Background: It is thought that there is a high risk of zinc deficiency in India, but there are no representative national estimates.

Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the national and state-level prevalence of low serum zinc concentrations (SZCs) in Indian children from the nationally representative Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey.

Methods: Prevalence of low SZC, adjusted for C-reactive protein, was estimated among preschool (1-4 y; n = 7874) and school-age children (5-9 y; n = 10,430) and adolescents (10-19 y; n = 10,140), using SZC cutoffs defined by the International Zinc Nutrition Consultative Group.

Objective: The prevalence of anemia has remained high among Indian adolescent girls over the past decade, despite the ongoing iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation program. This study was conducted to assess the impact of daily supplementation of a package of IFA with vitamin B on hemoglobin levels among adolescent girls.

Methods: A community-based cluster-randomized trial was conducted in the rural block of Faridabad District, Haryana, India in the year 2017.

From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution.

Article Synopsis
  • The Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative is a global project with trials designed to see if interventions starting before conception can lower the chances of non-communicable diseases in children, specifically detailing the Indian study.
  • In Mysore, around 6,000 women will participate in a cluster-randomized trial with three groups focusing on different stages of pregnancy; the intervention includes nutritional support, parenting programs, lifestyle changes, and pollution reduction.
  • The main goal is to measure children's fat mass at age 5, while also looking at various health markers and outcomes, with plans to share findings with relevant policymakers and publish results in academic journals.

Aims: To evaluate the quality of care in known diabetes patients of Delhi.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a two-stage cluster design. In all, 30 of 150 wards were chosen in Stage 1 (using a random computer-generated seed value and then selecting wards at a predefined sampling interval; Probability Proportionate to Size-Systematic) and one colony from each ward was selected randomly in Stage 2.

Background: Biochemical vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is believed to be a serious public health problem (low serum retinol prevalence >20%) in Indian children, justifying universal high-dose vitamin A supplementation (VAS).

Objective: To evaluate in Indian children younger than 5 y the risk of biochemical VAD from the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey, as well as dietary vitamin A inadequacy and excess over the tolerable upper limit of intake (TUL) from national and subnational surveys, factoring in fortification and VAS.

Methods: Child serum retinol data, corrected for inflammation, were examined to evaluate national- and state-level prevalence of VAD.

Objective: To identify predictors of recovery in children with uncomplicated severe acute malnutrition (SAM).

Design: This is a secondary data analysis from an individual randomised controlled trial, where children with uncomplicated SAM were randomised to three feeding regimens, namely ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) sourced from Compact India, locally prepared RUTF or augmented home-prepared foods, under two age strata (6-17 months and 18-59 months) for 16 weeks or until recovery. Three sets of predictors that could influence recovery, namely child, family and nutritional predictors, were analysed.

Inflammation correction in micronutrient deficiency with censored inflammatory biomarkers.

Am J Clin Nutr

January 2021

Department of Biostatistics, St John's Medical College, St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore, India.

Background: Biomarkers of micronutrient status vary with inflammation, and can be corrected by a regression-based approach [Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia (BRINDA)] using measured concentrations of inflammation biomarkers, e.g., C-reactive protein (CRP) and/or α1-acid-glycoprotein (AGP).

Background: Stunting is determined by using the World Health Organization (WHO) child growth standard which was developed using precise measurements. However, it is unlikely that large scale surveys maintain the same level of rigour and precision when measuring the height of children. The population measure of stunting in children is sensitive to over-dispersion, and the high prevalence of stunting observed in surveys in low and middle-income countries (LMIC) could partly be due to lower measurement precison.

Background: In 2015, senior consultants at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research saw several sick children in their outpatient clinics for which they had been seen in the emergency department the previous day. These children seemed to require admission but were sent home. This prompted us to review the paediatric care provided in our emergency department.

Effect of home-based newborn care on neonatal and infant mortality: a cluster randomised trial in India.

BMJ Glob Health

September 2020

Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health (SEARCH), Gadchiroli, India.

Background: Home-based newborn care has been found to reduce neonatal mortality in rural areas. Study evaluated effectiveness of home-based care delivered by specially recruited newborn care workers- Shishu Rakshak (SR) and existing workers- anganwadi workers (AWW) in reducing neonatal and infant mortality rates.

Methods: This three-arm, community-based, cluster randomised trial was conducted in five districts in India.

Background: In line with global trends, India has witnessed a sharp rise in caesarean section (CS) deliveries, especially in the private sector. Despite the urgent need for change, there are few published examples of private hospitals that have successfully lowered their CS rates. Our hospital, serving private patients too, had a CS rate of 79% in 2001.

Background: Anaemia is a serious public health concern in India. However, national estimates for its prevalence are not available for the 5-14 years age group, nor are estimates available for the types of anaemia among children and adolescents (1-19 years). We aimed to assess the prevalence of anaemia among children and adolescents in India and to categorise types of anaemia on the basis of micronutrient deficiencies.

Introduction: Vitamin B deficiency is widely prevalent across many low- and middle-income countries, especially where the diet is low in animal sources. While many observational studies show associations between B deficiency in pregnancy and infant cognitive function (including memory, language and motor skills), evidence from clinical trials is sparse and inconclusive.

Methods And Analysis: This double-blind, multicentre, randomised controlled trial will enrol 720 vegetarian pregnant women in their first trimester from antenatal clinics at two hospitals (one in India and one in Nepal).

Coronavirus outbreak has affected thousands of people in at least 186 countries which has affected the cancer care delivery system apart from affecting the overall health system. Cancer patients are more susceptible to coronavirus infection than individuals without cancer as they are in an immunosuppressive state because of the malignancy and anticancer treatment. Oncologists should be more attentive to detect coronavirus infection early, as any type of advanced cancer is at much higher risk for unfavorable outcomes.

In early 2013, several outpatients at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research in New Delhi, India complained that their laboratory results were not ready at the promised time. We reviewed the data for 3 months and learnt that 16% of outpatient results were not ready when patients returned to receive them. We formed a multidisciplinary team to fix the problem.
