Coincidental detection of T-cell rich B-cell lymphoma in the paraaortic lymph nodes of a woman undergoing lymph node dissection for cervical cancer.

Int J Gynecol Cancer

March 2004

Division of Medical Oncology, Departments of Internal Medicine and Pathology, Hacettepe University Medical School, Department of Gynecological Oncology, Social Security Hospital, Ankara Turkey.

The diagnosis of cervical squamous cell carcinoma with concurrent T-cell rich B-cell lymphoma in dissected lymph nodes has not been reported to our knowledge. We report such a case. The biopsy of an exophytic lesion at the uterine cervix showed squamous cell carcinoma in a 50-year-old woman presenting with postcoital bleeding.

The conventional procedure in the treatment of vertebral tuberculosis is drainage of the abscess, curettage of the devitalized vertebra and application of an antituberculous chemotherapy regimen. Posterior instrumentation results are encouraging in the prevention or treatment of late kyphosis; however, a second-stage operation is needed. Recently, posterolateral or transpedicular drainage without anterior drainage or posterior instrumentation following anterior drainage in the same session has become the preferred treatment, in order that kyphotic deformity can be avoided.

Frequency of mtDNA A1555G and A7445G mutations among children with prelingual deafness in Turkey.

Eur J Pediatr

March 2003

Division of Pediatric Molecular Pathology and Genetics, Ankara University School of Medicine, Dikimevi, 06100, Ankara, Turkey.

Unlabelled: Considerable differences on the frequencies of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA A1555G and tRNA(Ser(UCN)) A7445G mutations have been reported in different populations. Our screening of 168 patients coming from independent Turkish families with prelingual sensorineural non-syndromic deafness revealed three deaf children with A1555G (1.8%) but no examples of A7445G.

The effect of short-term antifibrinolytic therapy on experimental vasospasm.

Surg Neurol

January 2003

Department of Neurosurgery, Okmeydani Social Security Hospital, Halaskargazi Cad. No: 368/21 Sisli, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: Antifibrinolytic therapy is effective in preventing rebleeding in cases of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The major disadvantage of this therapy is the increase in ischemic complications, which is supposed to be due to cerebral vasospasm. In this study the effect of short-term antifibrinolytic therapy on arterial vessel narrowing after SAH was investigated utilizing the rat femoral artery vasospasm model.

Background/purpose: Anal fissures would result in constipation in children, worsening the clinical picture, thus, justifying a fast response therapy. In this randomized, prospective, placebo-controlled study, it was aimed to determine the response rates to fissure treatment by lidocaine, EMLA and GTN on the 10th day and after 8 weeks of therapy. Related childhood literature is scarce, and EMLA is tried for the first time in fissure treatment.

High resolution CT (HRCT; 1-2 mm collimation scans reconstructed with a high spatial frequency algorithm) is an established technique for the evaluation of diffuse infiltrative lung diseases. For many of these diseases, the features shown on HRCT correlate well with the histopathological abnormalities. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to illustrate HRCT appearances in various diffuse infiltrative lung diseases.

As scoliotic curve is a rotational deformity, derotation maneuvre was used as the corrective factor, but recent studies demonstrated spinal imbalance and decompensation problems in patients treated with this method. This study evaluates 217 late onset idiopathic scoliosis patients surgically treated with third generation instrumentation (Texas Scotish Rite Hospital System - TSRH) from September 1991 to November 1996 with a minimum 2 years follow up. Preoperative and postoperative Cobb angles in the frontal plane and thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis angles in the sagittal plane are measured.

(51)CrEDTA colonic permeability and therapy response in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Nucl Med Commun

September 2001

Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, Social Security Hospital, University of Gazi, Ankara, Turkey.

Orally administered (51)Cr-labelled ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid ((51)CrEDTA) has been used to evaluate intestinal permeability in inflammatory bowel disease, especially Crohn's disease. However, information about colonic permeability in ulcerative colitis (UC) is relatively scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the urinary excretion of orally administered (51)CrEDTA, its relation to disease activity and its response to medical therapy in patients with UC.

Isola spinal instrumentation system for idiopathic scoliosis.

Arch Orthop Trauma Surg

March 2001

1st Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Ankara Social Security Hospital, Turkey.

Since the definition of three-dimensional components of the scoliotic deformity, there have been important improvements in the surgical treatment of the problem. A derotation maneuver was proposed as a treatment option with CD instrumentation, but the reports of imbalance and decompensation with this system repopularized sublaminar wiring and translation as a corrective maneuver. Isola spinal instrumentation is one of the modern systems that utilizes vertebral translation instead of rod rotation.

Anterior instrumentation for the correction of scoliotic curves has recently been gaining in popularity. The problems of high mortality and morbidity that were associated with the employment of anterior instrumentation in the first years it was used have now been overcome. Efforts are now being concentrated on increasing the correction rates in the frontal plane and decreasing the kyphotic effect in the sagittal plane.

Background: Cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has remained a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with SAH. Excitatory neurotransmitters are gathered in the extracellular space during ischemia due to cerebral vasospasm and initiate or stimulate a series of pathophysiological biochemical processes which consequently lead to neuronal death. Tizanidine (Sandoz compound DS 103-282, 5-chloro-4,2 (2-imidazolin-2-yl-amino)-2,1,3-benzothiazol hydrochloride) is a centrally-acting muscle relaxant and a selective alpha 2 adrenoreceptor agonist which shows its effect by stimulating presynaptic alpha 2 adrenoreceptors in central ASPergic and GLUergic system by inhibiting aspartic acid and glutamic acid release.

The results of intraoperative autotransfusion in orthopaedic surgery.

Bull Hosp Jt Dis

March 2000

1st Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Ankara Social Security Hospital, Turkey.

Perioperative hemorrhage associated with major orthopaedic surgery can become life threatening. Homologous bank blood transfusion can replace the volume of blood lost but it has serious disadvantages such as the transmission of viral agents, it has an insufficient platelet count, and transfusion reactions are possible. Hypotensive anesthesia, predeposited autologous blood transfusion and intraoperative autotransfusion are used to reduce these disadvantages.

Objectives: Etiologic hypotheses in acute idiopathic peripheral facial palsy (AIPFP) mostly point to an immunologic dysfunction, probably virus-induced. Though various immunologic abnormalities are reported, the problem is still unsolved. We investigated intrathecal immunoglobulin synthesis in AIPFP as a clue for central nervous system (CNS) immunopathology.
