The hydrolysis phase is recognized as the bottleneck in the anaerobic conversion of food waste. This study firstly investigates an innovative surfactant-enhanced thermal hydrolysis (STH) process, using alkyl polyglucoside (APG), a bio-based surfactant, in combination with improved response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize pretreatment conditions for volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production in anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste. The synergistic effects of the coupled technology and its impact on acid production were explored, and the contributions of the pretreatment techniques were quantified.

The study of quantum geometry effects in materials has been one of the most important research directions in recent decades. The quantum geometry of a material is characterized by the quantum geometric tensor of the Bloch states. The imaginary part of the quantum geometry tensor gives rise to the Berry curvature while the real part gives rise to the quantum metric.

Aging is a process that represents the accumulation of changes in organism overtime. In biological level, accumulations of molecular and cellular damage in aging lead to an increasing risk of diseases like sarcopenia. Sarcopenia reduces mobility, leads to fall-related injuries, and diminishes life quality.

Aqueous soluble and stable Cu(I) molecular catalysts featuring a catenane ligand composed of two dicationic, mutually repelling but mechanically interlocked macrocycles are reported. The ligand interlocking not only fine-tunes the coordination sphere and kinetically stabilizes the Cu(I) against air oxidation and disproportionation, but also buries the hydrophobic portions of the ligands and prevents their dissociation which are necessary for their good water solubility and a sustained activity. These catenane Cu(I) complexes can catalyze the oxidative C-C coupling of indoles and tetrahydroisoquinolines in water, using HO as a green oxidant with a good substrate scope.

  • Crohn's disease (CD) and intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) are often confused for each other, but they require different treatments and prognoses, highlighting the need for accurate diagnosis.
  • A study involving 72 tissue samples used advanced techniques like infrared spectroscopy and machine learning to differentiate between CD and ITB.
  • The developed diagnostic model achieved high accuracy (91.84%), specificity (92.59%), and sensitivity (90.90%), suggesting that this method could effectively distinguish between the two diseases at a molecular level.

Role of remnant cholesterol in the relationship between physical activity and diabetes mellitus: an intermediary analysis.

Front Public Health

March 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, School of Public Health, Guangdong Medical University, Dongguan, Guangdong, China.

Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the potential link between physical activity (PA) and the heightened susceptibility to diabetes mellitus (DM), by examining whether remnant cholesterol (RC) might act as a mediator in this correlation.

Methods: The research utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, spanning from 2005 to 2018. Various statistical analyses were conducted for continuous and categorical variables, including the -test, ANOVA, and χ test.

Wogonoside Ameliorates Airway Inflammation and Mucus Hypersecretion via NF-κB/STAT6 Signaling in Ovalbumin-Induced Murine Acute Asthma.

J Agric Food Chem

April 2024

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Shenzhen Institute of Respiratory Diseases, Shenzhen People's Hospital, South University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen 518020, China.

Asthma is recognized as a chronic respiratory illness characterized by airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness. Wogonoside, a flavonoid glycoside, is reported to significantly alleviate the inflammation response and oxidative stress. Herein, this study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect and underlying mechanism of wogonoside on airway inflammation and mucus hypersecretion in a murine asthma model and in human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE).

February 2024

Department of Orthopedics, the First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, Guangdong Provincial Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Orthopedic Technology, Shenzhen 518035, Guangdong, China.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are increasingly used for disease diagnosis and treatment. Among them, red blood cell-derived EVs (RBC-EVs) have attracted great attention due to their abundant sources and low risks of gene transfer (RBC-EVs lack nuclear and mitochondrial DNA). Here, we first revealed the high expression level of membrane protein solute carrier family 4 member 1 (SLC4A1) in RBC-EVs through proteomic analysis.

State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China.

Coronaviruses (CoVs) pose a major risk to global public health due to their ability to infect diverse animal species and potential for emergence in humans. The CoV spike protein mediates viral entry into the cell and plays a crucial role in determining the binding affinity to host cell receptors. With particular emphasis on α- and β-coronaviruses that infect humans and domestic animals, current research on CoV receptor use suggests that the exploitation of the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor poses a significant threat for viral emergence with pandemic potential.

Increasing evidence indicates that mutations and dysregulation of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) play a crucial role in the pathogenesis and prognosis of complex human diseases. Computational methods for predicting the association between lncRNAs and diseases have gained increasing attention. However, these methods face two key challenges: obtaining reliable negative samples and incorporating lncRNA-disease association (LDA) information from multiple perspectives.

The effective and persistent suppression of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in patients with chronic HBV infection (CHB) is considered to be a promising approach to achieve a functional cure of hepatitis B. In our previous study, we found that the antibody E6F6 can clear HBsAg through FcγR-mediated phagocytosis, and its humanized form (huE6F6 antibody) is expected to be a new tool for the treatment of CHB. Previous studies have shown that the glycosylation of Fc segments affects the binding of antibodies to FcγR and thus affects the biological activity of antibodies .
