Article Synopsis
  • - Dry eye disease (DED) is primarily caused by inflammation on the surface of the eye, and treating it effectively starts with early anti-inflammatory medications like cyclosporine A (CsA).
  • - There is a lack of comprehensive recommendations for how to use topical CsA in treating DED in real-world clinical settings.
  • - The article provides expert consensus on practical guidelines for DED management, covering when to start CsA, how long to use it, comparing CsA products approved in Russia, and the importance of educating patients.

J Hepatol

October 2024

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Foundation IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy; CRC A. M. and A. Migliavacca Center for Liver Disease, Department of Pathophysiology and Transplantation, University of Milan, Milan, Italy.

Background & Aims: Bulevirtide (BLV), a first-in-class entry inhibitor, is approved in Europe for the treatment of chronic hepatitis delta (CHD). BLV monotherapy was superior to delayed treatment at week (W) 48, the primary efficacy endpoint, in the MYR301 study (NCT03852719). Here, we assessed if continued BLV therapy until W96 would improve virologic and biochemical response rates, particularly among patients who did not achieve virologic response at W24.

The review is devoted to a comparative analysis of the clinical efficacy of the original domestic derivatives of 3-hydroxypyridine and succinic acid (emoxipine, reamberin and mexidol) in comparison with the results of an experimental study of their dopaminergic action. The position that the dopaminomimetic activity of emoxipin, reamberin and mexidol largely determines their anti-ischemic, antihypoxic, insulin-potentiating neuroprotective, nootropic and antidepressant potential has been substantiated. A comparative analysis of the safety profile of emoxipine, reamberin and mexidol was carried out, taking into account potential and real side-effects caused by iatrogenic deviations from the eudopaminergic state.

This editorial describes the contemporary concepts of prevention and management of gastroesophageal variceal bleeding in liver cirrhosis (LC) patients according to the current guidelines. Gastroesophageal variceal bleeding is the most dangerous complication of portal hypertension in LC patients. Risk stratification and determination of an individual approach to the choice of therapeutic measures aimed at their prevention and management has emerged as one of the top concerns in modern hepatology.

Reparative properties of infrared laser exposure are well known, but the effects of green laser light are little studied. We analyzed the effects of short (60 sec) and longer (180 sec) exposure to infrared (980 nm) and green (520 nm) laser on the number of activated myosatellite cells in the regenerating m. gastrocnemius of Wistar rats after infliction of an incision wound.

Unlabelled: In recent years, among artificial tear preparations that have additional metabolic properties, in addition to moisturizing the ocular surface, there has been a drug Optinol Soft Recovery (LLC JADRAN). In addition to 0.15% sodium hyaluronate, it contains 2% dexpanthenol, which stimulates reparative regeneration of the corneal epithelium, in particular in patients with dry eye syndrome (DES).

Objective: Comparative analysis of in-hospital and long-term mortality of patients in whom acute dysfunction of coronary bypass grafts was detected in the early postoperative period depending on conservative or surgical tactics.

Material And Methods: The study is a retrospective analysis of data from 8801 patients who underwent elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) between 2011 and 2022 at the Federal Center for Cardiovascular Surgery (Russia, Chelyabinsk). Among them, 196 patients underwent emergency coronary artery bypass grafting due to suspected perioperative myocardial infarction in the early postoperative period.

Unlabelled: In recent decades, there has been an increase in the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) not only in older people, but also in young people, which is potentially associated with the use of digital devices. Early detection of signs of DED and the appointment of preventive tear replacement therapy can help stabilize the tear film and slow down the progression of the disease.

Purpose: To study risk factors, prevalence and clinical manifestations of DED in young people, to determine indications and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment with artificial tears.

Background: The study aims to identify the incidence of symptomatic and asymptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) after minimally invasive varicose vein surgery and to assess the predictability of the Caprini risk score (CRS).

Methods: CAPrini Score In Venous Surgery (NCT03041805) is a registry-based prospective study that enrolls patients undergoing minimally invasive open (high ligation, stripping, miniphlebectomy) and endovascular (thermal and non-thermal ablation) surgery on varicose veins. The main inclusion criteria are CRS assessment before intervention and a duplex ultrasound scan performance within 2-4 weeks after surgery.

The review is devoted to the assessment of the pharmacological effects of 3-hydroxypyridine and succinic acid derivatives (emoxipin, reamberin and mexidol) from the standpoint of their dopaminergic activity. A systematic analysis of the data has been performed, allowing us to consider emoxipin, reamberin and mexidol as «normalizers of dopaminergic neurotransmission», the dopaminergic action of which in its phenotype corresponds to the effects of partial dopamine receptor agonists. The position that the dopaminergic effect, antioxidant and antidepressant potential of drugs containing 2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-oxypyridine (emoxipine and mexidol) are associated with their inhibitory effect on monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A) has been substantiated.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a worldwide health problem for women. They cause complications in up to 10% of pregnancies and are associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Traditional blood pressure measurement in clinical practice is the most commonly used procedure for diagnosing and monitoring hypertension treatment, but it is prone to significant inaccuracies caused, on the one hand, by the inherent variability of blood pressure and, on the other, by errors arising from measurement technique and conditions.

Introduction: Oxidative stress considered to be the main cause of male infertility. Surgical treatment of varicocele and elimination of the inflammatory process in the male accessory glands can help reduce the level of oxidative stress, however, in most cases, antioxidant therapy is additionally prescribed. Currently, much attention is paid to regulatory peptides as a component of antioxidant therapy due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.

The preoperative diagnostics of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), including the measuring of the blood calcitonin level, has a number of limitations. Particular focus has recently been placed on the role of miRNAs in the development of various malignant tumors; a comparative analysis of accuracy of the existing methods for MTC diagnosis with a novel diagnosis method, evaluation of the miRNA-375 expression level, was performed in this study. The expression level of miRNA-375 in cytology samples from 555 patients with the known histological diagnosis, including 41 patients with confirmed postoperative diagnosis of MTC, was assessed.
