Group II-VI semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) with atomically defined thicknesses and extended atomically flat (001) facets are used for ligand binding and chiro-optical effects. In this study, we demonstrate that tartrate ligands, anchored by two carboxylate groups, chelate the (001) facets of NPLs at an average ratio of one tartrate molecule to two cadmium (Cd) surface atoms. This assembly of chiral molecules on inorganic nanocrystals generates a circular dichroism -factor as high as 1.

Shock is a life-threatening condition. This study evaluated if sublingual microcirculatory perfusion on admission is associated with 30-day mortality in older intensive care unit (ICU) shock patients. This trial prospectively recruited ICU patients (≥ 80 years old) with arterial lactate above 2 mmol/L, requiring vasopressors despite adequate fluid resuscitation, regardless of shock cause.

Low-latitude (LL) oceans account for up to half of global net primary production and export. It has been argued that the Southern Ocean dominates LL primary production and export, with implications for the response of global primary production and export to climate change. Here we applied observational analyses and sensitivity studies to an individual model to show, instead, that 72% of LL primary production and 55% of export is controlled by local mesopelagic macronutrient cycling.

Concentric lateral CdSe/CdTe/CdSe heterostructures show bicolor photoluminescence from both a red charge transfer band of the CdSe/CdTe interface and a green fluorescence from CdSe. This work uses visible and near-infrared transient spectroscopy measurements to demonstrate that the deviation from Kasha's rule arises from a hole relaxation bottleneck from CdSe to CdTe. Hole transfer can take up to 1 ns, which permits radiative relaxation of excitons remaining in CdSe.

Leriglitazone halts disease progression in adult patients with early cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy.

Cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (CALD) is an X-linked rapidly progressive demyelinating disease leading to death usually within a few years. The standard of care is haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), but many men are not eligible due to age, absence of a matched donor or lesions of the corticospinal tracts (CST). Based on the ADVANCE study showing that leriglitazone decreases the occurrence of CALD, we treated 13 adult CALD patients (19-67 years of age) either not eligible for HSCT (n = 8) or awaiting HSCT (n = 5).

For air quality management, while numerical tools are mainly evaluated to assess their performances on absolute concentrations, this study assesses the impact of their settings on the robustness of model responses to emission reduction strategies for the main criteria pollutants. The effect of the spatial resolution and chemistry schemes is investigated. We show that whereas the spatial resolution is not a crucial setting (except for NO), the chemistry scheme has more impact, particularly when assessing hourly values of the absolute potential of concentrations.

We introduce here a general model of Functional Neurological Disorders based on the following hypothesis: a Functional Neurological Disorder could correspond to a consciously initiated voluntary top-down process causing involuntary lasting consequences that are consciously experienced and subjectively interpreted by the patient as involuntary. We develop this central hypothesis according to Global Neuronal Workspace theory of consciousness, that is particularly suited to describe interactions between conscious and non-conscious cognitive processes. We then present a list of predictions defining a research program aimed at empirically testing their validity.

In recent years, the analysis of circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) containing tumor-derived DNA has emerged as a noninvasive means for cancer monitoring and personalized medicine. However, the isolation of cfDNA from peripheral blood has remained a challenge due to the low abundance and high fragmentation of these molecules. While the rocking is controlled with a step motor, the microfluidic device is made of two plastic plates, allowing plugging directly syringe tubes with Luer connectors.

Piezoelectric and microfluidic tuning of an infrared cavity for vibrational polariton studies.

We developed a microfluidic system for vibrational polariton studies, which consists of two microfluidic chips: one for solution mixing and another for tuning an infrared cavity made of a pair of gold mirrors and a PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) spacer. We show that the cavity of the system can be accurately tuned with either piezoelectric actuators or microflow-induced pressure to result in resonant coupling between a cavity mode and a variational mode of the solution molecules. Acrylonitrile solutions were chosen to prove the concept of vabriational strong coupling (VSC) of a CN stretching mode with light inside the cavity.

Objective: According to a seminal hypothesis stated by Crick and Koch in 1995, one is not aware of neural activity in primary visual cortex (V1) because this region lacks reciprocal connections with prefrontal cortex (PFC).

Methods: We provide here a neuropsychological illustration of this hypothesis in a patient with a very rare form of cortical blindness: ventral and dorsal cortical pathways were lesioned bilaterally while V1 areas were partially preserved.

Results: Visual stimuli escaped conscious perception but still activated V1 regions that were functionally disconnected from PFC.
