Globally, and nationally in Australia, bushfires are expected to increase in frequency and intensity due to climate change. To date, protection of human health from fire smoke has largely relied on individual-level actions. Recent bushfires experienced during the Australian summer of 2019-2020 occurred over a prolonged period and encompassed far larger geographical areas than previously experienced, resulting in extreme levels of smoke for extended periods of time.

Purpose: While elective primary total hip (THA) and knee (TKA) arthroplasty are effective procedures for addressing the symptoms associated with advanced osteoarthritis, there is evidence to suggest that patient anxiety and depression are linked to poorer outcomes following surgery.
Methods: A secondary analysis of prospectively-collected data of people undergoing primary elective THA or TKA for osteoarthritis across 19 hospitals was performed. We assessed outcomes at 1 year post-surgery for people with and without medically treated anxiety and/or depression at the time of surgery (A/D and no-A/D).

The learning curve for novices developing regional anaesthesia skills, such as real-time ultrasound-guided needle manipulation, may be affected by innate visuospatial ability, as this influences spatial cognition and motor co-ordination. We conducted a multinational randomised controlled trial to test if novices with low visuospatial ability would perform better at an ultrasound-guided needling task with deliberate practice training than with discovery learning. Visuospatial ability was evaluated using the mental rotations test-A.
