Creation of bio-multifunctional wound dressings with potent hemostatic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenesis features for bolstering the healing of full-thickness wounds is sought after for clinical applications. We created bio-multifunctional composite sponges by coupling alginate and chitosan with polysaccharides through electrostatic interactions, calcium ion (Ca) crosslinking, and lyophilization. Alginate/chitosan (AC) sponges with different concentrations of polysaccharides were obtained and termed AC, ACS-1%, ACS-2.

Low temperature storage alleviates internal browning of 'Comte de Paris' winter pineapple fruit by reducing phospholipid degradation, phosphatidic acid accumulation and membrane lipid peroxidation processes.

Food Chem

March 2023

Hainan Key Laboratory of Banana Genetic Improvement, Haikou Experimental Station, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, Haikou 571101, China. Electronic address:

To uncover the mechanism underlying membrane lipid metabolism of low temperature induced internal browning tolerance in pineapple, membrane phospholipid alterations of harvested 'Comte de Paris' winter pineapple fruit stored at either 10 °C or 25 °C was investigated. Fruit stored at 10 °C developed low levels of internal browning as compared to fruit stored at 25 °C and was associated with high contents of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine, and phosphatidylethanolamine, and low levels of phosphatidic acid. Storage at 10 °C down-regulated the expression levels of phospholipase As.

Chitosan (CS) is a natural marine polysaccharide with good biocompatibility and biodegradability. But its poor water solubility and antibacterial activity limit its application in fruits preservation. In this study, based on the advantage of quaternary phosphonium salt (QP) and salicylic acid (SA) with good antibacterial activities and different antibacterial mechanisms, a novel antibacterial coating material was synthesized by grafting QP and SA onto CS.

In order to find out the optimized technological parameters of rice straw bowl tray, the forming test was carried out with the slurry made of rice straw as the main raw material and the pneumatic molding machine as the equipment. The orthogonal rotational combination test of ternary quadratic regression and response surface analysis method were used to study the effect of 3 molding factors (vacuum degree, pressure preservation time and adsorption time) on 3 molding technical indices (bowl hole molding rate, relaxation density and rupture-resisting strength). Design-Expert data analysis software was used to establish regression models between rice straw bowl tray molding factors and molding properties so as to obtain optimal technological parameters, which were as follows: vacuum degree: -0.

Key Laboratory for Postharvest Physiology and Technology of Tropical Horticultural Products of Hainan Province, South Subtropical Crop Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, Zhanjiang, China.

Excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leads to potential toxicity in an organism. Class III peroxidases (PRXs) play an important role in maintaining ROS homeostasis in plants. Internal browning (IB) limits industrial development of pineapple, which is the third most important fruit trade in the world.

Conductive hydrogels (CHs) are ideal electrolyte materials for the preparation of flexible supercapacitors (FSCs) due to their excellent electrochemical properties, mechanical properties, and deformation restorability. However, most of the reported CHs are prepared by the chemical crosslinking of synthetic polymers and thus usually display the disadvantages of poor self-healing abilities and nonadaptability at environmental temperatures, which greatly limits their application. To overcome these problems, in the present work, we constructed a sodium alginate-borax/gelatin double-network conductive hydrogel (CH) by a dynamic crosslinking between sodium alginate (SA) and borax via borate bonds and hydrogen bonding between amino acids in gelatin and SA chains.

Teosinte branched 1/cycloidea/proliferating cell factor (TCP) transcription factors play a key role in the regulation of plant biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, our results show that SmTCP7a positively regulated bacterial wilt that was caused by ChIP-seq was conducted to analyze the transcriptional regulation mechanism of SmTCP7a before (R0 h) and 48 h after infection (R48 h). SmTCP7a regulated a total of 92 and 91 peak-associated genes in R0 h and R48 h, respectively.

Traditional aerogels lack specific functional groups for the adsorption of Pb, which results in a low adsorption capacity and limits the application scope. Novel porous pectin-based aerogels (PPEAs) were prepared by incorporating polyethylenimine (PEI) using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) as a cross-linker for the removal of Pb from water. The cross-linking mechanism, morphology, mechanical strength, thermal stability, adsorption properties, and mechanism of the aerogels were investigated.

Multi-Functional Core-Shell Nanofibers for Wound Healing.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

June 2021

Institute for Frontier Materials, Deakin University, Geelong, VIC 3216, Australia.

Core-shell nanofibers have great potential for bio-medical applications such as wound healing dressings where multiple drugs and growth factors are expected to be delivered at different healing phases. Compared to monoaxial nanofibers, core-shell nanofibers can control the drug release profile easier, providing sustainable and effective drugs and growth factors for wound healing. However, it is challenging to produce core-shell structured nanofibers with a high production rate at low energy consumption.
