International norms for adult handgrip strength: A systematic review of data on 2.4 million adults aged 20 to 100+ years from 69 countries and regions.

J Sport Health Sci

November 2024

Alliance for Research in Exercise, Nutrition and Activity (ARENA), Allied Health and Human Performance, University of South Australia, Adelaide, SA, 5000, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • Muscular strength, particularly measured by handgrip strength (HGS), is an important indicator of health and a predictor of age-related diseases, but no international benchmarks exist for HGS across different ages and sexes.
  • The study systematically analyzed data from over 2.4 million adults across 69 countries to establish sex- and age-specific norms for HGS, identifying a peak in strength between ages 30 and 39 before a gradual decline.
  • Findings revealed that while absolute and body size-normalized HGS improves slightly in early adulthood, a more significant drop occurs from middle to late adulthood, with males generally experiencing a faster decline than females.

The monotypic Oriental genus Vitruvius Distant, 1901 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae), having an intricate and confusing taxonomic history, is revised. A new species, Vitruvius dobby Roca-Cusachs, Rider & Kment new species, is described from Cambodia and Thailand. Notes on the hypothesized classification of the genus based on both biology and morphology are presented, but its systematic placement is left unresolved.

  • The Mla locus in barley includes diverse genes that help the plant resist certain fungal pathogens through specific immune responses.
  • Researchers identified a gene, Scs6, that differs from Mla genes and makes barley susceptible to the necrotrophic fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana.
  • The Scs6 protein interacts with a peptide effector from the fungus to trigger cell death in barley, indicating it plays a role in disease susceptibility, and may lead to advancements in developing crops resistant to these pathogens.

Progeny array analysis to estimate outcrossing rates, inbreeding coefficients, and inbreeding depression among native, naturalized, and invasive populations of (Phrymaceae).

Front Plant Sci

November 2024

Department of Botany and Laboratories of Analytical Biology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, United States.

The mating system of non-native plant populations plays a role in determining the colonizing success following introduction into locations outside of the native distribution. For plant species capable of mixed-mating, both selfing and outcrossing can be advantageous and promote the establishment, persistence, and spread of newly arrived populations. To investigate how mating systems may contribute to the invasion process we estimated mating system parameters in perennial populations of the model plant species, from its native range (West coast USA), non-native populations that are established but have not become invasive (East coast USA, >50 years), and populations in invasive regions (UK >200 years).

  • Uranium, a toxic element found in U.S. drinking water, was studied to see if its levels in urine are linked to heart health in American Indian young adults.
  • The study analyzed data from over 1,300 participants, measuring urinary uranium and assessing heart function through echocardiography over several years.
  • Results showed higher urinary uranium levels were associated with negative changes in heart structure and function, indicating a possible risk for cardiovascular issues that merits further research.

University student perspectives on antimicrobial peptide use in farm animals.

PLoS One

December 2024

W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics, School of Population and Public Health, The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Growing awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in livestock production has led to calls for the development of alternatives such as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that are also able to combat infectious diseases in farm animals. A critical step in the development of AMPs is to understand people's perspectives towards this technology to avoid misalignment with societal expectations. The aim of this study was to investigate university student perspectives of AMP applications in farm animals as alternatives to antibiotic use.

Article Synopsis
  • Cockroaches show varying levels of susceptibility to Typhimurium infection, and their gut microbiota plays a key protective role against this colonization.
  • Research indicates that the presence of commensal bacteria in the gut does not directly compete with Typhimurium but helps activate the cockroach's defenses by boosting antimicrobial peptide production.
  • The study reveals that specific minority bacterial species, rather than the overall number or diversity of gut bacteria, are important for understanding infection susceptibility, highlighting cockroaches as a potential model for studying microbial interactions and reducing disease spread.

Polyphenols are potent antioxidants with anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and prebiotic effects. However, no meta-analysis of human studies has confirmed these properties in individuals with overweight or obesity and elucidated the underlying mechanisms. Hence, this work aimed to investigate the impact of polyphenols on gut microbiota composition, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and inflammatory markers in individuals with overweight or obesity from randomized controlled trials.

Ezrin, an actin-binding protein, orchestrates the organization of the cortical cytoskeleton and plasma membrane during cell migration, adhesion, and proliferation. Its role in monocytes/macrophages (MΦs) is less understood. Here, we used a monocyte/MΦ-specific ezrin knock-out mouse model to investigate the contribution of ezrin to monocyte recruitment and adaptation to the lung extracellular matrix (ECM) in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Pharmacists across the United States are rapidly gaining the ability to bill the medical benefit, increasing their ability to optimally and sustainably contribute to patient care. Medical billing is the process by which a provider submits a claim for reimbursement to the medical insurance benefit based on services provided to a patient. As pharmacists lean into new and expanding opportunities related to medical billing, pharmacy educators must also prepare graduates who can explain the importance of and execute skills related to medical billing.

Energy Expenditure and Maintenance Requirements in Non-Pregnant First-Parity Sows.

Animals (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB T6G 2P5, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • Five non-pregnant sows were studied to measure their energy expenditure through heat production while being fed different amounts of energy.
  • When fed at the maintenance energy requirement (1.0 ME), sows lost weight due to higher heat production than energy intake, whereas feeding them double the requirement (2.0 ME) resulted in weight gain and higher heat production.
  • The study suggests a recalibrated maintenance energy requirement of 506 kJ ME/kg for modern non-pregnant sows based on their energy consumption and expenditure observations.
