The question of how interactions between the gut microbiome and vertebrate hosts contribute to host adaptation and speciation is one of the major problems in current evolutionary research. Using bacteriome and mycobiome metabarcoding, we examined how these two components of the gut microbiota vary with the degree of host admixture in secondary contact between two house mouse subspecies (Mus musculus musculus and M. m.

Background: The extract of myrtle plant contains polyphenolic compounds that show antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-parasitic properties. We aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of aqueous and ethanolic myrtle extract against leishmaniasis caused by L. major in vivo and in vitro conditions.

Inbreeding depression is the reduction of performance caused by mating of close relatives. In livestock populations, inbreeding depression has been traditionally estimated by regression of phenotypes on pedigree inbreeding coefficients. This estimation can be improved by utilising genomic inbreeding coefficients.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of gene polymorphisms and nongenetic factors on the somatic cell score (SCS) in the milk of Holstein (n = 148) and Simmental (n = 73) cows and their crosses (n = 6).
Methods: The SCS was calculated by the formula SCS = log2(SCC/100,000)+3, where SCC is the somatic cell count. Polymorphisms in the casein alpha S1 (CSN1S1), beta-casein (CSN2), kappa-casein (CSN3), beta-lactoglobulin (LGB), acyl-CoA diacylglycerol transferase 1 (DGAT1), leptin (LEP), fatty acid synthase (FASN), stearoyl CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1), and 1-acylglycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 6 (AGPAT6) genes were genotyped, and association analysis to the SCS in the cow's milk was performed.

The objective of this current work was to determinate the effect of high temperatures on milk production of dairy cows in southern Slovakia in the year 2015. The hypotheses that milk production is influenced by the altitude and cooling were tested. Production data included 227,500 test-day records belonging to 34 Holstein breed herds situated in lowlands, 115 to 150 m above sea level (ASL) and kept in free-stall housing.

Species richness is influenced by a nested set of environmental factors, but how do these factors interact across several scales? Our main aim is to disentangle the relative importance of environmental filters and the species pool on the richness of epiphytic bryophytes across spatial scales. To do so, we sampled epiphytic bryophytes in 43 oak forests across the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. As predictors we used climate, descriptors of forest structure and micro-environment.

Background: Atrial fibrillation is common in patients with structural heart disease who are undergoing cardiac surgery. Surgical CryoMaze has been shown to be an effective treatment in several trials, but success rates have varied considerably, between 47-95 %. The sequential hybrid approach, combining surgical CryoMaze followed by radiofrequency catheter ablation, can achieve high freedom from atrial arrhythmias, even when rigorous methods to detect arrhythmias after the procedure are used.

Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the sequential hybrid approach combining surgical CryoMaze followed by the radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation can improve freedom from atrial arrhythmias.
Methods: Thirty-five patients with persistent atrial fibrillation underwent a CryoMaze procedure in conjunction with cardiac surgery for structural heart disease. Three months after surgery, all patients underwent a 7-day electrocardiogram Holter followed by an electrophysiological study and mapping of the left and right atria.

Modified versions of the Cry3A gene of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) were transferred into Norway spruce (Picea abies). Both the biolistic approach and Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated procedure were employed for transformation of embryogenic tissue (ET) cultures. The latter method proved to be more efficient yielding 70 transgenic embryogenic tissue lines compared with 18 lines obtained by biolistics.

An ab initio investigation of the optical constants of 9-Methyl-3-Thiophen-2-YI-Thieno [3,2e] [1,2,4] Thriazolo [4,3c] Pyrimidine-8-Carboxylic Acid Ethyl Ester crystal is performed within a framework of local density approximation (LDA), and the Engel-Vosko generalized gradient approximation (EV-GGA) exchange correlation potentials. It is established that there are two independent molecules (A and B) exhibiting different intra-molecular interactions: C-H⋯O (A) and C-H⋯N (B). These intra-molecular interactions favor stabilization of the crystal structure for molecules A and B.

Background: Schistosoma reflexum (SR) is congenital syndrome briefly characterized by visceral eventration, severe dorsoflexion and ankylosis of the spine and arthrogryposis. A genetic etiology has been proposed, but conclusive evidence has not yet been provided.
Methods: Pedigree analysis was carried out in 29 cases of SR in Czech Holsteins and Holstein crosses.

A systematic ab initio study of the linear, nonlinear optical susceptibilities, and hyperpolarizability of noncentrosymmetric-monoclinic 2,4-dihydroxyl hydrazone isomorphic crystals (DHNPH) within density functional theory in the local density approximation (LDA), general gradient approximation (GGA), the Engel-Vosko generalized gradient approximation (EV-GGA) and modified Becke-Johnson potential (mBJ) has been performed. The complex dielectric susceptibility dispersion, its zero-frequency limit and the birefringence are studied. Using scissors’ corrected mBJ we find a large uniaxial dielectric anisotropy (-0.

Because noncentrosymmetric [Sb7S8Br2](AlCl4)3 single crystals possess a wide optical transparency region, it is a promising material for nonlinear optical applications. We have calculated the dispersion of linear and nonlinear optical susceptibilities including optical second harmonic generation (SHG) using a relaxed geometry. We find that the fundamental optical absorption edge situated at about 2.

We report a first-principles study of structural and phase stability in three different structures of perovskite-types KMgH(3) according to H position. While electronic and optical properties were measured only for stable perovskite-type KMgH(3), our calculated structural parameters are found in good agreement with experiment and other theoretical results. We also study the electronic charge density space distribution contours in the (200), (101), and (100) crystallographic planes, which gives better insight picture of chemical bonding between K-H, K-Mg-H, and Mg-H.

Experimental and theoretical studies of the linear and nonlinear optical susceptibilities for single crystals of potassium titanyl phosphate KTiOPO₄ are reported. The state-of-the-art full potential linear augmented plane wave method, based on the density functional theory, was applied for the theoretical investigation. The calculated direct energy band gap at Γ, using the Engel-Vosko exchange correlation functional, is found to be 3.

Starting with the X-ray diffraction data on the 3-phenylamino-4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-thione compound obtained by Wang et al. [Molecules, 2009, 14, 608], we have optimised the atomic positions by minimization of the forces acting on the atoms using a full potential linear augmented plane wave method within density-functional theory along with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) by Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof (PBE) exchange-correlation potential. In addition, for the electronic band-structure and the calculation of the gap the Engel-Vosko (EV-GGA) scheme has applied.

Osteoporosis is a systemic disease of the skeleton, characterized by reduction of bone mass and concurrent deterioration of bone structure. Consequently, bones are more fragile, and there is increased risk of fractures. The potential for acquisition of maximum bone mass is influenced by a number of factors.
