Traumatic intra-abdominal hemorrhage contributes to mortality in patients with trauma. However, initiating an emergent laparotomy in the operating room (OR) as a standard treatment can sometimes be time-consuming. To overcome this issue, laparotomy is performed in the emergency room (ER) in some institutions.

Ubiquitin-specific protease 18 (USP18) is a multifunctional cysteine protease primarily responsible for deconjugating the interferon-inducible ubiquitin-like modifier ISG15 from protein substrates. Here, we report the design and synthesis of activity-based probes (ABPs) that incorporate unnatural amino acids into the C-terminal tail of ISG15, enabling the selective detection of USP18 activity over other ISG15 cross-reactive deubiquitinases (DUBs) such as USP5 and USP14. Combined with a ubiquitin-based DUB ABP, the USP18 ABP is employed in a chemoproteomics screening platform to identify and assess inhibitors of DUBs including USP18.

Optimizing process and heat-treatment parameters of laser powder bed fusion for producing Ti-6Al-4V alloys with high strength and ductility is crucial to meet performance demands in various applications. Nevertheless, inherent trade-offs between strength and ductility render traditional trial-and-error methods inefficient. Herein, we present Pareto active learning framework with targeted experimental validation to efficiently explore vast parameter space of 296 candidates, pinpointing optimal parameters to augment both strength and ductility.

Background: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) are antidiabetic drugs known for their minimal side effects and limited drug interaction witih immunosuppressants, making them suitable for patients with diabetes and kidney transplant recipients. However, there is limited real-world information regarding the use of DPP-4 inhibitors in patients with post transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM).
Method: We performed a retrospective observational cohort study of 13,828 kidney transplant recipients form Janary 1, 2002, through December 21, 2018, using the Korean National Health Information Database.

This study investigates the application of levan- produced from Paenibacillus polymyxa SG09-12 as an antiviral agent against cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). A high-purity microbial levan was produced and purified using diafiltration. The chemical composition, structure, and functional groups of the levan were characterised using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Tendons are anisotropic tissues with exceptional mechanical properties, which result from their unique anisotropic structure and mechanical behavior under stress. While research has focused on replicating anisotropic structures and mechanical properties of tendons, fewer studies have examined their specific mechanical behaviors. Here, we present a simple method for creating calcium-crosslinked alginate-based double-network hydrogels that mimics tendons by exhibiting anisotropic structure, high mechanical strength and toughness, and a distinctive "toe region" when stretched.

We investigate the effects of water-processable celluloses on the charge-transport properties in the conducting polymer composites and their solid-state organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Water-soluble methyl cellulose (MC) and water-dispersible cellulose nanofiber (CNF) are blended with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) in solution and used as a conductive channel. Both cellulose-PEDOT:PSS composites show fibrillar structures in thin films with respective dimensions of cellulose.

Background: Intrathecal morphine is the standard for post-cesarean analgesia but often causes pruritus and may be unavailable in resource-limited settings. This study assessed whether a combination of bilateral transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block and intrathecal fentanyl provides non-inferior analgesia compared with intrathecal morphine following cesarean delivery within the multimodal analgesia context.
Methods: Eighty mothers were randomized to receive either intrathecal fentanyl 10 µg with bilateral TAP block using 15 mL of 0.

Organic photodiodes (OPDs) are a significant focus for the next-generation of light-detection technologies. However, organic semiconductors in OPDs still face key challenges, such as low carrier mobilities and limited efficiency in generating photon-induced signals, which affect the detectable resolution and dynamic range. In this study, the characterization of the interaction between organic polymeric bulk heterojunctions and two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (MoS) reveals an enhancement in photocurrent due to improved photogeneration dynamics (e.

Rational design of heterostructure (HS)-based surface acoustic wave (SAW) smart gas sensors for efficient and accurate subppm level ammonia (NH) detection at room temperature (RT) is of great significance in environmental protection and human safety. This study introduced a novel HS composed of an AlN-based SAW resonator and CuO nanoparticles (NPs) as a chemical interface for NH detection at RT (∼26 °C). The structural, morphological, and chemical compositions were detailly investigated, which demonstrates that the CuO/AlN HS was successfully formed via interfacial modulation.

Background: P-element-induced wimpy testis (PIWI) proteins bind to PIWI-interactingRNAs (piRNAs) to form the piRNA/PIWI complex, which affects protein regulation. PIWIL4, a member of the PIWI family, has been demonstrated in recent studies to promote the migration of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell line MDA-MB-231. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying cell migration remain obscure.

Zophobas morio protein (ZMP) is a promising protein resource with notable biological properties, and its hydrolysis could unlock enhanced bioactivities. This study investigated ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis (UAEH) of ZMP using different enzymes (Alcalase, Neutrase, and Protamex) to determine its effect on the degree of hydrolysis (DH) compared to enzymatic hydrolysis (EH). UAEH showed greater hydrolysis efficiency than EH, with Alcalase exhibiting the highest DH.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized as a neurodegenerative disorder that is caused by plaque formation by accumulating β-amyloid (Aβ), leading to neurocognitive function and impaired mental development. Thus, targeting Aβ represents a promising target for the development of therapeutics in AD management. Several functionalized sulfonic acid molecules have been reported, including tramiprosate prodrug, which is currently in clinical trial III and exhibits a good response in mild to moderate AD patients.
