Search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect via Charge-Dependent Azimuthal Correlations Relative to Spectator and Participant Planes in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes.

Research Engagement in a Virtual World: Strategies for Maintaining the Power and Impact of Photovoice Research Online.

When our photovoice research intersected with the COVID-19 pandemic, we were thrust into a new world of adapting the method in the virtual environment. Between both authors, we had over two decades of experience implementing photovoice. However, that involved tried and true methods of working face to face and side by side with people in community-based settings.

Background: Despite the positive impact of social and emotional learning (SEL) on the emotional well-being of children, literature on physical activity engagement and SEL among this population has been limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine whether school students' SEL would improve after participation in a before-school physical activity program.

Methods: A total of 138 fourth and sixth grade students from 1 elementary school and 1 middle school participated in this study.

Effect of a Brief Social Contact Video on Transphobia and Depression-Related Stigma Among Adolescents: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Transphobia and stigma remain barriers to seeking mental health care for gender-diverse adolescents.

Objective: To examine the utility of brief social contact-based video interventions of transgender protagonists with depression to reduce transphobia and depression-related stigma and increase treatment-seeking intentions among adolescents in the general population.

Design, Setting, And Participants: During August 2021, a total of 1437 participants were recruited and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 video-based conditions in a 2:2:1:1 ratio: (1) transgender adolescent girls, (2) transgender adolescent boys, (3) cisgender adolescent girls, or (4) cisgender adolescent boys.

Black Women Faculty and Administrators Navigating COVID-19, Social Unrest, and Academia: Challenges and Strategies.

Black women faculty and administrators in the United States are tackling a force of socioeconomic and racial disparities, emotional tolls and invisible burdens within academia, political turmoil, social unrest, and public health crises. COVID-19 has added an additional layer related to work responsibilities, the overall well-being of Black women faculty and administrators and the diverse students they encounter, and management of work and home responsibilities. This paper discusses perspectives and evidence-based strategies regarding Black women faculty and administrators who navigate academia and teach during times of COVID-19 and social unrest.

Professional nurses, by virtue of their training, pledge to care for individuals who are sick or infirm. This commitment is confirmed via the Nightingale Pledge, which focuses on public health and equity and deems the nurse to be a missioner of health. Health disparities exist in direct conflict with the nursing responsibility of caritas, or love.

Heart Rate Recovery, Central Systolic Pressure, and Augmentation Index in Young Healthy Individuals.

Purpose: Measuring heart rate recovery (HRR) holds valuable cardiovascular information and requires minimal technical skill and cost. Understanding the associations between HRR and more robust cardiovascular indicators, such as central systolic blood pressure (CSBP), can provide valuable cardiovascular information with less involvement. CSBP is a strong predictor of certain cardiovascular diseases.

The Linkage Between Bone Densitometry and Cardiovascular Disease.

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has been traditionally used to assess body composition covering bone, fat and muscle content. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has deleterious effects on bone health and fat composition. Therefore, early detection of bone health, fat and muscle composition would help to anticipate a proper diagnosis and treatment plan for CVD patients.

ALLD: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Detector.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a life-threatening type of cancer wherein mortality rate is unquestionably high. Early detection of ALL can reduce both the rate of fatality as well as improve the diagnosis plan for patients. In this study, we developed the ALL Detector (ALLD), which is a deep learning-based network to distinguish ALL patients from healthy individuals based on blast cell microscopic images.

Understanding Reentrance in Frustrated Magnets: The Case of the Er_{2}Sn_{2}O_{7} Pyrochlore.

Reentrance, the return of a system from an ordered phase to a previously encountered less-ordered one as a controlled parameter is continuously varied, is a recurring theme found in disparate physical systems, yet its microscopic cause is often not investigated thoroughly. Here, through detailed characterization and theoretical modeling, we uncover the microscopic mechanism behind reentrance in the strongly frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er_{2}Sn_{2}O_{7}. We use single crystal heat capacity measurements to expose that Er_{2}Sn_{2}O_{7} exhibits multiple instances of reentrance in its magnetic field B vs temperature T phase diagram for magnetic fields along three cubic high symmetry directions.

Road salt is more toxic to wood frog embryos from polluted ponds.

Organisms that rely on aquatic habitats in roaded landscapes face a growing array of consequences from pollution, especially due to freshwater salinization. Critically, these consequences can vary from population to population depending on exposure histories and evolutionary responses. Prior studies using transplant and common garden experiments have found that aquatic-stage wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) from roadside populations are less fit in the wild and more sensitive to road salt than their counterparts from woodland populations away from roads.

