Article Synopsis
  • Pruritus, particularly chronic post-burn pruritus (CPBP), is an itch that lasts for over six weeks due to skin damage and abnormal healing, with unknown brain mechanisms contributing to the condition.
  • A study involving 20 CPBP patients and 20 healthy controls used resting-state fMRI to analyze brain activity through various measures while accounting for factors like age.
  • Results indicated significant brain activity differences in CPBP patients, including higher regional homogeneity (ReHo) in various areas such as the middle frontal gyrus, and increased amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), suggesting altered brain function related to ongoing itch sensation.

Objectives: Despite the potential spillover effect, the optimal duration of dual antiplatelet therapy for minor stroke within 72 hours of symptom onset is still uncertain.

Methods: Safety and Efficacy of Aspirin-Clopidogrel in Acute Noncardiogenic Minor Ischemic Stroke (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score≤5) is a prospective cohort study involving patients with minor ischaemic stroke within 72 hours of symptom onset. The DAPT group was further categorised into three subgroups: shorter duration (<10 days), short duration (10-21 days) and long duration (>21 days).

Background: Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies in men worldwide, and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening is widely used for its early detection. Drug use may affect PSA levels, but the effect for most drugs is currently unknown.

Methods: This study first investigated drugs related to PSA changes through the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERs) database, and then used a Mendelian randomization (MR) method to explore the causal relationship between specific drugs and PSA changes using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) data.

Electronic address:

Club cell secretory protein (CC16) is considered a biological marker indicating lung epithelial and lung permeability. The joint effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure on CC16 levels and the association between CC16 levels and long-term lung function changes lacks epidemiological evidence. To investigate the effect of PAHs exposure on plasma CC16 levels and the association between CC16 levels and long-term lung function changes, this study enrolled 307 coke oven workers in 2014, measured their baseline concentrations of urinary PAHs metabolites and plasma CC16, with follow-up after nine years.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia among the elderly population, posing a significant public health challenge due to limited therapeutic options that merely delay cognitive decline. AD is associated with impaired energy metabolism and reduced neurotrophic signaling. The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling pathway, crucial for central nervous system (CNS) development, metabolism, repair, cognition, and emotion regulation, includes IGF-1, IGF-2, IGF-1R, IGF-2R, insulin receptor (IR), and six insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs).

Aim: We aimed to assess the association between non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) and symptomatic intracranial artery stenosis (sICAS), as well as the impact of non-HDL-C on recurrent vascular events in patients with mild ischemic stroke ( NIHSS score ≤ 5).

Methods: This prospective study was based on data from patients presenting within 72 hours of stroke occurrence. We included patients admitted to 8 Chinese hospitals between September 2019 and November 2021.

Background: Although liver metabolic dysfunction has been found to potentially elevate susceptibility to cognitive impairment and dementia, there is still insufficient evidence to explore the non-linear association of liver enzymes with cognitive performance. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the non-linear relationship between liver enzymes and cognitive performance.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 2764 individuals aged ≥ 60 who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) between 2011 and 2014 were included.

Article Synopsis
  • Statins are commonly used to prevent further strokes in patients with mild ischemic stroke, but it is unclear if higher doses are beneficial in Asian populations.
  • A study comparing high-dose and moderate-dose statins found no significant difference in stroke recurrence rates at 3 and 12 months, suggesting both doses are similarly effective.
  • However, high-dose statins were linked to a higher risk of intracranial hemorrhage, indicating potential safety concerns with more intensive treatment.

Background: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been associated with migraine, cryptogenic stroke (CS), and hypoxemia. However, which examination method is most reliable remains controversial. This study sought to investigate the diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (cU), including contrast-enhanced transcranial Doppler (cTCD), contrast transthoracic echocardiography (cTTE), and contrast transesophageal echocardiography (cTEE), for PFO; and to determine the best diagnostic strategy.

Chronic Dis Transl Med

June 2024

Department of Occupational Health, School of Public Health, Shanxi Key Laboratory of Environmental Health Impairment and Prevention, MOE Key Laboratory of Coal Environmental Pathogenicity and Prevention Shanxi Medical University Taiyuan Shanxi China.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined the link between plasma aluminum levels and hypertension among 476 male workers at an aluminum factory, finding that 23.9% had hypertension.
  • - Workers exposed to higher plasma aluminum concentrations showed significantly increased hypertension risks, with those in the highest exposure groups having risks over 7 times greater than the lowest group.
  • - Additionally, factors like long-term aluminum exposure, smoking, drinking, and age over 50 amplified the risk, indicating a critical relationship between aluminum exposure and hypertension in occupational settings.

Faced with rising threats of terrorism, environmental and health risks, achieving sensitive and selective detection of peroxide-based explosives (PEs) has become a global focus. In this study, a turn-on fluorescent probe (BOD) based on benzil (HO-recognition element) and 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3,4-diaza--indacene (BODIPY) derivative (fluorophore) was developed to sensitively and specifically detect hydrogen peroxide (HO). The synthesized BOD had a very weak fluorescence due to intramolecular donor-excited photo-induced electron transfer (-PET) effect; however, it could emit a strong fluorescence since HO selectively oxidized the benzil moiety and released free BODIPY fluorophore (BOD-COOH).

Epidemiological studies from diverse global regions suggest a correlation between the accumulation of aluminum in the brain and the onset of various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, of which, neuronal cells death happen. Our previous research has found the potential of aluminum to induce neuronal cell death. A comprehensive exploration of the regulatory pathways influenced by aluminum in neuronal cell death could contribute to the development of strategies aimed at preventing the detrimental impact of aluminum on neuronal cells.

Background: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a common cause of neck pain, which is a global public health problem. Because MPS does not present morphological changes within lesioned muscles, there are no imaging diagnostic criteria for this condition. In this study, we evaluate elasticity changes in upper trapezius muscles most frequently involved in cervical MPS using real-time ultrasound shear-wave elastography, and we examine their potential diagnostic value.

Aluminum (Al) is recognized as a neurotoxin. Studies have confirmed that the neurotoxicity induced by Al may be related to tau hyperphosphorylation. Phosphorylated tau is degraded through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (UPP), in which the carboxyl terminus of Hsc70-interacting protein (CHIP) plays an important role.
