The mechanical properties of the human skull have been examined and established previously in the literature, for example, the transversal isotropy of cranial bone and properties including the Elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio. However, despite the existing data, there are still mechanical properties which remain to be determined for the human skull. The present study aims to characterise the fracture properties of human cranial bone within the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) framework.

Silicon (Si) is considered a promising commercial material for the next-generation of high-energy density lithium-ion battery (LIB) due to its high theoretical capacity. However, the severe volume changes and the poor conductivity hinder the practical application of Si anode. Herein, a novel core-shell heterostructure, Si as the core and V O @C as the shell (Si@V O @C), is proposed by a facile solvothermal reaction.

Recently, aqueous Zn-based batteries (AZBs) are receiving increased attention in wearable and implantable electronics due to the low cost, high safety, high eco-efficiency, and relatively high energy density. However, it is still a big challenge to develop stretchable AZBs (SAZBs) which can be conformally folded, crumpled, and stretched with human body motions. Although a lot of efforts have been dedicated to constructions of SAZBs, a comprehensive review which focuses on summarizing stretchable materials, device configurations and challenges of SAZBs is needed.

Oxidative stress and inflammation play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury (ALI). Previously, pentapeptide bursopentin (BP5, Cys-Lys-Arg-Val-Tyr) was reported to possess significant antioxidant activity and inhibit lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced NF-κB activation in vitro, whereas little is known about its effects in vivo. In this study, we explored the effects of BP5 on endotoxemia-induced ALI in mice and the underlying molecular mechanisms.

NIR-II fluorescence imaging (NIR-II FI) and photothermal therapy (PTT) have received broad attentions in precise tumor diagnosis and effective treatment attributed to high-resolution and deep tissue imaging, negligible invasivity, and high-efficiency treatment. Although many fluorescent molecules have been designed and conducted for NIR-II FI and PTT, it is still an enormous challenge for researchers to pioneer some rational design guidelines to improve fluorescence brightness. Organic D-A-type molecules, including small molecules and conjugated polymers, can be designed and developed to improve fluorescence brightness due to their tunable and easy functionalized chemical structures, allowing molecules tailored photophysical properties.

NIR-II FI has emerged as a promising imaging tool for precise diagnosis and visualization towards various diseases, ascribed to its merits of attenuated light scattering and tissue absorption and ignorable auto-fluorescence. Owing to its superiority in high specificity, low toxicity, and ignorable invasiveness, photothermal therapy (PTT) has developed as one of the most potential treatment methods for cancer treatment. Although organic optical agents with a donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) skeleton have been extensively applied to NIR-II FI and PTT, most were based on the three weak electron acceptors benzobisthiadiazole (BBTD), diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP), and thiadiazoloquinoxaline (TTQ).

Objective: To search for the potential genes associated with the recurrence of prostate cancer (PCa) after radical prostatectomy so as to improve the prognosis of the patient.
Methods: The GSE25136 microarray dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), involving 39 recurrent and 40 non-recurrent PCa samples. Differentially expressed genes were identified with the Limma package and screened by hierarchical cluster analysis using the Pheatmap package.

Microbiota play critical roles in regulating colitis and colorectal cancer (CRC). However, it is unclear how the microbiota generate protective immunity against these disease states. Here, we find that loss of the innate and adaptive immune signaling molecule, TAK1, in myeloid cells (Tak1) yields complete resistance to chemical-induced colitis and CRC through microbiome alterations that drive protective immunity.

Increasing reports of neurological symptoms in COVID-19 patient's warrant clinicians to adopt and define the standardized diagnostic and managing protocols in order to investigate the linkage of neurological symptoms in COVID-19. Encephalitis, anosmia, acute cerebrovascular disease and ageusia are some of the emerging neurological manifestations which are reported in several cohort studies on hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Although the COVID-19 pandemic is primarily associated with infection of the respiratory tract system, but measures like lockdown and restricted physical movements to control the spread of this infection will certainly have neurobehavioural implications.

Objective: To explore the safety of modified sandwich urethral reconstruction (MSUR) in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) and its effect on the early recovery of urinary continence.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data on 20 patients treated by LRP with MSUR (the MSUR group) and another 21 cases of LRP without MSUR (the conventional control group) from January 2018 to September 2019. We compared the two groups of patients in the general data, anastomosis time, operation time and urinary continence recovery.

Background & Aims: The protease plasmin is an important wound healing factor, but it is not clear how it affects gastrointestinal infection-mediated damage, such as that resulting from Clostridioides difficile. We investigated the role of plasmin in C difficile-associated disease. This bacterium produces a spore form that is required for infection, so we also investigated the effects of plasmin on spores.

The concept of spread through air spaces (STAS) has been described as a new form of invasion in the lung in the 2015 WHO classification of Lung Tumors, namely invasion through alveolar spaces. STAS is a prognostic factor independent of growth pattern and tumor stage, and it is also an independent risk factor for unfavorable prognosis of stage I lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) and stage I lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The pathological characteristics are different between ADC and SCC.

Plasminogen (Plg)-binding M protein (PAM) is a group A streptococcal cell surface receptor that is crucial for bacterial virulence. Previous studies revealed that, by binding to the kringle 2 (KR2) domain of host Plg, the pathogen attains a proteolytic microenvironment on the cell surface that facilitates its dissemination from the primary infection site. Each of the PAM molecules in their dimeric assembly consists of two Plg binding motifs (called the a1 and a2 repeats).

Objective: To observe the effects of moxibustion at different temperatures (38 ℃ and 45 ℃) on blood lipoids and serum level of oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and nitric oxide (NO) in rats with hyperlipidemia, and to explore the correlation between regulating blood fat and anti-oxidative stress and protection of vascular endothelium of moxibustion at 45 ℃.
Methods: According to random number table, 60 SD rats were randomly divided into a normal group, a model group, a moxibustion at 38 ℃ group and a moxibustion at 45 ℃ group, 15 rats in each group. The rats in the normal group received no treatment; the rats in the remaining three groups were fed with high-fat diet for 8 weeks to prepare rat models of hyperlipidemia.
