Significant pharmacokinetic variation occurs in critically ill patients, leading to underexposure to antibiotics and poor prognosis. In this study, we developed a simple, sensitive, and fast liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS) platform for the simultaneous quantification of 8 antibacterial and 2 antifungal drugs, which is optimally suited for clinically efficient, real-time therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). Multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mass spectrometry was used in this method, and samples were prepared via protein precipitation with methanol.

Department of Physics and International Laser Center, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Leninskie Gory 1, Moscow 19991, Russia.

Advanced sensing devices based on metasurfaces have emerged as a revolutionary platform for innovative label-free biosensors, holding promise for early diagnostics and the detection of low-concentration analytes. Here, we developed a chip-based ultrasensitive terahertz (THz) metasensor, leveraging a quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) to address the challenges associated with intricate operations in trace biochemical detection. The metasensor design features an open-ring resonator metasurface, which supports magnetic dipole -BIC combining functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) bound with a specific antibody.

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is the standard method for diagnosing left atrial appendage (LAA) hypercoagulability in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), which means LAA thrombus/sludge, dense spontaneous echo contrast and slow LAA blood flow velocity (< 0.25 m/s). Based on machine learning algorithms, cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) radiomics features were adopted to construct prediction models and explore a suitable approach for diagnosing LAA hypercoagulability and adjusting anticoagulation.

Objective: To investigate the association between syndesmophytes and facet joint (FJ) lesions in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and to identify clinical factors associated with FJ ankylosis (FJA) in thoracic segment.

Methods: Ninety-seven patients with AS who underwent thoracic spine computed tomography (CT) or chest CT and without completely thoracic spine fusion were included. FJ lesions were analyzed for the numbers and distribution of normal, ankylosis, erosions, joint-space narrowing, osteophytes, and subchondral sclerosis.

  • This study looked at how a protein called LTBP2 affects brain aneurysms in rats.
  • Researchers used special techniques to change the levels of LTBP2 and another protein called FGF2 and observed changes in the rats' blood vessels and cells.
  • They found that reducing LTBP2 helped the blood vessels grow better and reduced cell death, while increasing LTBP2 had the opposite effects.

CD24-Targeted NIR-II Fluorescence Imaging Enables Early Detection of Colorectal Neoplasia.

Cancer Res

December 2024

CAS Key Laboratory of Molecular Imaging, Beijing Key Laboratory of Molecular Imaging, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Colorectal cancer remains a significant health challenge despite improved screening techniques, as traditional methods like white-light colonoscopy often miss flat lesions that can lead to advanced tumors.
  • - A new near-infrared fluorescent probe targeting CD24 has been developed, showing high sensitivity (92%) and specificity (92%) for detecting colorectal cancer, including small lesions under 1 mm, which are typically overlooked.
  • - This study's results suggest that CD24-targeted NIR-II imaging could greatly enhance early detection of colorectal cancer during procedures like colonoscopy, potentially identifying precancerous lesions that other methods fail to see.

Huperzine A (Hup A), an extract from Huperzia serrata, exerted its anti-inflammation and anti-oxidation effect to protect against neurodegenerative disorders and organ injury. Ferroptosis was indicated to involve in the development of acute lung injury (ALI) accompanying by lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS) overexpressed. However, there is little research focused on the protective effect of Hup A on ALI, and the underlying molecular mechanism remains elusive.

Department of Cardiology, Xijing Hospital, The Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • * It analyzed data from 1,547 patients and 111 operators who participated in the RECORD study in China, finding that performing at least 32 LAAOs per year significantly lowers risks compared to those with less experience.
  • * The results indicate that a less experienced group (performing <32 LAAOs annually) had a 1.8 times higher risk of adverse outcomes, but this risk decreased as operators completed more procedures.

Template-based synergy extrapolation analysis for prediction of muscle excitations.

Physiol Meas

October 2024

The College of Biomedical Engineering and Instrument Science, Biosensor National Special Laboratory, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, People's Republic of China.

Accurate prediction of unmeasured muscle excitations can reduce the required wearable surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors, which is a critical factor in the study of physiological measurement. Synergy extrapolation uses synergy excitations as building blocks to reconstruct muscle excitations. However, the practical application of synergy extrapolation is still limited as the extrapolation process utilizes unmeasured muscle excitations it seeks to reconstruct.

  • The study investigates the genetic variants TLR4 Asp299Gly and Thr399Ile in relation to sepsis, highlighting contradictory findings from previous research.
  • A meta-analysis was performed on 13 studies involving over 4,800 participants, suggesting that the Asp299Gly variant might offer a slight protective effect against sepsis, although results were not statistically significant.
  • The authors stress the need for more extensive research with larger and more varied populations to confirm these potential associations and clarify the role of TLR4 polymorphisms in sepsis.

  • Researchers wanted to find out if using cannabis changes the brain's structure, but past studies were confusing due to other factors.
  • They used special genetic data to see if there really is a cause-and-effect relationship between cannabis use and brain areas.
  • While some small changes were found in specific brain regions, overall, there’s not enough proof to say that cannabis use definitely changes brain structure.

November 2024

Senior Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, the Sixth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital, Chinese PLA Medical School, No. 28 Fuxing Road, Haidian District, Beijing 100853, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined risk factors for recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury after microwave ablation (MWA) of thyroid nodules and recovery time for hoarseness post-procedure.
  • The analysis included 1,216 patients from five hospitals, focusing on nodule characteristics and their impact on hoarseness, particularly the distance from nodules to the tracheoesophageal groove (TEG-D) and posterior capsule distance (PCD).
  • Findings showed that closer nodules (TEG-D ≤ 2 mm) correlated with longer recovery times from hoarseness, highlighting TEG-D as a crucial risk factor for both injury and recovery in MWA procedures.
