based on inclusion/exclusion criteria.

Oral manifestations may be the first sign of a systemic disease, or represent lesions associated with an established or recurrent disease. Oral health care providers are often the first to recognize these signs. Some lesions have characteristic features that allow for early detection and intervention.

For centuries, society has called out for transformations to lift all of its members. While it may seem ordinary in our time for women to be dentists or dental educators, the path was neither always easy, nor has true equity been achieved. The modern transformation of dental education and dentistry creates the need for leaders to propose and develop concrete initiatives to advance the profession and benefit society.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the delivery of healthcare, including oral healthcare services. The restrictions imposed for mitigating spread of the virus forced dental practitioners to adopt significant changes in their workflow pattern. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the pandemic on the practice of oral and maxillofacial pathology in two countries in regard to educational activities, and clinical and diagnostic pathology services.

Purpose/objectives: To determine the perceptions about the ill-effects of nicotine in students and faculty at a Midwestern dental school. This information will help inform the school and improve teaching on this subject during a time when electronic nicotine delivery systems are increasingly popular.
Methods: An online survey of dental students and faculty of a Midwestern dental school was deployed in November, 2020 to determine their level of misperception about the ill effects of nicotine.

Pigmented odontogenic cysts are uncommon and to date, only 37 cases have been reported in the English literature. Here, we report a case of a pigmented lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) in the maxilla of a 48-year-old female. The patient presented with clinical swelling in the maxillary anterior region.

Our aim was to evaluate the proinflammatory and cell proliferation effects of an activated-zinc mouth rinse (SM) that has been suggested as an alternative post-treatment therapeutic.
Materials And Methods: Tissue models of gingival epithelium were used to simulate periodontal disease and compare inflammatory reactions after treatment with CHX or SM.

The many diverse terms used to describe the wide spectrum of changes seen in proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) have resulted in disparate clinical management. The objective of this study was to produce an expert consensus guideline for standardized assessment and reporting by pathologists diagnosing PVL related lesions. 299 biopsies from 84 PVL patients from six institutions were selected from patients who had multifocal oral leukoplakic lesions identified over several years (a minimum follow-up period of 36 months).

Early establishment of soft-tissue adhesion and seal at the transmucosal and transcutaneous surface of implants is crucial to prevent infection and ensure the long-term stability and function of implants. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that treatment of titanium with ultraviolet (UV) light would enhance its interaction with epithelial cells. X-ray spectroscopy showed that UV treatment significantly reduced the atomic percentage of surface carbon on titanium from 46.

Our objective was to produce the Periodontal Senior Case Clinical Challenge (PSCCC) that would provide fourth-year students an alternative for senior case presentations and would be a formative assessment for which student opinions would be provided and analysed. The PSCCC would utilise an online, case-based, written, clinical assessment and follow-up, structured discussion to challenge students to demonstrate ability to apply didactic periodontal knowledge to patient-based experiences.

Objective: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a unique fibrocartilaginous joint that adapts to mechanical loading through cell signaling pathways such as the Wnt pathway. Increased expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (Lrp5), a co-receptor of the Wnt pathway, is associated with a high bone mass (HBM) phenotype. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of overexpression of Lrp5 on the subchondral bone and cartilage of the TMJ in mice exhibiting the HBM phenotype.

Microbial contributions to periodontal disease have been under renewed scrutiny with the advent of newer technologies to identify their presence and gene expression at the molecular level. Members of the phylum Synergistetes are some of the more recent bacteria to be associated with periodontal disease. Bacteria classified in this phylum can be found in a wide variety of habitats including both inside and outside of a mammalian host.
