Coral reefs inhabit clear oceanic-type waters to turbid coastal regimes. For shallow coastal water environments, the coral reefs from remote sensing will be substantially influenced by the complexity and heterogeneity of the optical properties of water. Through a set of bio-optical and chemical measurements in July 2019 around Xidao Island, Sanya, China, we explored spatial variations of water components' concentrations (including suspended solids, phytoplankton, and dissolved organic carbon) and the optical absorptions (i.

PAHs in a sediment core covering ~120 years from Daya Bay in South China Sea were extracted using Soxhlet and high performance thin layer chromatography, and the compound-specific δC were analyzed using gas chromatography-combustion-isotopic ratio mass spectrometry. The concentrations of PAHs ranged from 99.3 to 676 ng g, with high molecular weight PAHs as a key component.

A modified approach for marine debris investigation in mangrove forests is developed, including some practical programs, viz., sampling location, time, area, materials, size and sources data processing. The marine debris method was practiced in the Beilun Estuary mangrove forest region in Fangchenggang in 2019, viz.

In order to assess the radioactive level in the terrestrial and marine organisms in Yangjiang and the adjacent areas, Sr, gross beta and gamma-emitting radionuclides (U, Ra, Th, Ra, K, Cs, Cr, Fe, Mn, Co, Co and Zn) were analyzed from 2011 to 2012. The annual effective doses were estimated in the high natural radioactive background areas in Yangjiang (HBRAYJ). The specific activities of U, Th, Ra, K and Cs in all organisms were <0.

Eighteen trace elements were analyzed in a 120-year sediment core from Daya Bay. Burial flux history and potential provenance, the relationships among trace elements, and biogenic compositions were analyzed for determining the trend and extent of trace element accumulation and identifying corresponding anthropogenic effects. Additionally, the effects of anthropogenic activities on Daya Bay were reconstructed, and a baseline/background estimation was provided for Daya Bay.

Amino acids are the material basis of almost all life activities. An improved understanding of the source, state, and cycle of amino acids is essential for determining the energy flow and material circulation of marine ecosystems. In the present study, an in situ rapid detection method of ultraviolet (UV; 266 nm) laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) technology was used to detect three natural, aromatic amino acids in the seawater.

In a Daya Bay 120-year dated sediment core(1892-2010), analyses were conducted of grain-size, water content, TOC, TIC, TC, loss on ignition, TN, BSi and TP, to reconstruct the anthropogenic activity history. The entire core was divided into four periods. Multi-parametric measurements, their ratios and interrelations are seen to clearly reflect the development of agriculture, aquaculture, industry and social economy surrounding Daya Bay.

The standard addition method (SAM) based on gravimetric sample preparation was investigated as an approach for the removal or cancelling of matrix effects in measurements by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Deduction of the equations and experimental confirmation of the method are both given in the present work. After measuring both spiked and non-spiked samples by ICP-MS, the concentration of an element could be calculated based on the signal intensity ratio to an internal standard.

To understand the impact of the Fukushima nuclear accident (FNA), Cs, Cs, Sr, and gross beta were analyzed in the northeast South China Sea (NSCS), the Luzon Strait (LS) and its adjacent areas. Cs, Sr, and gross beta values in the NSCS were similar to those prior to the FNA. Sr and Cs in the LS and its adjacent areas were consistent with those in the NSCS.

In recent decades, increasing frequency and intensity of saltwater intrusion in the Modaomen Channel has threatened the freshwater supply in the surrounding cities of the Pearl River Estuary, and ulteriorly changed the environmental conditions of the estuarine waters. Phytoplankton biomass, primary production (PP) and species composition, as well as hydrological and chemical parameters were examined along a downstream transect in the Modaomen Channel during neap tide (NT) and spring tide (ST), when a strong saltwater intrusion event occurred in late September, 2011. A total of 46 species phytoplankton were identified, including Bacillariophyta (25 species), Dinoflagellate (14 species), Chlorophyta (4 species), Cyanophyta (2 species) and Euglenozoa (1 species).

Algae are ubiquitous in the marine environment, and the ways in which they interact with bacteria are of particular interest in marine ecology field. The interactions between primary producers and bacteria impact the physiology of both partners, alter the chemistry of their environment, and shape microbial diversity. Although algal-bacterial interactions are well known and studied, information regarding the chemical-ecological role of this relationship remains limited, particularly with respect to quorum sensing (QS), which is a system of stimuli and response correlated to population density.

A two step approach was developed to estimate POC concentrations in a shallow eutrophic lake, where dissolved carbon and inorganic particulate matter strongly influence optical properties. The approach was based on the identification of a co-variability of POC concentrations with one or more inherent optical properties (IOPs). In the present case, a relationship between POC and absorption at 620 nm was identified and was combined with a reflectance based algorithm for case II waters.

A sediment core was collected and dated using (210)Pbex dating method off the waterspout of nuclear power base of Daya Bay, northeastern South China Sea. The γ-emitting radionuclides were analyzed using HPGe γ spectrometry, gross alpha and beta radioactivity as well as other geochemical indicators were deliberated to assess the impact of nuclear power plants (NPP) operation and to study the past environment changes. It suggested that NPP provided no new radioactivity source to sediment based on the low specific activity of (137)Cs.

A flow injection two steps elution method on-line sorption and preconcentration system coupled to flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was developed for the determination of trace Zn in water samples. The conventional elution procedure was divided into two steps: elution procedure and detection procedure. During the elution procedure, the eluent was pumped into KR by the suction of the peristaltic pump and through PTFE tube instead of peristaltic pump tube.
