Efficacy of Higher-Voltage Long-Duration Pulsed Radiofrequency for Spinal Zoster-Associated Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Pain Physician

December 2024

Department of Pain Management, West China Hospital/West China Tianfu Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the safety and effectiveness of a higher-voltage long-duration pulsed radiofrequency (HL-PRF) treatment for managing zoster-associated pain (ZAP) compared to standard treatment.
  • Patients in Group A received gradually increased voltage up to 100 V, while Group B maintained a steady 65 V throughout.
  • Results focused on pain levels, emotional well-being, and quality of life over 12 weeks, with an aim to address high recurrence rates associated with the existing methods.

Effect of Remote Ischemic Conditioning on Organ Transplantation: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Transplant Proc

August 2024

Department of Surgery of Stomach and Small Intestine, Yunnan Cancer Hospital, Kunming, Yunnan, China. Electronic address:

Background: Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) has shown great advantages in protecting organs from ischemia-reperfusion loss and applied research on RIC continues to increase. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to comprehensively investigate the value of RIC for different organ transplantation.

Methods: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from inception to November 1, 2023, for randomized controlled trials investigating whether RIC has an advantage in organ transplantation (including heart, lung, liver, and kidney) compared with controls.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) combined with gastric coronary vein embolization (GCVE) for cirrhotic portal hypertensive variceal bleeding and compare outcomes of first-line with second-line treatment, coil with glue, and single-covered with double stents. Fifteen patients received TIPS plus GCVE as the first-line treatment for secondary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding, and 45 received it as second-line treatment. Preoperative and postoperative quantitative variables were compared using a paired t test.

Aim: To evaluate the diagnostic and differential efficacy of diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) histogram analysis for different motor subtypes of Parkinson's disease (PD).

Materials And Methods: Seventy PD patients including 40 with postural instability and gait disorder (PIGD) and 30 with tremor-dominant (TD) and 36 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled prospectively and underwent MRI examinations. The regions of interest (ROI) in the deep brain nuclei were delineated and features were extracted on the map of mean kurtosis (MK), axial kurtosis (Ka), and radial kurtosis (Kr), respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammation and oxidative damage are linked to osteoarthritis progression, and Bardoxolone methyl (CDDO-Me), a synthetic compound, has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
  • Research indicates that CDDO-Me can inhibit osteoclast formation and degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) by activating specific pathways while suppressing harmful ones.
  • In experiments using a mouse model of osteoarthritis, CDDO-Me reduced cartilage loss and osteoclast numbers, highlighting its potential as a treatment for the disease.

Background: The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation between upper lumbar disc herniation (ULDH) and multifidus muscle degeneration via the comparison of width, the cross-sectional area and degree of fatty infiltration of the lumbar multifidus muscle.

Methods: Using the axial T2-weighted images of magnetic resonance imaging as an assessment tool, we retrospectively investigated 132 patients with ULDH and 132 healthy individuals. The total muscle cross-sectional area (TMCSA) and the pure muscle cross-sectional area (PMCSA) of the multifidus muscle at the L1/2, L2/3, and L3/4 intervertebral disc levels were measured respectively, and in the meantime, the average multifidus muscle width (AMMW) and degree of fatty infiltration of bilateral multifidus muscle were evaluated.

Hip-joint CT images have low organizational contrast, irregular shape of boundaries and image noises. Traditional segmentation algorithms often require manual intervention or introduction of some prior information, which results in low efficiency and is unable to meet clinical needs. In order to overcome the sensitivity of classical fuzzy clustering image segmentation algorithm to image noise, this paper proposes a fuzzy clustering image segmentation algorithm combining Gaussian regression model (GRM) and hidden Markov random field (HMRF).
