Serving as nanoelectrodes or frame units, small-volume metals may critically affect the performance and reliability of nanodevices, especially with feature sizes down to the nanometer scale. Small-volume metals usually behave extraordinarily in comparison with their bulk counterparts, but the knowledge of how their sizes and surfaces give rise to their extraordinary properties is currently insufficient. In this study, we investigate the influence of surface conditions on mechanical behaviors in nanometer-sized Pb crystals by performing mechanical deformation tests inside an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (TEM).

The investigation of the interaction between metal ions and DNA has always attracted much attention in the fields of bioinorganic chemistry, supramolecular coordination chemistry, and DNA nanotechnology. Its mode of action can be simply divided into two aspects. On the one hand, it is non-specific electrostatic adsorption, mainly including Na, K, Mg, Ca and other physiologically regulating ions; on the other hand, it is specific covalent binding, such as Pt, Hg, Ag and other heavy metal ions.

On the basis of an abundance of elemental plasmonic nanocrystals identifiable by their unique morphology and intrinsic optoelectronic properties, it is necessary to rationally tailor the structural parameters to optimize the functionalities of nanoassemblies for application as plasmonic circuits/devices. Among them, the plasmonic superlattice membrane has emerged as a novel optically active metamaterial, which is constructed by nanocrystals at a two-dimensional (2D) plane with a highly ordered structure and strong plasmonic coupling interactions. Here, we report on the fabrication of a novel plasmonic superlattice membrane using bimetallic core-shell nano-sea urchins (Nano-SEUs) as meta-atoms.

Plasmonic superlattice membrane exhibits remarkable functional properties that are emerging from engineered assemblies of well-defined "meta-atoms," which is featured as a conceptual new category of two-dimensional optical metamaterials. The ability to build plasmonic membranes over macroscopic surfaces but with nanoscale ordering is crucial for systematically controlling the light-matter interactions and represents considerable advances for the bottom-up fabrication of soft optoelectronic devices and circuits. Through rational design, novel nanocrystals, and by engineering the packing orders, the hybridized plasmon signature can be customized, promoting controllable near-field confinement for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based detection.

Due to the increasing coffee production, Spent Coffee Grounds' (SCGs) generation has grown dramatically, hence appropriate management of this solid biomass waste is imperative. SCGs can be used as feedstocks for renewable energy and fuel generation provided that a stable feeding of powders to reactors is maintained. Recently, a non-mechanical spouted bed feeder proved itself an excellent alternative in feeding SCGs to a pilot-scale circulating fluidized bed reactor.

Bimetallic Janus nanostructures (JNs) have been revealed to be valuable materials because they have unique intermetallic interfaces that enable their potential use in a range of applications. However, with the increasing miniaturization of electronic devices, particle sizes influence the structure and orientation of these heterointerfaces, which plays a significant role in their application. Our in situ annealing experiments with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy have shown that for particle sizes in the sub-10 nm range, CuAg JNs preferentially show a Cu(100)/Ag(100) interface, differing from the larger CuAg JNs, where the Cu(111)/Ag(111) interface is favored.

Herein, a novel transmission electron microscopy (TEM) method that allows high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy of nanomaterials under simultaneous application of different stimuli, such as light excitation, has been reported to directly explore structure-activity relationships targeted towards device optimization. However, the experimental development of a photoelectric system capable of combining atomic-level visualization with simultaneous electrical current measurement with picoampere-precision still remains a great challenge due to light-induced drift while imaging and noise in the electrical components due to background current. Herein, we report a novel photoelectric TEM holder integrating an LED light source covering the whole visible range, a shielding system to avoid current noise, and a picoammeter, which enables stable TEM imaging at the atomic scale while measuring very small photocurrents (pico ampere range).
