The history of saline nasal irrigation (SNI) is indeed a long one, beginning from the ancient Ayurvedic practices and gaining a foothold in the west at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, there is a growing number of papers covering the effects of SNI, from in vitro studies to randomized clinical trials and literature overviews. Based on the recommendations of most of the European and American professional associations, seawater, alone or in combination with other preparations, has its place in the treatment of numerous conditions of the upper respiratory tract (URT), primarily chronic (rhino)sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, acute URT infections and postoperative recovery.

Background: The flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been described as a unidirectional system with the choroid plexus serving as the primary secretor of CSF and the arachnoid granulations as primary reabsorption site. This theory of neurosurgical forefathers has been universally adopted and taught as dogma. Many neuroscientists have found difficulty reconciling this theory with common pathologies, and recent studies have found that this "classic" hypothesis may not represent the full picture.

Background: Bipolar or "kissing" cartilage lesions formed on 2 opposite articular surfaces of the knee joint are commonly listed as exclusion criteria for advanced cartilage therapies.
Purpose: To test, in a pilot large-animal study, whether autologous nasal chondrocyte (NC)-based tissue engineering, recently introduced for the treatment of focal cartilage injuries, could provide a solution for challenging kissing lesions.
Study Design: Controlled laboratory study.
Jacopo Berengario da Carpi was Renaissance-era physician, surgeon, and anatomy lecturer who transformed medieval anatomy and surgery-which were, at the time, dominated mostly by religious dogma-into a modern science based on direct observation, experience, and cadaveric dissection. He was an accomplished and innovative neuroanatomist and educator, a prolific researcher and publisher, and a successful practicing surgeon who treated the head injuries of many renowned patients of that period. He published a landmark commentary on skull fractures that was the first printed book in history devoted to head injuries, which became a model of new medical understanding.

There is a possibility that Count Ivan VIII Drašković (1740-1787), a member of one of the oldest and most famous Croatian noble families, had Graves' disease and suffered from a thyroid disorder. Our suspicions were aroused by certain data, including his personal history, his lifestyle, including use of tobacco and iodine, as well as stress, and, finally, two portraits. If he was affected by Graves' disease and orbitopathy, his poor health might have been a consequence of thyroid disease, which was further worsened by injury and tobacco use.

Ambroise Paré was celebrated surgeon of the 16th century whose practical accomplishments, books, and ideas transformed surgery and was a precursor for the later development of neurosurgery. He developed many surgical innovations related to wound management, arterial ligation for the prevention of hemorrhage during limb amputations, and the treatment of war-related head and spine injuries. He maintained that a surgeon should operate gently to reduce pain and improve outcome, and he dedicated his career to the wounded, sick, and poor.

In recent years, evidence supporting the theory of obesity paradox has increased, showing that obese/overweight people with prevalent chronic diseases experience lower mortality compared with patients of normal weight. So far, evidence is most comprehensive in cardiovascular and chronic renal diseases; however, published studies are prone to many biases, enabling us to reach a definite conclusion. Available data in chronic liver disease is scarce and ambiguous.

This study investigated the influence of refugee status on the occurrence of enuresis. It was performed among school children aged 6 to 11 years and their parents in the Vukovarsko-srijemska County (eastern Croatia), which had many displaced persons and refugees (mostly women and children) in the 1990s due to the wars in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. A specially designed questionnaire (about the child's age and gender, the child's enuresis history and that of the parents, and data on parental refugee status in childhood) was completed by one of the parents.

Cancer/testis antigens (CTAs) are a large family of tumor-associated antigens expressed in human tumors of different histological origin, but not in normal tissues, with the exception of the testes and placenta. Numerous immunohistochemical studies have reported associations between CTA expression and a negative estrogen receptor (ER) status in breast tumors, and demonstrated that CTAs are frequently expressed in tumors with higher nuclear grade. The expression of CTAs has not been studied as extensively in ductal carcinoma (DCIS) as it has been in invasive breast cancer.

Previous studies have identified many genetic loci for refractive error and myopia. We aimed to investigate the effect of these loci on ocular biometry as a function of age in children, adolescents, and adults. The study population consisted of three age groups identified from the international CREAM consortium: 5,490 individuals aged <10 years; 5,000 aged 10-25 years; and 16,274 aged >25 years.

Despite some reports, the usefulness of levothyroxine (LT(4)) and levotriiodothyronine (LT(3)) combination therapy in hypothyroidism remains controversial. The objective of this paper is to study a benefit of additional LT(3) in athyreotic patients who failed to normalize TSH on LT(4) alone even with hyperthyroid serum T(4) values. In a survey of 200 athyreotic patients treated between 2006 and 2009, about 7% failed to normalize serum TSH levels following treatment with LT(4), though serum T(4) values in the hyperthyroid range were achieved.
