Copper (Cu) is essential for brain development and function, yet its overload induces neuronal damage and contributes to neurodegeneration and other neurological disorders. Multiple studies demonstrated that Cu neurotoxicity is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, routinely assessed by reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential. Nonetheless, the role of alterations of mitochondrial dynamics in brain mitochondrial dysfunction induced by Cu exposure is still debatable.

Could Be a Promising Marker for Preoperative Diagnosis of High-Grade Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma?

Diagnostics (Basel)

November 2024

Department of the Structure and Function of Chromosomes, Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk 630090, Russia.

Background/objectives: A modern classification distinguishes between two nosological entities posing an intermediate risk between differentiated and anaplastic carcinoma: poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma and differentiated high-grade thyroid carcinoma. There are currently few studies searching for the preoperative molecular genetic markers of high-grade papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC HG), primarily because of a recent WHO reclassification and singling out of a separate entity: high-grade follicular cell-derived nonanaplastic thyroid carcinoma. Therefore, this work was aimed at identifying PTC HG-specific microRNAs and mRNAs that reliably distinguish them from differentiated papillary thyroid carcinoma in preoperative cytology specimens (fine-needle aspiration biopsies).

Article Synopsis
  • A new microscopic diagnostic sign for asphyxial drowning has been discovered in white male rats, indicating changes in the laryngeal mucosa.
  • The research showed significant hyperplasia (increase in the number of cells) of serotonin-containing APUD-cells in the larynx when rats experienced acute anoxia, compared to healthy controls.
  • These changes may trigger laryngospasm, which helps prevent water from entering the airways during drowning, suggesting this hyperplasia can be a useful diagnostic criterion in research on drowning.

Background: The majority of deaths in patients with schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses (SMIs) are caused by natural causes, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The increased risk of CVD and other somatic diseases in SMIs cannot be fully explained by the contribution of traditional risk factors, behavioral risk factors, patients' lifestyle peculiarities, and the influence of antipsychotics. The present review has the following main objectives: (1) to aggregate evidence that neurodevelopmental disorders are the basis of SMIs; (2) to provide a review of studies that have addressed the shared genetic architecture of SMI and cardiovascular disease; and (3) to propose and substantiate the consideration of somatic diseases as independent endophenotypes of SMIs, which will make it possible to place the research of somatic diseases in SMIs within the framework of the concepts of the "neurodevelopmental continuum and gradient" and "endophenotype".

Molecular genetic events are among the numerous factors affecting the clinical course of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Recent studies have demonstrated that aberrant expression of miRNA, as well as different thyroid-related genes, correlate with the aggressive clinical course of PTC and unfavorable treatment outcomes, which opens up new avenues for using them in the personalization of the treatment strategy for patients with PTC. In the present work, our goal was to assess the applicability of molecular markers in the preoperative diagnosis of aggressive variants of papillary thyroid cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • In hypertensive patients, central hemodynamics like central blood pressure and pulse wave velocity are better indicators of cardiovascular events compared to traditional peripheral blood pressure measurements.
  • A study involving 591 patients found that factors like older age, female sex, and existing cardiovascular disease significantly increased the risk of negative outcomes, with 104 cardiovascular events recorded over about four years.
  • Although certain central measurements were initially linked to increased risks, they weren't strong independent predictors when controlling for other patient characteristics.
