: Pain is the most common symptom of osteoarthritis (OA), and it leads to functional decline, such as decreased mobility and limitations in activities of daily living, which leads to difficulties in social participation, increased social isolation, and economic burden. Muscle weakness can be a cause of OA symptoms. The purpose was to analyze the effects of resistance training on improving pain, strength, and function in OA and to analyze the effects by intervention duration and joint.

Article Synopsis
  • Respiratory and periodontal diseases are common globally, and periodontal disease may increase the risk of respiratory issues like aspiration pneumonia, but the evidence linking them is unclear.
  • This study analyzed data from the 2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, focusing on adults who had oral and lung function tests, ultimately including 2,988 participants.
  • Results showed that adults without chewing discomfort had a lower risk of restrictive ventilation disorder, suggesting that chewing discomfort is linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and highlights the need for further research on this relationship.

Background: The harmful effects of particulate matter (PM) are amplified in older adults, who experience a decline in physiological function, reducing their ability to expel and detoxify inhaled PM. Moreover, older adults may be more vulnerable to fine particulate toxicity due to underlying medical conditions. We assessed the effects of long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM) on depressive mood (DM) in adults aged > 65 yr using community-based data.

The mechanical properties of alkali-activated slag fiber composites (ASFC) were investigated with varying volume fractions of PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) fibers. Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and alkali-activators were used as the main binders instead of cement, which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide during the manufacturing process. The measured slump flow of ASFC showed a high fluidity at a fiber content of 1.

During concrete construction in winter, the concrete performance is generally improved by adding a chemical admixture or providing protection using tents and hot-air blowers. However, long-term strength or safety accidents may occur due to the installation and removal of the tents. This study considered insulated gang forms to improve formwork methods.

Effect of a Nitrite/Nitrate-Based Accelerator on the Strength Development and Hydrate Formation in Cold-Weather Cementitious Materials.

Materials (Basel)

February 2021

Basic Chemicals Department Chemicals Division, Nissan Chemical Corporation, Tokyo 103-6119, Japan.

Recently, there has been increased use of calcium-nitrite and calcium-nitrate as the main components of chloride- and alkali-free anti-freezing agents to promote concrete hydration in cold weather concreting. As the amount of nitrite/nitrate-based accelerators increases, the hydration of tricalcium aluminate (CA phase) and tricalcium silicate (CS phase) in cement is accelerated, thereby improving the early strength of cement and effectively preventing initial frost damage. Nitrite/nitrate-based accelerators are used in larger amounts than usual in low temperature areas below -10 °C.

Alveolar bone is both morphologically and functionally different from other bones of the axial or peripheral skeleton. Because of its sensitive nature to external stimuli including mechanical stress, bone loss stimuli, and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, alveolar bone rendering is seen as an important factor in various dental surgical processes. Although multiple studies have validated the response of long bone to various factors, how alveolar bone responds to functional stimuli still needs further clarification.

Neural Regen Res

February 2020

Department of Pharmacy, College of Pharmacy; Research Center for Bioresource and Health, College of Pharmacy, Chungbuk National University, Cheongju, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Gynostemma pentaphyllum contains bioactive gypenosides that show potential in protecting dopaminergic neurons from cell death in animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD).
  • Oral administration of an ethanol extract from G. pentaphyllum (GP-EX) improved neurological function and reduced harmful effects of α-synuclein overexpression in transgenic mouse models designed to study PD.
  • The study suggests that GP-EX could be a promising treatment for neuronal degeneration associated with PD, and further research is warranted to confirm its efficacy.

For many years, scientists have been aware of the importance of terahertz waves (T-rays), which have now emerged as an NDE (nondestructive evaluation) technique for certain ranges of the electronic spectrum. The present study deals with T-ray scanning techniques of honeycomb sandwich composite panels with a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) skin as well as the refractive index (), and the electrical conductivity () of glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites. For this experiment, the degree of penetration to FRP composites is investigated for the THz transmitted power based on the angle in the electric field (E-field) direction vs.

This study investigated the effects of ethanol extract from Gynostemma pentaphyllum (GP-EX) on memory deficits in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-lesioned mouse model of Parkinson's disease (PD) (MPTP-lesioned mice). MPTP (30 mg/kg/day, 5 days)-lesioned mice showed deficits of habit learning memory and spatial memory, which were further aggravated by treatment with L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) (25 mg/kg, 21 days). However, treatment with GP-EX (50 mg/kg, 21 days) ameliorated memory deficits in MPTP-lesioned mice treated with L-DOPA (25 mg/kg): GP-EX prevented the decreases in retention latency time in the passive avoidance test and tyrosine hydroxylase-immunopositive cells and dopamine levels in the nigrostriatum.
