The use of marginal grafts is very challenging and is associated with post-reperfusion syndrome and early allograft dysfunction. The outcomes of machine perfusion for the preservation of marginal grafts have been compared with that of static cold storage, with studies reporting a reduced risk of ischemic cholangiopathy and graft loss. We performed this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing outcomes of machine perfusion of liver grafts to static cold storage (SCS) of liver grafts during liver transplantation.

Beer-Sheva Mental Health Center, Ministry of Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva, Israel.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is often a precursor of dementia, and in particular of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) which is the most common cause of dementia. Individuals with amnestic MCI are several-fold more likely to develop AD than the general population. Therefore, MCI comprises a well-detectable, early stage time-point for therapeutic intervention and strategic prevention.

Augmenting prehospital care.

BMJ Mil Health

June 2021

Medical Corps, Israel Defense Forces, Ramat-Gan, Israel

Introduction: The challenging environment of prehospital casualty care demands providers to make prompt decisions and to engage in lifesaving interventions, occasionally without them being adequately experienced. Telementoring based on augmented reality (AR) devices has the potential to decrease the decision time and minimise the distance gap between an experienced consultant and the first responder. The purpose of this study was to determine whether telementoring with AR glasses would affect chest thoracotomy performance and self-confidence of inexperienced trainees.

Background: Serum vitamin D level is commonly low in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Although there is a growing body of evidence that links low vitamin D level to certain aspects of IBD such as disease activity and quality of life, data on its prevalence and how it varies across disease phenotype, smoking status and treatment groups are still missing.

Materials And Methods: Patients diagnosed with IBD between 2010 and 2011 were recruited.

The complex interactions and overlapping symptoms of comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) induced by an explosive blast wave have become a focus of attention in recent years, making clinical distinction and effective intervention difficult. Because dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is thought to underlie trauma-related (psycho)pathology, we evaluated both the endogenous corticosterone response and the efficacy of exogenous hydrocortisone treatment provided shortly after blast exposure. We employed a controlled experimental blast-wave paradigm in which unanesthetized animals were exposed to visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile effects of an explosive blast wave produced by exploding a thin copper wire.

The impact of the blood glucose levels of non-diabetic critically ill patients on their clinical outcome.

Anaesthesiol Intensive Ther

October 2019

Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, General Intensive Care Unit, Soroka Medical Centre, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva, Israel, Israel.

Background: Stress hyperglycaemia is thought to result from a hormonal response (release of catecholamines, glucocorticoids, glucagon, etc.) following stress, sepsis or trauma. Although stress hyperglycaemia is a very common finding in critically ill populations, there are many non-diabetic critically ill patients who do not develop a hyperglycaemic stress response to trauma or acute illness.

The wake-promoting drug modafinil stimulates specific hypothalamic circuits to promote adaptive stress responses in an animal model of PTSD.

Transl Psychiatry

October 2016

Anxiety and Stress Research Unit, Beer-Sheva Mental Health Center, Ministry of Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel.

Pharmacotherapeutic intervention during traumatic memory consolidation has been suggested to alleviate or even prevent the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We recently reported that, in a controlled, prospective animal model, depriving rats of sleep following stress exposure prevents the development of a PTSD-like phenotype. Here, we report that administering the wake-promoting drug modafinil to rats in the aftermath of a stressogenic experience has a similar prophylactic effect, as it significantly reduces the prevalence of PTSD-like phenotype.

Essential role of carbonic anhydrase XII in secretory gland fluid and HCO3 (-) secretion revealed by disease causing human mutation.

J Physiol

December 2015

Epithelial Signalling and Transport Section, Molecular Physiology and Therapeutics Branch, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, 20892, USA.

Key Points: Fluid and HCO3 (-) secretion is essential for all epithelia; aberrant secretion is associated with several diseases. Carbonic anhydrase XII (CA12) is the key carbonic anhydrase in epithelial fluid and HCO3 (-) secretion and works by activating the ductal Cl(-) -HCO3 (-) exchanger AE2. Delivery of CA12 to salivary glands increases salivation in mice and of the human mutation CA12(E143K) markedly inhibits it.
