Technical considerations for isolated limb perfusion: A consensus paper.

Eur J Surg Oncol

June 2024

Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research, Department of Surgery, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Background: Isolated limb perfusion (ILP) is a well-established surgical procedure for the administration of high dose chemotherapy to a limb for the treatment of advanced extremity malignancy. Although the technique of ILP was first described over 60 years ago, ILP is utilised in relatively few specialist centres, co-located with tertiary or quaternary cancer centres. The combination of high dose cytotoxic chemotherapy and the cytokine tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), mandates leakage monitoring to prevent potentially serious systemic toxicity.

Sonographic Characteristics of Leiomyomatous Tumors of Skin and Nail: a Case Series.

Dermatol Pract Concept

July 2022

Department of Dermatology, Facultad de Medicina, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

Introduction: The clinical appearance of the uncommon cutaneous leiomyomatous tumors (LMT) is nonspecific, leading to an extensive differential diagnosis. A non-invasive tool such as high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) is required for characterizing LMTs in the clinical setting. Although the sonographic features of their uterine counterpart had been well reported, there are only scant reports on the use of ultrasound for studying leiomyomatous neoplasms of the skin and nail.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reports zero early relapses (before 30 months) in 24 patients with isolated limb Ewing sarcoma treated using an intensified protocol called SCMCIE94.
  • The treatment included chemotherapy, radiation, and limb salvage surgery, showing promising long-term survival rates for patients with localized disease.
  • The findings suggest that the success in preventing early relapse is likely due to the specific changes in the SCMCIE94 protocol, despite the small sample size, and highlight the need for further strategies for managing late relapses.
