Background: Rural populations experience ongoing health inequities with disproportionately high morbidity and mortality rates, but digital health in rural settings is poorly studied. Our research question was: How does digital health influence healthcare outcomes in rural settings? The objective was to identify how digital health capability enables the delivery of outcomes in rural settings according to the quadruple aims of healthcare: population health, patient experience, healthcare costs and provider experience.

Methods: A multi-site qualitative case study was conducted with interviews and focus groups performed with healthcare staff (n = 93) employed in rural healthcare systems (n = 10) in the state of Queensland, Australia.

Improving health system responses when patients are harmed: a protocol for a multistage mixed-methods study.

BMJ Open

July 2024

Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Macquarie University, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Introduction: At least 10% of hospital admissions in high-income countries, including Australia, are associated with patient safety incidents, which contribute to patient harm ('adverse events'). When a patient is seriously harmed, an investigation or review is undertaken to reduce the risk of further incidents occurring. Despite 20 years of investigations into adverse events in healthcare, few evaluations provide evidence of their quality and effectiveness in reducing preventable harm.

Poly(adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors as maintenance therapy after first-line chemotherapy have improved progression-free survival in women with advanced ovarian cancer; however, not all PARP inhibitors can provide benefit for a biomarker-unselected population. Senaparib is a PARP inhibitor that demonstrated antitumor activity in patients with solid tumors, including ovarian cancer, in phase 1 studies. The multicenter, double-blind, phase 3 trial FLAMES randomized (2:1) 404 females with advanced ovarian cancer (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage III-IV) and response to first-line platinum-based chemotherapy to senaparib 100 mg (n = 271) or placebo (n = 133) orally once daily for up to 2 years.

FAM3D is essential for colon homeostasis and host defense against inflammation associated carcinogenesis.

Nat Commun

November 2020

Department of Immunology, School of Basic Medical Sciences and NHC Key Laboratory of Medical Immunology, Peking University, Beijing, 100191, P. R. China.

The physiological homeostasis of gut mucosal barrier is maintained by both genetic and environmental factors and its impairment leads to pathogenesis such as inflammatory bowel disease. A cytokine like molecule, FAM3D (mouse Fam3D), is highly expressed in mouse gastrointestinal tract. Here, we demonstrate that deficiency in Fam3D is associated with impaired integrity of colonic mucosa, increased epithelial hyper-proliferation, reduced anti-microbial peptide production and increased sensitivity to chemically induced colitis associated with high incidence of cancer.

Endometriosis is generally characterized as a tumor-like disease because of its potential for distant metastasis and local tissue invasion, while whether osteopontin (OPN) plays a role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis has not been thoroughly investigated. We investigated the expression of OPN, urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K), and phospho-PI3 kinase (p-PI3K) in endometrial stromal cells (ESCs). The serum concentration of OPN was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).

Department of Infectious Disease, Center for Liver Disease, Peking University First Hospital, No.8 Xishiku Street, Xicheng District, Beijing, China; Peking University International Hospital, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: A proportion of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection patients with normal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) should start antiviral therapy based on liver biopsy. We aim to evaluate the proportion of such patients, find noninvasive methods for identifying and then evaluate antiviral efficacy.

Methods: 253 chronic HBV infection patients with normal ALT were analyzed at baseline and 57 patients with histological indication for antiviral therapy (Histology activity index ≥5 and/or Ishak fibrosis score ≥3) and 140 patients with elevated ALT received entecavir therapy and were followed-up to 78 weeks with a second liver biopsy in this multi-center study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the problem of restenosis after angioplasty, which results from endothelial injury and leads to excessive growth of vascular smooth muscle cells.
  • Researchers aimed to explore whether exosomes from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-Exo) could inhibit neointimal hyperplasia in a rat model following carotid artery injury, investigating their mechanisms.
  • Results indicated that MSC-Exo were taken up by endothelial cells, reduced neointimal hyperplasia, and enhanced re-endothelialization, as shown by various staining and immunohistochemistry methods.
