Skin is susceptible to premature aging in response to ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced oxidative stress, which can ultimately result in aberrant aging or age-related disorders. Accordingly, strategies that can be adopted to mitigate oxidative stress may contribute to protecting skin from induced aging-related damage, thereby offering promising approaches for the treatment of skin diseases and disorders. In this regard, oroxylin A (OA), a natural flavonoid isolated from certain plants used in traditional Chinese medicine, is considered to have notable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties, and is often used to treat certain inflammatory diseases.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM)-mediated divalent mercury (Hg(II)) aging kinetics play a crucial role in controlling Hg(II) transformation and bioavailability in natural aquatic environments. However, the differential environmental behaviors of new and aged Hg(II) in a same reaction system remains unknown. In this study, multi-isotope tracing was used to investigate the impacts of binding site and sulfidation during DOM-mediated Hg(II) aging processes on Hg(II) reduction and microbial methylation in the same reaction system.

T14 is a 14mer peptide derived from the C-terminus of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Once cleaved, it is independently bioactive of the parent molecule and enhances calcium influx in different cell types, in a range of scenarios: it binds to an allosteric site selectively on the alpha-7 receptor, where it modulates calcium influx and is thus a potential trophic agent, as already reported in a range of normal developmental scenarios. However, if inappropriately activated, this erstwhile beneficial effect converts to a toxic one, resulting in pathologies as disparate as Alzheimer's and various metastatic cancers.

Introduction: The analysis of the role of the mitochondria in oxidative damage and skin aging has been a significant aspect of dermatological research. Mitochondria generate most reactive oxygen species (ROS) which, in excess, are cytotoxic and DNA-damaging and promote (photo-)aging. However, ROS also possesses key physiological and regulatory functions and mitochondrial dysfunction is prominent in several not primarily senescence-associated skin diseases and skin cancers.

Collagen is the major structural protein in the extracellular matrix of skin produced by fibroblasts. UV exposure results in infiltration of neutrophils within the epidermis and dermis, inducing collagen damage and contributing to the process of photo-aging. Collagen-3 is an integral structural component with collagen-1, and is an important regulator of collagen-1 fibrillogenesis.

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) have been identified as a potentially ideal cell type for use in regenerative therapeutic contexts owing to their excellent paracrine secretory abilities and other desirable properties. Previous work has shown that stem cell-derived exosomes can effectively reduce skin aging, but few studies have specifically focused on the role of UCMSC-derived exosomes in this context. In this study, we isolated exosomes derived from UCMSCs grown in a three-dimensional culture system and explored their ability to modulate the photo-aging of HaCaT keratinocytes.

In this study, a new photo-aging pathway in the aquatic environments and the underlying transformation mechanism were described for polyvinyl chloride microplastic (PVC-MP). Our results indicated that the photo-aging of PVC-MP was strongly dependent on particle size and the aging reaction could be facilitated in the presence of low-molecular-weight organic acid (LMWOA) and LMWOA-Fe(III) complex under simulated and natural sunlight irradiation and ambient conditions. The hydroxyl radical (OH•) generated from the photolysis of LMWOA or its ferric complexes played a dominant role in enhancing PVC-MP degradation.

It is well known that ultraviolet light activates mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase by increasing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the body, enhancing activating protein 1(AP-1) complexes (c-Jun and c-Fos), increasing matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and degrading collagen and elastin. In this study, we confirmed that polyphenolic rich (SS) stem extracts suppressed ultraviolet (UV)-induced photo-aging. The major active components of SS stem extracts were identified as gallic acid, catechin, vanillic acid, syringic acid and epicatechin.

In the first review, we summarized the biological effects of the xanthophyll carotenoid astaxanthin (AX) to prevent UV-induced cutaneous inflammation, abnormal keratinization, pigmentation, and wrinkling in a manner independent of the depletion of reactive oxygen species. In this manuscript, we review what is known about the intracellular signaling mechanisms that are involved in those effects in keratinocytes and in melanocytes. Our research has characterized the intracellular stress signaling mechanism(s) that are involved in the up-regulated expression of genes encoding cyclooxygenase (COX2), interleukin (IL)-8, granulocyte macrophage colony stimulatory factor (GM-CSF), and transglutaminase (TGase)1 in UVB-exposed keratinocytes as well as in the stimulated transcription and/or translation of melanogenic factors, including microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), in stem cell factor (SCF)-treated melanocytes.