You are more than what you eat: potentially adaptive enrichment of microbiome functions across bat dietary niches.

Background: Animals evolved in a microbial world, and their gut microbial symbionts have played a role in their ecological diversification. While many recent studies report patterns of phylosymbiosis between hosts and their gut bacteria, fewer studies examine the potentially adaptive functional contributions of these microbes to the dietary habits of their hosts. In this study, we examined predicted metabolic pathways in the gut bacteria of more than 500 individual bats belonging to 60 species and compare the enrichment of these functions across hosts with distinct dietary ecologies.

Reconstruction and analysis of the DAN5/P1 and BSN12/P1 Gona Early Pleistocene Homo fossils.

Two Early Pleistocene fossils from Gona, Ethiopia, were originally assigned to Homo erectus, and their differences in size and robusticity were attributed to either sexual dimorphism or anagenetic evolution. In the current study, we both revisit the taxonomic affinities of these fossils and assess whether morphological differences between them reflect temporal evolution or sexual variation. Seasonal variation in the bioaccumulation of potentially toxic metals in the tissues of Astrangia poculata in the northeastern United States.

Astrangia poculata inhabits coasts near dense human populations in the northeastern United States and may be exposed to elevated pollutants. No studies have assessed heavy metal concentration in temperate corals despite their proximity to anthropogenic activity. We collected colonies four times in one year and analyzed coral tissue for As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Zn.

Body and canine size dimorphism in fossils inform sociobehavioral hypotheses on human evolution and have been of interest since Darwin's famous reflections on the subject. Here, we assemble a large dataset of fossil canines of the human clade, including all available fossils recovered from the Middle Awash and Gona research areas in Ethiopia, and systematically examine canine dimorphism through evolutionary time. In particular, we apply a Bayesian probabilistic method that reduces bias when estimating weak and moderate levels of dimorphism.

Objectives: The aim was to describe the impact of the opioid epidemic on pain management practices in pediatric sickle cell disease (SCD) and propose a conceptual framework for navigating ethical decision-making in pediatric sickle cell pain management.

Methods: A review of the literature on ethical challenges in the management of sickle cell pain was conducted and considered in the context of the opioid epidemic and psychosocial factors affecting youth with SCD. The Integrated Ethical Framework for Pain Management (IEFPM) was applied to pediatric sickle cell pain management using a clinical case example.

Across the planet, winter de-icing practices have caused secondary salinization of freshwater habitats. Many amphibians are vulnerable because of permeable skin and reliance on small ponds, where salinity can be high. Early developmental stages of amphibians are especially sensitive to salt, and larvae developing in salt-polluted environments must osmoregulate through ion exchange in gills.

Estimating sexual size dimorphism in fossil species from posterior probability densities.

Accurate characterization of sexual dimorphism is crucial in evolutionary biology because of its significance in understanding present and past adaptations involving reproductive and resource use strategies of species. However, inferring dimorphism in fossil assemblages is difficult, particularly with relatively low dimorphism. Commonly used methods of estimating dimorphism levels in fossils include the mean method, the binomial dimorphism index, and the coefficient of variation method.

On the Calculation of Time Alignment Errors in Data Management Platforms for Distribution Grid Data.

The operation and planning of distribution grids require the joint processing of measurements from different grid locations. Since measurement devices in low- and medium-voltage grids lack precise clock synchronization, it is important for data management platforms of distribution system operators to be able to account for the impact of nonideal clocks on measurement data. This paper formally introduces a metric termed Additive Alignment Error to capture the impact of misaligned averaging intervals of electrical measurements.

Ejaculate Allocation and Sperm Characteristics Differ among Alternative Male Types in a Species of Fish with Cooperation and Competition among Unrelated Males.

Sexual selection arising from sperm competition has driven the evolution of immense variation in ejaculate allocation and sperm characteristics not only among species, but also among males within a species. One question that has received little attention is how cooperation among males affects these patterns. Here we ask how male alternative reproductive types differ in testes size, ejaculate production, and sperm morphology in the ocellated wrasse, a marine fish in which unrelated males cooperate and compete during reproduction.

Despite national directives to increase influenza vaccination compliance, college campuses remain woefully below national goals. This study aimed to identify factors correlated with the decision to voluntarily receive an influenza vaccine.
