Department of Radiology, Tri-Service General Hospital, National Defense Medical Center, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC.

Neurolymphomatosis (NL) is a rare condition caused by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or leukemia. We present a case of NL and describe ultrasound features, including the "fried egg sign" in which there is a clear demarcation between an avascular echogenic core and a hypoechoic vascularized peripheral zone that may help to distinguish NL from primary nerve sheath tumors.

The Cardiff anomalous perceptions scale (CAPS) has been recently designed for the assessment of anomalous perceptual experiences in the general population, and includes dimensions that measure distress, intrusiveness, and frequency. The purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of a Taiwanese version of the CAPS. The English version of the CAPS was translated into Taiwanese (CAPS-T) and the latter was applied to this study.

Background: The Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS) was designed for the assessment of the cognitive processes involved in self-reflection and the ability to modify erroneous beliefs and misinterpretations. Studies investigating the factor structure of the BCIS have indicated a two-factor model in the psychotic population. The factor structure of the BCIS, however, has not received much consideration in the nonpsychiatric population.

April 2012

Department of Psychiatry, Songshan Armed Forces General Hospital, No. 131, Jiankang RD., Songshan District, Taipei 10581, Taiwan, Republic of China.

Purpose: This paper describes the development of a Taiwanese version of the Illness Concept Scale (ICS) and assesses the psychometric properties of this instrument. The ICS is one of the few tools available to measure a global level of illness concepts or health beliefs and has been widely used in a range of clinical and research settings. The ICS has already been translated into several languages, but there is no validated Taiwanese version.

Background: Using the theoretical framework of quality of life (QOL), many studies have demonstrated that the beliefs individuals hold about their QOL are important in predicting health outcomes. This study tested the Taiwanese version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief (WHOQOL-BREF) assessment in schizophrenia patients. The WHOQOL-BREF is a cross-cultural and widely used measure for assessing health-related QOL.

Background: Personal beliefs about medication compliance have been reliably associated with emotional and behavioral response to mental health problems and health outcomes. This notion has been extensively explored in relation to mental illness. In the current study, a questionnaire designed to assess beliefs about medication compliance (the medication adherence rating scale [MARS]) was translated into Taiwanese to explore beliefs about compliance in schizophrenic patients.

Background: Over the last few decades, research concerning the insight of patients with schizophrenia and its relationships with other clinical variables has been given much attention in the clinical setting. Since that time, a series of instruments assessing insight have been developed. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Taiwanese version of the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS).

Over the last decade, several self-report instruments to assess insight of illness from schizophrenic patients' perspectives have been administered. The main purpose of this study was to ascertain the reliability and validity of the Taiwanese version of the Self-Appraisal of Illness Questionnaire (SAIQ) in a chronic schizophrenic sample in Taiwan. This scale is a self-administered instrument designed to evaluate attitudes toward mental illness among patients receiving treatment.

Aim And Objective: The aim of the study was to analyse, while controlling for identified covariates, the effects of morningness-eveningness on sleep quality for shift nurses.

Background: Shift nurses had greater difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, thus resulting in higher rates of retiring from hospital. Existing research has addressed the effects of manpower demand and personal preferences on shift assignment; however, the concept of endogenous rhythms is rarely considered.

This study sets out to investigate the preferences of the elderly in northern Taiwan with regard to various types of long-term care services. Taking into consideration sociodemographics, health condition, and access to such medical care services, our study examined both economic and family factors in an attempt to gain an understanding of the knowledge of and attitudes toward, the various types of long-term care among the elderly. An interview survey was carried out by local public health nurses among a sample of 562 elderly Taiwanese residents (people aged 65 years or older) from 7 counties/cities in northern Taiwan, all of whom had been selected by means of multistage sampling.

A 32-year-old female patient visited the emergency room because of sudden onset of abdominal pain, which was found to be induced by hemorrhagic infarction of a plexiform neurofibroma arising from the lesser omentum. No other classic clinical characteristics of systemic von Recklinghausen's disease had been seen up until now. The tumor, classified as sporadic plexiform neurofibroma, rarely occurs in the digestive tract.

Exploration into the variance in self-reported health-related quality of life between the chronically-ill elderly and their family caregivers.

J Nurs Res

September 2007

Department of Nursing, Songshan Armed Forces General Hospital, and School of Nursing, National Defense Medical Center, Institute of Medical Sciences, Tzu Chi University, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how differences in perspectives on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) between elderly individuals with chronic conditions and their family caregivers influence long-term care preferences.
  • Researchers conducted interviews with 267 matched pairs of elderly individuals and caregivers using a tailored version of the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire to assess HRQOL.
  • Results revealed that caregivers rated HRQOL significantly higher in all domains, and factors like gender, activities of daily living (ADLs), marital status, and presence of a caregiver were key predictors of these differences, offering insights for improving care arrangements for the elderly.
