The glycoside hydrolase family 39 (GH39) proteins are renowned for their extremophilic and multifunctional enzymatic properties, yet the molecular mechanisms underpinning these unique characteristics continue to be an active subject of research. In this study, we introduce WsuXyn, a GH39 protein with a molecular weight of 58 kDa, originating from the thermophilic Geobacillus sp. WSUCF1.

Life on Earth has displayed remarkable adaptability to the harshest environments, spanning polar regions, scorching deserts, abyssal oceans, lightless caves, noxious lakes, boiling hot springs, and nuclear waste sites. These resilient organisms, known as extremophiles or polyextremophiles, owe their survival due to their unique genetic adaptations. This collection, titled ‘Genomics of Extreme Environments’, comprises several articles published in the esteemed journal Scientific Reports.

Notch signaling plays a critical role in cell fate decisions in all cell types. Furthermore, gain-of-function mutations in NOTCH1 have been uncovered in many human cancers. Disruption of Notch signaling has recently emerged as an attractive disease treatment strategy.

Decomposing vertebrates impact ecosystems by stimulating animal, insect, and microbial scavengers, perturbing biogeochemical cycles, and transferring elements back to the environment. Most studies exploring the impacts of vertebrate decomposition focus on surface decay scenarios over timescales of days to years. Accordingly, our knowledge of ecosystem impacts of vertebrate decomposition in burial contexts and over longer time scales is limited.

Plastic disposal and their degraded products in the environment are global concern due to its adverse effects and persistence in nature. To overcome plastic pollution and its impacts on environment, a sustainable bioplastic production using renewable feedstock's, such as algae, are envisioned. In this review, the production of polymer precursors such as polylactic acid, polyhydroxybutyrates, polyhydroxyalkanoates, agar, carrageenan and alginate from microalgae and macroalgae through direct conversion and fermentation routes are summarized and discussed.

Globally, due to widespread dispersion, intraspecific diversity, and crucial ecological components of halophilic ecosystems, bacteria is considered one of the key models for ecological, adaptative, and biotechnological applications research in saline environments. With this aim, the present study was to enlighten the plant growth-promoting features and investigate the systematic genome of a halophilic bacteria, ASH15, through single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing technology. Results showed that strain ASH15 could survive in high salinity up to 25% (w/v) NaCl concentration and express plant growth-promoting traits such as nitrogen fixation, plant growth hormones, and hydrolytic enzymes, which sustain salt stress.

Guanine-rich DNA can fold into highly stable four-stranded DNA structures called G-quadruplexes (G4). Originally identified in sequences from telomeres and oncogene promoters, they can alter DNA metabolism. Indeed, G4-forming sequences represent obstacles for the DNA polymerase, with important consequences for cell life as they may lead to genomic instability.

MXenes are a large family of two-dimensional materials with a general formula MXT, where M is a transition metal, X = C and/or N, and T represents surface functional groups. MXenes are synthesized by etching A-elements from layered MAX phases with a composition of MAX. As over 20 different chemical elements were shown to form A-layers in various MAX phases, we propose that they can provide an abundant source of very diverse MXene-based materials.

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated double-differential quasielasticlike neutrino-argon cross sections, which have been made using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data are presented as a function of kinematic imbalance variables which are sensitive to nuclear ground-state distributions and hadronic reinteraction processes. We find that the measured cross sections in different phase-space regions are sensitive to different nuclear effects.

We measured the nuclear-recoil ionization yield in silicon with a cryogenic phonon-sensitive gram-scale detector. Neutrons from a monoenergetic beam scatter off of the silicon nuclei at angles corresponding to energy depositions from 4 keV down to 100 eV, the lowest energy probed so far. The results show no sign of an ionization production threshold above 100 eV.

As state-of-the-art (SOA) lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries approach their specific energy limit (∼250 Wh kg), layer-structured, nickel-rich (Ni-rich) lithium transition metal oxide-based cathode materials, e.g., LiNiMnCoO (NMC811), have attracted great interest owing to their practical high specific capacities (>200 mAhg).

Asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) with two dissimilar electrodes are known to exhibit relatively moderate energy and power densities. If electrodes derived from earth-abundant materials or renewable resources such as lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) are used for fabrication, energy storage systems are expected to become less expensive and more sustainable. Hybrid electrode materials have advantages such as higher surface area, better chemical stability, and superior energy density.

Transition metal selenides (TMSs) are viewed as a prospective high-capacity electrode material for asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). However, the inability to expose sufficient active sites due to the limitation of the area involved in the electrochemical reaction severely limits their inherent supercapacitive properties. Herein, a self-sacrificing template strategy is developed to prepare self-supported CuCoSe (CuCoSe@rGO-NF) nanosheet arrays by in situ construction of copper-cobalt bimetallic organic framework (CuCo-MOF) on rGO-modified nickel foam (rGO-NF) and rational design of Se exchange process.

Spin is a way of reporting that distorts the true findings; we sought to investigate the prevalence of spin in systematic review abstracts on psoriasis treatments and whether study characteristics were associated with spin. We searched MEDLINE and Embase to obtain our sample. Screening and data extraction were performed in a masked duplicate fashion.

Cytotoxicity of nanoparticles, typically evaluated by biochemical-based assays, often overlook the cellular biophysical properties such as cell morphology and cytoskeletal actin, which could serve as more sensitive indicators for cytotoxicity. Here, we demonstrate that low-dose albumin-coated gold nanorods (HSA@AuNRs), although being considered noncytotoxic in multiple biochemical assays, can induce intercellular gaps and enhance the paracellular permeability between human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs). The formation of intercellular gaps can be attributed to the changed cell morphology and cytoskeletal actin structures, as validated at the monolayer and single cell levels using fluorescence staining, atomic force microscopy, and super-resolution imaging.

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos.

Controlling the domain evolution is critical both for optimizing ferroelectric properties and for designing functional electronic devices. Here we report an approach of using the Schottky barrier formed at the metal/ferroelectric interface to tailor the self-polarization states of a model ferroelectric thin film heterostructure system SrRuO/(Bi,Sm)FeO. Upon complementary investigations of the piezoresponse force microscopy, electric transport measurements, X-ray photoelectron/absorption spectra, and theoretical studies, we demonstrate that Sm doping changes the concentration and spatial distribution of oxygen vacancies with the tunable host Fermi level which modulates the SrRuO/(Bi,Sm)FeO Schottky barrier and the depolarization field, leading to the evolution of the system from a single domain of downward polarization to polydomain states.
