Background And Purpose: Transitioning from the didactic to experiential setting is challenging for student pharmacists, perhaps due to lack of experiences providing "real-time" clinician interaction. We describe findings from a semester-long infectious diseases (ID) didactic elective that utilized a national cohort of preceptors and faculty across the United States to mimic clinician interaction and "real-time" ID management of various disease states. The mechanics of this elective provide a framework for others to implement to enhance advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) readiness.

Objectives: Recent molecular studies show that breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease, and several molecular changes may accumulate over time to influence treatment response. As a result, employing reliable molecular biomarkers to monitor these modifications may help deliver personalised treatment. However, this may be unrealistic in the resource-limited parts of the world.

Article Synopsis
  • Huperzine A, often added to pre-workout supplements, has shown potential for improving cognitive function in some populations, but its effects on exercise-trained individuals are not well researched.
  • A study involving 15 exercise-trained participants tested the impact of acute huperzine A ingestion on cognitive and exercise performance, revealing no significant differences in cognitive function or exercise performance between those who took huperzine A and those who received a placebo.
  • The results suggest that huperzine A does not enhance cognitive function during exercise, raising questions about its value in pre-workout supplements.

Neuropathic pain afflicts millions of individuals and represents a major health problem for which there is limited effective and safe therapy. Emerging literature links altered sphingolipid metabolism to nociceptive processing. However, the neuropharmacology of sphingolipid signaling in the central nervous system in the context of chronic pain remains largely unexplored and controversial.

Healthful dietary patterns have constituents that are known to improve exercise performance, such as antioxidants, nitrates, and alkalizing effects. However, ergogenic effects of such diets have not been evaluated. We hypothesized that a short-term Mediterranean diet results in better exercise performance, as compared to a typical Western diet.

Image-guided surgery can enhance cancer treatment by decreasing, and ideally eliminating, positive tumor margins and iatrogenic damage to healthy tissue. Current state-of-the-art near-infrared fluorescence imaging systems are bulky and costly, lack sensitivity under surgical illumination, and lack co-registration accuracy between multimodal images. As a result, an overwhelming majority of physicians still rely on their unaided eyes and palpation as the primary sensing modalities for distinguishing cancerous from healthy tissue.

Subtle lameness makes it difficult to ascertain which is the affected limb. A study was conducted to investigate a change in the thermal pattern and temperature of the thermal image of the paw print in a lame pelvic limb compared to a non-lame pelvic limb of dogs confirmed by orthostatic analysis. Fourteen client owned dogs with a unilateral pelvic limb lameness and 14 healthy employee dogs were examined and the pelvic limbs radiographed.

Background: Telemedicine is the use of technology to provide and support health care when distance separates the clinical service and the patient. Home-based telemedicine systems involve the use of such technology for medical support and care connecting the patient from the comfort of their homes with the clinician. In order for such a system to be used extensively, it is necessary to understand not only the issues faced by the patients in using them but also the clinician.

Nutritional quality of eggs from hens fed distillers dried grains with solubles.

Poult Sci

November 2016

Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, Tufts University, Medford, MA.

A feeding trial was conducted with laying hens where either 10% or 20% regular-fat distiller's dried grains with solubles (R-DDGS) or low-fat DDGS (L-DDGS) were incorporated into the feed. Production parameters and the effect of DDGS on egg nutritional quality, focusing on yolk lipids, were evaluated. Neither R-DDGS nor L-DDGS at up to 20% of laying hen feeds had a statistically significant impact on hen weight gain, egg production, feed intake, feed efficiency, egg mass, or egg weight.

An optimal control problem for cancer chemotherapy is considered that includes immunological activity. In the objective a weighted average of several quantities that describe the effectiveness of treatment is minimized. These terms include (i) the number of cancer cells at the terminal time, (ii) a measure for the immunocompetent cell densities at the terminal point (included as a negative term), (iii) the overall amount of cytotoxic agents given as a measure for the side effects of treatment and (iv) a small penalty on the terminal time that limits the overall therapy horizon which is assumed to be free.

The effects of physical activity on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms: the evidence.

Prev Med

June 2011

Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Campus Box 1126, Vadalabene Center, Edwardsville, IL 62026, USA.

Unlabelled: Evidence supports the beneficial effects of physical activity (PA) on cognitive performance and suggests that effects might be particularly large for children. However, limited research has explored PA as a means of managing behavioral symptoms and improving cognitive performance of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The etiology of ADHD and the putative mechanisms for the effects of PA on cognitive performance suggest that PA might be especially important for this population.
