Whey protein hydrolysates, derived from enzymatic hydrolysis of whey protein isolates or concentrates, offer enhanced bioavailability and solubility compared to intact whey protein. In this study, whey protein hydrolysates (WPHs) having different hydrolysis degrees (5%, 10%, and 15%) were produced and muffin cakes were enriched with the addition of WPHs. In general, the addition of WPHs showed a significant effect on oil and protein content while the emulsion activity was improved with the increased hydrolysis degree (HD).

September 2024

Laboratory of Agrozoology, Department of Plants and Crops, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Ghent University, Coupure Links 653, 9000 Ghent, Belgium. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Varroa destructor is a major reason for colony collapse disorder, and amitraz is a commonly used chemical treatment, but resistance is increasing globally.* -
  • A study screened the Octβ2R receptor in Varroa populations from Turkey and Belgium, discovering a novel mutation (Y337F) linked to amitraz resistance, particularly in Turkish samples.* -
  • Mites with the Y337F mutation showed over 8-fold resistance to amitraz, and further experiments using CRISPR-Cas9 confirmed this mutation’s role in resistance, highlighting the need for more research on its impact on treatment strategies.*

Department of Histology and Embryology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Dicle University, Diyarbakir, Turkey.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family members are responsible for endothelial cells' growth, proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, vascular permeability, and differentiation and proliferation of non-endothelial cell types. VEGF and its receptors are found in mammalian lymphoid organs. The present study was conceived to determine (a) the presence and localization of angiogenic VEGF and its receptors (Fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 [Flt1/fms], fetal liver kinase 1 [Flk1]/kinase insert domain receptor [KDR], Fms-like tyrosine kinase 4 [Flt4]) and vascular endothelial growth inhibitor (VEGI) in the quail spleen; and (b) whether their expressions in the spleen components change during the post-hatching growth of the organ, using immunohistochemistry.

Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman (Acari: Varroidae) is of paramount significance in modern beekeeping, with infestations presenting a primary challenge that directly influences colony health, productivity, and overall apicultural sustainability. In order to control this mite, many beekeepers rely on a limited number of approved synthetic acaricides, including the pyrethroids tau-fluvalinate, flumethrin and organophosphate coumaphos. However, the excessive use of these substances has led to the widespread development of resistance in various beekeeping areas globally.
