The study was conducted on 56 rabbits, of White New Zealand breed, male gender. The average weight of the rabbits was 3 kg. The diabetes was evoked by intravenous injection of 10% alloxan, using the single dose of 100 mg/kg.

Effect of lamotrigine combined with felbamate on the horizontal (ambulatory) activity in mice.

Exploratory and spontaneous locomotor activities, after administration of some novel antiepileptic drugs (felbamate and lamotrigine alone or in combination), were evaluated in mice by means of the electronically monitored locomotor activity system (Digiscan analyzer). Felbamate (injected intraperitoneally, at the single dose of 25.7 mg/kg) significantly reduced behavioral activity in terms of horizontal (ambulatory) activity in mice.

Recommendations on health promotion trends in inhabitants of rural areas on the basis of studies on traumatology.

It results from epidemiological studies that accidents and traumas are one of more important medical and social problems in our country. These issues are complex as they are related not only to the need of treatment, rehabilitation and social guarantees of the injured, but also with problems of health promotion and prophylactics. As the etiology of accidents and traumas is often complex, it is indispensable to establish cooperation of specialists of many scientific disciplines such as medicine, pedagogy, sociology and psychology, statistics, economy, and law.

The analysis of the causative factors and types of traumas in disabled inhabitants of rural areas in Poland.

Traumas, accidents and intoxications are one of the main medical as well as social problems of the end of the previous and the present century. The number of accidents in the rural areas has been rising for the past 20 years. Little or lack of knowledge on protection of the own health against traumas, accidents and intoxications, as well as incidents such as electrocution or drowning, is a considerable problem.

Evaluation of motor efficiency with respect to self-care of neurological patients.

Based on the data obtained from the individual measurements, progress was noted in locomotor and self-service activities. In the experimental group, patients who were immobilized during the initial stage of the study, regained independence to a considerable extent to the end of the study--more so in Group E (experimental), compared to Group K (control). Inflammatory and neoplastic tumors of the pancreas still remain a diagnostic dilemma for a surgeon mainly due to subtle differences between these two sorts of tumors. Prosthetic rehabilitation of edentulous patients with cleft palate.

In this work a description of prosthetic treatment of the edentulous patient with cleft palate was showed. Although positive results of surgical treatment diminish the number of these patients, more than once a dentist has to treat effectively patients in their fifties, sixties and seventies whose cleft palate was not treated with modern methods. Authors describe prosthetic solution which enables removing part of acryl from prosthesis and making air chambers.

We present the patient with pendular nystagmus. The condition is secondary to long-term work as an underground coal miner. The issue is worth describing because of its rare presence in contemporary either neurological or ophthalmological literature.

Neurological manifestation of CMV disease after allogeneic haematopoietic stem cells transplantation--a case report.

A 4-year-old girl who underwent allo HSCT from unrelated donor and developed neurological CMV disease in early postransplant period was described. She had clinical symptoms of radiculitis confirmed with spinal MRI scans with concomitant detection of CMV in CNS by PCR. Several risk factors for CMV disease in the presented case were discussed.

Outcome of children with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, based on original material.

Idiopathic or immune thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) is a common hematologic disease in children. ITP is subdivided in an acute and chronic form based solely on the duration of thrombocytopenia. The aim of the study was to analyse the course of disease and outcome of children with acute and chronic ITP.

The radiologic diagnosis of invasive fungal infections in neutropenic children.

Fungal infections have substantially increased in incidence over the past two decades, especially among patients with cancer who have received high doses of chemotherapy. Diagnosis is based on clinical observations, radiological and laboratory methods and molecular biological techniques. Early diagnosis is important and increases overall response rates, so high-risk patients should be treated empirically, based on the clinical picture and radiologic findings alone.

The use of recombinant human erythropoietin in the treatment of anaemia of prematurity.

The main aim of this study was to examine the incidence of enamelopathies among children from the Bogdanka region. Altogether, there were examined 273 people (aged 7-14) who live in the neigbourhood of the mainfield (group I). The controlled group consisted of 188 children of the same age who lived in the areas free of chemical pollution (group II).

The outcome of implementation of a dental prophylactics programme among eleven-year-old children from the Lublin region.

The aim of this study was evaluation of effectiveness of a professional carious disease prevention programme implemented in the Lublin region for a group of 11-year-old children at high risk of caries. On the basis of clinical dental examination a group of children at high risk of caries was selected (yearly increase in the number of new active caries foci of 4 and more--mean D value of 5.66), in whom therapeutic and prophylactic procedures comprising the caries prevention programme were performed.

The influence of chosen metals administration in drinking water on magnesium balance in rats.

The aim of our study was to estimate the influence of chromium, lead and aluminium on the magnesium level in serum and tissues of rats. Male Wistar rats received Cr, Pb and Al at the concentration of 500 mg of metal x dm(-3) in the form of drinking water for three or six weeks. After the period of administration the animals were sacrificed under ketamine narcosis and blood from the heart as well as the tissues of the liver, kidney, brain, spleen, femoral muscle and heart muscle were collected.

The effect of lithium administration in a diet on the chosen parameters of the antioxidant barrier in rats.

The influence of sex hormones and vitamin E on ascorbic acid concentration in rat tissues.

Ascorbic acid concentration in a living body undergoes alterations continually. The changes in homeostasis of this important antioxidant may be induced by the effect of sex hormones for example. Based on this, the aim of our work was to estimate the influence of sex hormones administration and vitamin E supplementation on tissue ascorbic acid concentration in female and male rats.

Morphological changes in adrenal cortex--the final effect of angiotensin II receptor antagonists.

The influence of losartan, angiotensin receptor on the histological image of the adrenal glomerular layer of white rats was revealed. The drug was administered in the therapeutic and ten times higher dose. It was manifested by the decrease of glandular cells and prevalence of blastic cells of the cortex.

The influence of environmental factors and education on tobacco smoking among students of the Faculty of Nursing, Medical University of Lublin.

Tobacco smoking among medical personnel is a problem concerning not only our country. Nurses and midwives in their work have a close contact with patients allowing influence on their health behaviours. Positive own example is indispensable in this field.

Ultrasonographic patterns of iatrogenic foreign bodies in the in vitro study.

The purpose of the study was application of ultrasonography for description of imaging patterns of iatrogenic foreign bodies in an in vitro model. Examples of radiolucent and poorly radiopaque foreign bodies were embedded in containers filled with gelatine The ultrasound scanning was performed by means of ATL HDI 3500 machine with a high-frequency broadband linear transducer. There was determined the possibility of detection of various types of foreign bodies.

Magnesium concentration in rat tissues receiving sex hormones and vitamin E.

Magnesium plays very important metabolic and regulatory roles in the animal organism. On this element tissues' concentration may have an influence other factors, such as sex hormones and vitamin E. The aim of our paper was to determine the influence of various testosterone doses given to male rats and various estradiol doses given to female rats on tissue magnesium concentration.

Magnesium role in cardiovascular diseases.

Magnesium is one of the four major cations in the human body and the second most abundant within the cell. Observational studies have shown the fundamental role of magnesium in treatment of different cardiovascular disorders, connected with magnesium deficiency. As co-factor of many enzymes, especially those involved in phosphate transfer, it plays a role in regulation of intracellular reactions in the organism.
