Background: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has been recognized as a major health concern worldwide, given its increasing prevalence, difficulties in diagnosis and treatment, and impact on health, economy, and society. Clinical guidelines highlight the need of biomarkers to guide OSA clinical decision-making, but so far, without success. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews database (ID CRD42020132556), we proposed to gather and further explore candidates identified in the literature as potential OSA biomarkers.

Introduction: This study aimed to compare the results of a conservative method and the Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure for weight loss on the cognitive-emotional performance of severely obese women assessed for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome.

Leukoencephalopathy with cerebral calcifications and cysts (LCC) is a neurological disorder characterized by the radiological triad of white matter abnormalities, intracranial calcifications and cystic lesions variable in size resulting from a diffuse cerebral microangiopathy. Typically, progressive focal neurological deficits and seizures are the first clinical manifestation, but the severity of symptoms can vary according to the size and location of the cystic lesions holding compressive effects on the surrounding brain tissue. The most common histopathological finding is diffuse microangiopathy, which might be associated to pathogenic mutations in SNORD118 gene causing Labrune syndrome.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly frequent sleep disorder in the middle-aged and older population, and it has been associated with an increased risk of developing cognitive decline and dementia, including mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). In more recent years, a growing number of studies have focused on: 1) the presence of OSA in patients with MCI or AD, 2) the link between OSA and markers of AD pathology, and 3) the role of OSA in accelerating cognitive deterioration in patients with MCI or AD. Moreover, some studies have also assessed the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on the cognitive trajectory in MCI and AD patients with comorbid OSA.

Nightshift work can cause daytime somnolence and decreased alertness, and can increase risk of medical errors, occupational injuries and car accidents. We used a structured questionnaire, including the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), to assess the prevalence and the determinants of sleep disruption in 268 Italian University hospital physicians from Cagliari (N = 57), Milan (N = 180) and Pisa (N = 31), who participated in the multicentre study on the prevalence of sleep disturbance among hospital physicians (PRESOMO); 198 of them (74%) were engaged in nightshift work. We explored the association between history of nightshift work and poor sleep quality and daytime somnolence with multivariate logistic regression, adjusting by personal and lifestyle covariates.
