The immobilization of phosphorus (P) in sediments plays a pivotal role in managing lake eutrophication over the long term. Therefore, key factors that may cause uncertainties in P fixation are of increasing interest to researchers. Calcium‑aluminum composites (CA) can passivate sediment P well; however, the effect of cyanobacterial bloom decline on their sediment P remediation remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • - Yoga is effective in treating binge eating disorder (BED), with significant improvements in binge eating scale scores and physical fitness metrics like maximal oxygen consumption from pre-to-post intervention.
  • - High-intensity interval training (HIIT), while successful in enhancing physical fitness and body composition, does not improve BED symptoms as seen in the yoga group.
  • - Both HIIT and yoga groups showed better fitness levels compared to a control group, but yoga led to significantly lower binge eating scores, highlighting its particular benefit for BED.

Key Laboratory for Polymeric Composite and Functional Materials of Ministry of Education, GD HPPC Lab, School of Chemistry, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510275, China. Electronic address:

Corrosion of steel in the marine environment greatly reduces their service life. Polymeric coatings are the most popular anticorrosion technology, but seawater penetration cannot be prohibited because of the distinct stacking structure of the macromolecular chains. In this context, a novel anticorrosive hyperbranched polyurethane-based coating with dopamine (DOPA) at the terminals is prepared herein.

Redox-Driven Formation of Mn(III) in Ice.

Environ Sci Technol

August 2024

Department of Chemistry, Umeå University, SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how freezing temperatures enhance the formation of soluble manganese(III) complexes from manganese(II) and manganese(IV) oxides in natural waters, focusing on the reactions occurring at ice boundaries.
  • It reveals that low salt conditions favor Mn(III) yields while high salt concentrations can affect the process differently by promoting complexation but ultimately reducing yield due to dehydration effects.
  • Repeated freeze-thaw cycles significantly increase dissolved Mn(III) concentrations, achieving up to 80% conversion after seven cycles, highlighting the importance of these reactions in high-latitude environments affected by freeze-thaw conditions.

The development of sustainable methods for the control and bio-stabilization of arsenic in sediments, without generating secondary pollution, is an urgent technological need. In this study, we utilized three types of natural carbon-containing biomass (NCCB) to explore the stabilization of arsenic through the synergistic action of native sediment microbiomes. We also examined the metabolic pathways of microorganisms following the introduction of NCCB into high-arsenic sediments, aiming to elucidate the biological processes critical for arsenic bio-stabilization.

Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic and alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD) has no effective treatment, but the water extract of Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. (WECM) shows promise due to its anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties.
  • The study tested WECM on MetALD rats, assessing its impact on liver health and underlying mechanisms over a six-week period through various biochemical and microbiota analyses.
  • Results indicated that WECM significantly improved liver conditions, helped restore gut microbiota balance, activated beneficial signaling pathways, and enhanced lipid metabolism, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent for MetALD.

Phellintremulin A (1), a rearranged sesquiterpenoid with an unprecedented bicyclic backbone, and two previously unreported illudane-type sesquiterpenoids, namely phellintremulin B (2) and phellintremulin C (3), together with two known analogues (±)‒4 and (±)‒5, were isolated from cultures of the medicinal fungus Phellinus tremulae. Their structures and absolute configurations were established by means of spectroscopic data and HRESIMS analyses, as well as ECD and NMR calculations. A plausible biogenesis for 1 was discussed.

The widespread use of glyphosate (Gly) poses significant risks to environmental and human health, underscoring the urgent need for its sensitive and rapid detection. In this work, we innovated by developing a novel material, ionic liquids, which formed the ionic probe "[P][2,3-DHN]-Cu (PDHN-Cu)" through coordination with Cu. This probe capitalized on the distinctive fluorescence quenching properties of ionic liquids in the presence of Cu, driven by synergistic interactions between anions and cations.

Food fraud caused by the violation of glyphosate use in tea is frequently exposed, posing a potential health risk to consumers and undermining trust in food safety. In the work, an ionic fluorescent probe "[P] [4HQCA]-Cu (PHQCA-Cu)" was constructed using Cu and ionic liquids coordination through a competitive coordination strategy to detect glyphosate. This probe exhibited a prominent "turn-on" fluorescence response in glyphosate detection.

  • In muscular dystrophies, muscle fibers deteriorate and die, leading to suffering and early mortality, but extraocular muscles (EOMs) remain functional despite disease progression.
  • Research on zebrafish reveals significant differences in gene expression between EOMs and trunk muscles, particularly focusing on the LIM-protein Fhl2.
  • The study suggests Fhl2 plays a protective role against muscle dystrophies and could be a potential target for therapeutic intervention, as its expression can improve outcomes in zebrafish models of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Developing efficient nonprecious bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) in the same electrolyte with a low overpotential and large current density presents an appealing yet challenging goal for large-scale water electrolysis. Herein, a unique 3D self-branched hierarchical nanostructure composed of ultra-small cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanoparticles embedded into N, P-codoped carbon nanotubes knitted hollow nanowall arrays (CoPʘNPCNTs HNWAs) on carbon textiles (CTs) through a carbonization-phosphatization process is presented. Benefiting from the uniform protrusion distributions of CoP nanoparticles, the optimum CoPʘNPCNTs HNWAs composites with high abundant porosity exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity and excellent stability for OER in alkaline conditions, as well as for HER in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes, even under large current densities.
