Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) plays an important role in regulation of LDL receptors on the hepatocyte surface and therefore is essential for effective removal of LDL particles from circulation. Genetic and biochemical studies have established that altered PCSK9 functionality influences both LDL cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk. This has prompted development of inhibitory strategies targeting PCSK9.
