Department of Orthopaedics, Szent-Györgyi Albert Clinical Center, University of Szeged, Semmelweis Street 6, 6725, Szeged, Hungary,

Background: Orally administered chemical thromboprophylactic agents for total hip replacement (THR) have become popular in recent years. Certain clinical trials suggest that the efficacy and the risk of major bleeding after administration of direct thrombin inhibitor dabigatran etexilate are equivalent to the clinical trial comparator, subcutaneous low-molecular-weight heparin enoxaparin. Our aim was to compare and evaluate the incidence of minor haemorrhagic and soft-tissue adverse effects of enoxaparin and dabigatran.

PID controller auto-tuning based on process step response and damping optimum criterion.

ISA Trans

January 2014

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, I. Lučića 5, HR-10000 Zagreb, Croatia. Electronic address:

This paper presents a novel method of PID controller tuning suitable for higher-order aperiodic processes and aimed at step response-based auto-tuning applications. The PID controller tuning is based on the identification of so-called n-th order lag (PTn) process model and application of damping optimum criterion, thus facilitating straightforward algebraic rules for the adjustment of both the closed-loop response speed and damping. The PTn model identification is based on the process step response, wherein the PTn model parameters are evaluated in a novel manner from the process step response equivalent dead-time and lag time constant.

The prevalence of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis is gradually decreasing in poultry flocks in the EU, which may result in the demand for a vaccine that allows for the differentiation of vaccinated flocks from those infected by wild-type S. Enteritidis. In this study, we therefore constructed a (Salmonella Pathogenicity Island 1) SPI1-lon mutant with or without fliC encoding for S.

The characterization of the immune response of chickens to Salmonella infection is usually limited to the quantification of expression of genes coding for cytokines, chemokines or antimicrobial peptides. However, processes occurring in the cecum of infected chickens are likely to be much more diverse. In this study we have therefore characterized the transcriptome and proteome in the chicken cecum after infection with Salmonella Enteritidis.

In this study we were interested in the serovar cross-protection potential of Salmonella Pathogenicity Island 1 (SPI1) attenuated vaccine strains of Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium and immune response of vaccinated and naive chickens to Salmonella infection. The immune response was characterized by real time PCR quantifying transcripts of interleukins IL1β, IL17, IL22, interferon gamma (IFNγ), inducible NO synthase (iNOS), immunoglobulins IgM, IgA, IgY and Ig light chain, and six genes of acute phase response including avidin, serum amyloid A, extracellular fatty acid-binding protein (Ex-FABP), immune responsive gene 1, chemokine AH221 and trappin-6. Vaccination with SPI1 mutants of both serovars protected chickens against Salmonella infection, independent of the serovar used for the challenge and the time post infection.

Prolonged QT interval is a predictor of cardiovascular mortality. It indicates delayed repolarization of ventricular myocardium and is considered a precursor of malignant cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Increased cardiovascular risk (CVR) in the presence of prolonged QT interval, corrected by heart rate (QTc), is attributed to ventricular electrical instability.

November 2012

Dr. Ivo Pedisić, General Hospital, Department of ENT Surgery, Sisak, Croatia.

In 1969 Dabska and her colleagues described for the first time this rare malignant tumour, also later known as a malignant endovascular papillary angioendothelioma of childhood. Overall, depending amongst other factors on its location, it is thought to have a generally favourable prognosis and a wide local excision seems to be the treatment of choice. We here present a very rare and unusual case of a 63 year old woman with a 20 year history of slow-growing right buccal dermatological lesion which resembled a common mole.
