The diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the axilla in breast cancer patients has changed significantly over the past 30 years, with the replacement of complete axillary lymph node dissection practices by less invasive approaches. Reference is made to clinical findings that have led to practical treatment recommendations and are paving the way to new levels of de-escalation in breast cancer surgery.

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in attachment dimensions and the perceived parental acceptance / rejection among adolescents with conduct disorder (CD) in comparison to the control group, and the contribution of the attachment dimensions and parental acceptance /rejection to the CD. The group of male and female adolescents with CD (N=97) and a control group of male and female adolescents with no signs of CD (N=97) participated in this study. Attachment and parental acceptance/rejection were determined in the relationship between adolescents and their mothers and fathers by using self-evaluation questionnaires.

Background: PRODUODOPA is a combination of foscarbidopa and foslevodopa indicated for the treatment of motor fluctuations in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease when available combinations of peroral drugs have not given satisfactory results. The solution is administered via subcutaneous infusion, most frequently in the abdomen, using an infusion pump. The study results showed a significant effect on the reductions in off time and higher control of motor symptoms without troublesome dyskinesia.

Background: The use of whole blood compared with a balanced ratio of components in trauma resuscitation remains an area of ongoing investigation. One factor that may affect outcomes is the age of the blood product transfused. We used a murine model of blood banking and hemorrhagic shock resuscitation to compare the effect of storage duration in whole blood and packed red blood cells on the recipient inflammatory response.

Honey has been recognized as a reliable indicator of environmental quality because of honeybees' intense foraging activity, which brings them into contact with many persistent organic pollutants around the hive. In this study, four types of honey (meadow, acacia, chestnut, and honey in comb) collected at three different locations were analyzed for Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn levels. The highest levels of Fe and Cu in chestnut honey, Co and Zn in meadow honey, and Pb in honey in comb were observed in Varaždin County.

Dental technology has developed materials for prosthetics that are very similar to natural teeth and offer a good balance between durability and esthetics; however, some of these materials are not very color-stable under the influence of external factors. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine and compare the color change (∆E) of different esthetic monolithic monochromatic CAD/CAM materials after they have been thermocycled and treated with staining solutions. The color parameters were determined using a spectrophotometer on a white and black background.

Introduction: Sarcopenia has been shown to portend worse outcomes in injured patients; however, little is known about the impact of thoracic muscle wasting on outcomes of patients with chest wall injury. We hypothesized that reduced pectoralis muscle mass is associated with poor outcomes in patients with severe blunt chest wall injury.

Methods: All patients admitted to the intensive care unit between 2014 and 2019 with blunt chest wall injury requiring mechanical ventilation were retrospectively identified.

Adequate vitamin D (VD) intake during pregnancy is needed for fetal development and maternal health maintenance. However, while there is no doubt regarding its importance, there is not a unified recommendation regarding adequate intake. The main aim of our study was to measure the VD serum level of studied women, together with its potential influencing factors: demographic (i.

  • Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects the eyes and can cause vision problems and skin changes like vitiligo (white patches on the skin).
  • It often happens in people with a certain genetic background, especially those from Asian or Hispanic backgrounds.
  • A case of a 40-year-old woman with VKH showed eye pain, vision loss, and vitiligo, along with other symptoms like redness in her eyes and swelling around the optic nerve.

January 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, UHC Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia.

Background: Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is an inherited autosomal recessive iron metabolism disorder resulting from a C282Y mutation in the gene. Mutations in the gene may result in iron accumulation and oxidative stress in the retina, resulting in macular degeneration. This article describes two patients with HH who were treated with erythrocytapheresis or phlebotomy, with no exposure to deferoxamine or any other chelation therapy, and who developed visual symptoms.

is a well-known zoonotic pathogen that can cause disease in both animals and humans. Moreover, it has a high bioterrorism potential as its lethal spores are resistant to inactivation, are easy to produce in large quantities, and are easily spread over large areas. Anthrax cases occur in different parts of the world, including most European countries.

Introduction: Whole blood resuscitation for hemorrhagic shock in trauma represents an opportunity to correct coagulopathy in trauma while also supplying red blood cells. The production of microvesicles in stored whole blood and their effect on its hemostatic parameters have not been described in previous literature. We hypothesized that microvesicles in aged stored whole blood are procoagulant and increase thrombin production via phosphatidylserine.

Introduction: The use of packed red blood cells (pRBCs) for resuscitation is limited by the red blood cell storage lesion, a series of biochemical and physiological changes that occur during the storage and aging of blood. Microvesicles (MVs) shed from pRBCs during this process are one component of the red blood cell storage lesion and lead to acute lung injury and pulmonary vascular microthrombi. We hypothesized that MVs from stored pRBCs lead to the release of P-selectin and von Willebrand factor (vWF) from endothelial cells and that this mechanism is mediated via activation of protein kinase C (PKC) or protein kinase A (PKA).

  • The epidermis protects the body and heals injuries through a complex keratinization process that involves the shedding of dead skin cells known as desquamation.
  • Keratinocyte differentiation is influenced by several factors including growth factors and changes in vitamin A and calcium levels, which help transform basal cells into fully differentiated corneocytes.
  • Skin keratinization disorders can lead to various dermatological diseases, categorized based on specific defects in keratin structure and the regulation of the keratinization process.

Excelsus Structural Solutions (Swiss) AG, PARK INNOVAARE, 5234 Villigen, Switzerland.

Synchrotron radiation offers a host of advanced properties, surpassing conventional laboratory sources with its high brightness, tunable phonon energy, photon beam coherence for advanced X-ray imaging, and a structured time profile, ideal for capturing dynamic atomic and molecular processes. However, these benefits come at the cost of operational complexity and expenses. Three decades ago, synchrotron radiation facilities, while technically open to all scientists, primarily served a limited community.

: This study reports a case of a 62-year-old patient experiencing a significant decline in vision over the past three months. The initial best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/20 in both eyes diminished to 20/200 in the right eye (RE) and counting fingers (CF) in the left eye (LE) within this timeframe. The patient was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer just one month before the significant vision deterioration.
