About the Authors Brittney A. Meyer, PharmD, is professor of Pharmacy Practice, South Dakota State University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, Brookings, South Dakota. Alyssa R. Zweifel, PhD, RN, CNE, is assistant professor and director, Health Care Simulation Center, South Dakota State University College of Nursing. The authors thank Dr. Gemechis Djira and Margaret F. Germundson for assisting with statistical analysis for this research. For more information, contact Dr. Meyer at

The aim of the study was to compare the impact of a virtual simulation game to a poverty live interactive simulation with regard to perceptions of poverty. An interprofessional sample of pharmacy and nursing students completed pre/post surveys with 13 questions (total possible score: 39); the 395 responses were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance and descriptive statistics. The virtual group had a score improvement of 3.

Article Synopsis
  • Rural areas face higher rates of substance use disorder (SUD) and stigma, which affects treatment access.
  • A comparative study between rural Ohio (2020) and South Dakota (2022-2023) highlights significant differences in attitudes towards SUD, showing South Dakotans are more likely to view addiction as an illness.
  • The findings suggest that acknowledging SUD as an illness reduces stigma and increases support for harm reduction strategies, emphasizing the need for targeted anti-stigma campaigns to enhance treatment-seeking behaviors in rural communities.

Background: The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes and Entrustable Professional Activities (COEPA) recognize the need for social determinants of health (SDH) education for pharmacy learners. However, there is a dearth of published strategies for incorporating comprehensive SDH education in Doctor of Pharmacy curricula. The objectives of this study were to: 1) highlight unpublished exemplars of SDH teaching models and 2) propose strategies for teaching SDH.

Community pharmacists are often the most accessible member of the healthcare team to many patients and can play a key role in managing their chronic conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, through enhanced pharmacy services. Despite their accessibility, pharmacy services are often underutilized due, in part, to a lack of adequate reimbursement models that comprehensively encapsulate all elements of those pharmacy services. While routine documentation of services does collect certain qualitative data, they do not always indicate the nuance of the full scope of services with resulting robust impact and value of those services for the patient and healthcare system.

August 2024

Sanford Imagenetics, Sanford Health, Sioux Falls, SD, and Department of Internal Medicine, University of South Dakota School of Medicine, Vermillion, SD, USA.

Purpose: We describe the implementation and ongoing maintenance of CYP2C19 and CYP2D6 focused pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing to guide antidepressant and antianxiety medication prescriptions in a large rural, nonprofit health system.

Summary: Depression and anxiety are common psychiatric conditions. Sanford Health implemented PGx testing for metabolism of cytochrome P450 (CYP) isozymes 2C19 and 2D6 in 2014 to inform prescribing for multiple medications, including antidepressant and antianxiety therapies.

Background And Purpose: The purpose of this study was to use the first three levels of the Kirkpatrick Model to evaluate the effectiveness of a simulation center-based escape room activity designed to positively influence student learning.

Educational Activity And Setting: In this simulation, learners solve puzzles related to care of a critically ill patient. This activity was assessed via an assessment questionnaire (Kirkpatrick level 1), a pre/post learner knowledge quiz and learner self-assessment of skills and attitudes (Kirkpatrick level 2), and unstructured observation of learners upon return to the clinical environment (Kirkpatrick level 3).

Pharmacogenomics (PGx) aims to maximize drug benefits while minimizing risk of toxicity. Although PGx has proven beneficial in many settings, clinical uptake lags. Lack of clinician confidence and limited availability of PGx testing can deter patients from completing PGx testing.

Introduction: Peripheral neuropathy is a common condition with an estimated incidence of 3 million cases in the United States per year, with manifestations including weakness, numbness, burning or tingling sensations, and lingering pain. The burden of neuropathy may be greater among veterans due to the higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and an aging population. Among the medications used to treat neuropathy are duloxetine and pregabalin.

In 2016, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) published guidelines advising caution when using direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with morbid obesity due to limited clinical efficacy and safety data supporting their use in this patient population. In this review, we analyzed published articles in the MEDLINE database (from inception through May 29, 2019), and the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and EMBASE databases (from inception through April 26, 2019) that evaluated morbidly obese patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) or venous thromboembolism (VTE) who received DOACs. A total of 19 studies, which included pharmacokinetic studies, original phase III trials for the DOACs, post hoc analyses of phase III trials, and retrospective cohort studies, were evaluated.

Developing an antimicrobial stewardship program across a rural health system: The Avera Health experience.

Am J Health Syst Pharm

January 2019

Avera Health Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, Avera Medical Group Infectious Disease Specialists, Sioux Falls, SD.

Purpose: The stages of development of a health system-wide antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) using existing personnel and technology are described.

Summary: Small hospitals with limited resources may struggle to meet ASP requirements, particularly facilities without onsite infectious disease physicians and/or experienced infectious disease pharmacists. Strategies for ASP development employed by Avera Health, a 33-hospital health system in the Midwest, included identifying relevant drug utilization and resistance patterns, education and pathway development, and implementation of Web-based conferencing to provide pharmacists throughout the system with access to infectious disease expertise on a daily basis.

Aspirin's potential as a drug continues to be evaluated for the prevention of colorectal cancer (CRC). Although multiple targets for aspirin and its metabolite, salicylic acid, have been identified, no unifying mechanism has been proposed to clearly explain its chemopreventive effects. Our goal here was to investigate the ability of salicylic acid metabolites, known to be generated through cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes, and its derivatives as cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors to gain new insights into aspirin's chemopreventive actions.
