Ovarian cancer ranks among the most severe forms of cancer affecting the female reproductive organs, posing a significant clinical challenge primarily due to the development of resistance to conventional therapies. This study investigated the effects of the chalcone derivative 1C on sensitive (A2780) and cisplatin-resistant (A2780cis) ovarian cancer cell lines. Our findings revealed that 1C suppressed cell viability, induced cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase, and triggered apoptosis in both cell lines.

The dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) is one of the most popular miniaturized extraction procedures. In this paper, the degree of dispersion and dispersion stability were studied with the aim to assess the correlations of these parameters with efficiency for the selected analytical application. The dependence between the degree of dispersion (cloudy state quality) and its stability obtained by various emulsification procedures, such as solvent-assisted emulsification (using various dispersive solvents) and mechanical emulsification (using auxiliary energies), is investigated and discussed.

DNA topoisomerases regulate conformational changes in DNA topology during normal cell growth, such as replication, transcription, recombination, and repair, and may be targeted for anticancer drugs. A DNA topology assay was used to investigate DNA-damaging/protective activities of extracts from Habanero Red (HR), Habanero Maya Red (HMR), Trinidad Moruga Scorpion (TMS), Jalapeno (J), Serrano pepper (SP), Habanero Red Savina (HRS), Bhut Jolokia (BJ), and Jamaica Rosso (JR) peppers, demonstrating their inhibitory effect on the relaxation of pBR by Topo I. DNA topoisomerase II (Topo II) is proven therapeutic target of anticancer drugs.

Background: The effect of early as compared with later initiation of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in persons with atrial fibrillation who have had an acute ischemic stroke is unclear.
Methods: We performed an investigator-initiated, open-label trial at 103 sites in 15 countries. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to early anticoagulation (within 48 hours after a minor or moderate stroke or on day 6 or 7 after a major stroke) or later anticoagulation (day 3 or 4 after a minor stroke, day 6 or 7 after a moderate stroke, or day 12, 13, or 14 after a major stroke).

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of repeated Finnish sauna baths on the concentrations of nitric oxide metabolites (NO) and 3-nitrotyrosine in relation to pro-oxidative and antioxidative status in young males with different physical activity levels.
Material And Methods: The study was performed on healthy males (aged 20-25 years), representing the training (T, N = 10) and non-training groups (NT, N = 10). The protocol included a series of 10 sauna baths during 3 weeks.

Higher plants often accumulate secondary metabolites in multicellular structures or in secretory reservoirs. Biotechnological production of such compounds by cell cultures lacking proper morphological structures is difficult, therefore possibilities for an efficient increase of their formation by organ cultures are being searched. The genus Hypericum comprises many species that store photoactive and phototoxic naphthodianthrones in the dark nodules on their above-ground parts.

Our previous results have shown that the combination of hypericin-mediated photodynamic therapy (HY-PDT) at sub-optimal dose with hyperforin (HP) (compounds of Hypericum sp.), or its stable derivative aristoforin (AR) stimulates generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to antitumour activity. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) represents a rapidly developing alternative treatment for various types of cancers. Although considered highly effective, cancer cells can exploit various mechanisms, including the upregulation of apoptosis inhibitors, to overcome the cytotoxic effect of PDT. Survivin, a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein family, is known to play a critical role in cancer progression and therapeutic resistance and therefore represents a potential therapeutic target.

Purpose: To evaluate the association of serum levels of N(ε)- Carboxy methyl lysine (N(ε)-CML), an advanced glycation end product with topographic alterations in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in diabetic retinopathy on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
Method: Consecutive cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus with no retinopathy (n=20); non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (n=20); proliferative diabetic retinopathy (n=20) and healthy controls (n=20) between the ages of 40 and 65years were included. RPE alterations were graded on segmentation map of SD-OCT: grade 0, No RPE alterations; grade 1, RPE alterations in up to two quadrants and grade 2, RPE alterations in more than two quadrants.
