The Quantum Computing for Drug Discovery Challenge, held at the 42nd International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD) in 2023, was a multi-month, research-intensive competition. Over 70 teams from more than 65 organizations from 12 different countries registered, focusing on the use of quantum computing for drug discovery. The challenge centered on designing algorithms to accurately estimate the ground state energy of molecules, specifically OH+, using quantum computing techniques.

Some colorectal cancer patients have experienced normal epithelial transformation into inflammatory and tumor states, but the molecular basis still needs to be further determined. The expression levels of SIX4 are gradually increased in dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) and azoxymethane (AOM)/DSS-induced colonic epithelial inflammation and tumors, respectively, in mice. Targeting SIX4 alleviates intestinal inflammation occurrence and reduces adenoma formation in mice.

Background: Point-of-care (PoC) hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA viral load (VL) assays represent an alternative to laboratory-based standard-of-care (SoC) VL assays to accelerate diagnosis and treatment. We evaluated the impact of using PoC versus SoC approaches on the uptake of VL testing, treatment, and turnaround times from testing to treatment across the HBV care cascade.
Methods: We searched 5 databases, 6 conference websites, and contacted manufacturers for unpublished reports, for articles with or without a comparator (SoC VL testing), and had data on the uptake of VL testing, treatment, or turnaround times between hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) testing, VL testing, and treatment in the cascade.

Background: Contrast-enhanced CT scans provide a means to detect unsuspected colorectal cancer. However, colorectal cancers in contrast-enhanced CT without bowel preparation may elude detection by radiologists. We aimed to develop a deep learning (DL) model for accurate detection of colorectal cancer, and evaluate whether it could improve the detection performance of radiologists.

Background: Numerous studies have examined the association between obesity and age at menarche (AAM), with most focusing on traditional obesity indicators such as body mass index. However, there are limited studies that explored the connection between body fat distribution and AAM, as well as a scarcity of Mendelian randomization (MR) studies.
Methods: In this study, we conducted a two-sample MR study to evaluate the causal effects of eight body fat distribution indicators on AAM.

To investigate the genetic and expression characteristics of transcription factor IIH (TFIIH) in pre-initiationcomplex in prostate cancer (PCa) and its relationship with prostate cancer progression. Analyzing the expression characteristics and clinical signification of TFIIH subunits about 495 cases of PCa and 52 cases of adjacent cancer in The Cancer Genome Atlas-Prostate adenocarcinoma (TCGA-PRAD) database. PCa microarray chip was used to verify the correlation between the key factor General Transcription Factor IIH Subunit 4 (GTF2H4) in TFIIH and clinical features.

Coronary slow flow (CSF) is characterized by slow progression of coronary angiography without epicardial stenosis. The aim of this study was to explore the potential biomarkers and regulatory mechanism for CSF. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 3 cases of CSF and 3 healthy controls were collected for high-throughput sequencing of mRNA and miRNA, respectively.

Breast cancer stands as the foremost cause of cancer-related mortality among women, presenting a substantial economic impact on society. The limitations in current therapeutic options, coupled with poor patient tolerance, underscore the urgent need for novel treatments. Our study embarked on a genomic association exploration of breast cancer, leveraging whole-genome sequencing data from the Finngen database, complemented by expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) insights from the eQTLGen and GTEx Consortiums.

Reducing hepatitis B virus (HBV) mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) is a fundamental step toward the HBV elimination goal. The multicentred, multilevel SHIELD program aimed to use an intense intervention package to reduce HBV MTCT in China. This study was conducted in diverse health settings across China, encompassing 30,109 pregnant women from 178 hospitals, part of the interim analysis of stage II of the SHIELD program, and 8,642 pregnant women from 160 community-level health facilities in stage III of the SHIELD program.

Many types of tumors feature aerobic glycolysis for meeting their increased energetic and biosynthetic demands. However, it remains still unclear how this glycolytic phenomenon is achieved and coordinated with other metabolic pathways in tumor cells in response to growth stimuli. Here we report that activation of AKT1 induces a metabolic switch to glycolysis from the mitochondrial metabolism via phosphorylation of cytoplasmic malic enzyme 2 (ME2), named ME2fl (fl means full length), favoring an enhanced glycolytic phenotype.

Background: The adhesion and survival state of cells on scaffold material is a major problem in tissue-engineered blood vessel (TEBV) culture. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains a large amount of biologically active factors and fibrin, which is expected to play an important role in TEBV culture.
Purpose: To combine PRP with cells and scaffold material to promote cell adhesion and biological activity on the scaffold material.

Background: Many people who have a positive hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody (Ab) test never receive a confirmatory HCV RNA viral load (VL) test. Reflex VL testing may help address this problem. We undertook a systematic review to evaluate the effectiveness of reflex VL testing compared with standard nonreflex approaches on outcomes across the HCV care cascade.

This study aims to explore the auditory response characteristics of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) in awake mice during auditory information processing, so as to deepen the understanding of TRN and explore its role in the auditory system. By in vivo electrophysiological single cell attached recording of TRN neurons in 18 SPF C57BL/6J mice, we observed the responses of 314 recorded neurons to two kinds of auditory stimuli, noise and tone, applied to mice. The results showed that TRN received projections from layer six of the primary auditory cortex (A1).

Human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8) unrelated primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) like lymphoma (PEL-LL) is an exceedingly rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma with no characteristic symptoms and consensus on the optimal treatment. This case report presents a 55-year-old man with prior HBV-related Child-Pugh B liver cirrhosis and developing activity-related dyspnea. A moderate amount of pleural effusion was identified without tumor masses, and cytological studies confirmed a diagnosis of PEL-LL.

Dentin matrix protein 1 (Dmp1) is a highly phosphorylated, extracellular matrix protein that is extensively expressed in bone and teeth but also found in soft tissues, including brain and muscle. However, the functions of Dmp1 in the mice cochlea are unknown. Our study showed that Dmp1 was expressed in auditory hair cells (HCs), with the role of Dmp1 in those cells identified using Dmp1 cKD mice.

Secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) have emerged recently as a major component of fine particulate matter. Cell culture studies revealed a role for SOAs in cell oxidative stress, toxicity and inflammation and only a few studies investigated short-term SOA exposure in animal models. Here, mice were chronically exposed to naphthalene-derived SOAs for one and two months.
