Introduction: Corona-virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a huge impact on the delivery of healthcare worldwide, particularly elective surgery. There is a lack of data regarding risk of postoperative COVID-19 infection in children undergoing elective surgery, and regarding the utility of pre-operative COVID-19 testing, and preoperative "cocooning" or restriction of movements. The purpose of this present study was to examine the safety of elective paediatric Otolaryngology surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic with respect to incidence of postoperative symptomatic COVID-19 infection or major respiratory complications.

We describe the cases of two immunocompetent children who developed mucositis with oral, ocular, and genital involvement during acute COVID-19 illness. The pattern of mucosal involvement with no other cutaneous involvement was consistent with reactive infectious mucocutaneous eruption (RIME). No other intercurrent infections or new medications were identified, suggesting that COVID-19 was causative.

Considerable recent research has indicated the presence of bacteria in a variety of human tumours and matched normal tissue. Rather than focusing on further identification of bacteria within tumour samples, we reversed the hypothesis to query if establishing the bacterial profile of a tissue biopsy could reveal its histology / malignancy status. The aim of the present study was therefore to differentiate between malignant and non-malignant fresh breast biopsy specimens, collected specifically for this purpose, based on bacterial sequence data alone.

Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is an effective locoregional therapy for cutaneous melanoma metastases and has been safely combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors in preliminary experiences. Since ECT is known to induce immunogenic cell death, its combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors might be beneficial. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of ECT on cutaneous melanoma metastases in combination with pembrolizumab.

Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is used to rule out SARS-CoV-2 prior to surgery, however few studies have evaluated patients with negative testing after surgery. Some 499 patients with negative tests were followed for 14 days after surgery, 39 were retested but none developed positive RT-PCR after operation. The risk of developing a positive RT-PCR after surgery was 0.

Purpose: Systematic identification of all 4 parathyroid glands has been recommended during total thyroidectomy (TT); however, it is unclear whether this strategy necessarily translates into optimized functional parathyroid preservation. We wished to investigate the association between number of parathyroids identified intraoperatively during TT, and incidence of incidental parathyroidectomy, and postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
Methods: Retrospective review of prospectively maintained database of 511 consecutive patients undergoing TT at an academic teaching hospital.

Introduction: Preoperative testing for COVID-19 has become widely established to avoid inadvertent surgery on patients with COVID-19 and prevent hospital outbreaks.
Methods: A prospective cross sectional study was carried out in two university hospitals examining the pre-operative protocols for patients undergoing otolaryngology surgery and the incidence of COVID-19 within 30 days of surgery in patients and the otolaryngologists performing surgery.
Results: One hundred and seventy-three patients were recruited.

To assess Irish dermatologists' confidence with dermatology in patients with skin of colour (SOC), an online survey was distributed to all members of the Irish Association of Dermatology (IAD) by email. Half (50%) of respondents were 'not confident' or 'not at all confident' in diagnosing skin conditions and one-third (33.9%) were 'not confident' or 'not at all confident' in managing skin conditions in patients with SOC.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by the formation of nodules, abscesses, and fistulae at intertriginous sites. The skin-gut axis is an area of emerging research in inflammatory skin disease and is a potential contributory factor to the pathogenesis of HS. A total of 59 patients with HS provided fecal samples and nasal and skin swabs of affected sites for analysis.

Purpose: Sialocele and salivary fistula are recognised complications of parotid surgery and have been reported to be more common with less extensive parotidectomy. We investigated the efficacy of tissue sealant(Cunniffe et al., 2019) as an alternative to surgical drainage in terms of length of hospital stay (LOS), cost, and incidence of wound complications.

Pain resulting from lower leg injuries and consequent surgery can be severe. There is a range of opinion on the use of regional analgesia and its capacity to obscure the symptoms and signs of acute compartment syndrome. We offer a multi-professional, consensus opinion based on an objective review of case reports and case series.

Neonatal diabetes (NDM) is defined as diabetes that occurs in the first 6 months of life, the majority of cases are due to sporadic mutations. ATP-sensitive potassium channels located in the beta cells of the pancreas play a major role in insulin secretion and blood glucose homeostasis. Mutations that alter the function of these channels may lead to NDM.
