Background: Empagliflozin is a relatively newer glucose-lowering drug (GLD) with many extra-glycemic benefits. To date, no study has evaluated the efficacy and safety of empagliflozin in Bangladeshi patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of empagliflozin as an add-on to ongoing GLDs in Bangladeshi adults with uncontrolled T2DM.

The Outcome of Early Oral Feeding Following Elective Gastrointestinal Surgery.

Background Early oral feeding (EOF) after gastrointestinal (GI) surgery is an optimistic way to speed up recovery and shorten hospital stays, but its full effects remain unexplored. Aim This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of EOF in patients having elective gastrointestinal surgery. Methods This open-level, prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Department of Surgery at Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, Dhaka, from March 2022 to February 2023.

Purpose: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is common among children in Bangladesh. Its management depends mainly on risk stratification. This study aimed to assess the severity of pediatric AP using computed tomography (CT).

Evaluation of Serum CA 19-9 as a Diagnostic Marker for Pancreatic Malignancy.

In biliary-pancreatic malignancy, the serum CA 19-9 is considered as a tumor marker. Its high level may indicate the presence of a malignant disorder, but it can also be raised in benign conditions and also in malignancies from other organs. The value may be normal even in malignant condition.

Background: Infection prevention and control (IPC) is a critical component of delivering safe, effective and high-quality healthcare services, and eliminating avoidable healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in health facilities, predominantly in population-dense settings such as Bangladesh.

Aim: Our study aimed to assess the effect of an integrated intervention package in improving the IPC level of the health facilities in Bangladesh.

A case report on para-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis: an unresolved mystery.

Background: Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a dermatosis that occurs 2-3 years after an apparently successful treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). In rare cases, PKDL occurs concurrently with VL and is characterized by fever, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly or lymphadenopathy, and poor nutritional status and is known as Para-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (Para-KDL). Co-association of active VL in PKDL patients is documented in Africa, but very few case reports are found in South Asia.

Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), defined by the extreme manifestation of renal impairment in patients with cirrhosis, is characterized by reduced renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate. It is diagnosed with reduced kidney function confirming the absence of intrinsic kidney disease, such as hematuria or proteinuria. HRS is potentially reversible with liver transplantation or vasoconstrictor drugs.

Objective: The present study was designed to evaluate the role of the respiratory rate oxygenation (ROX) index in the assessment of the adequacy of non-invasive respiratory support the COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory failure and observe its outcome.

Materials And Methods: This cross-sectional, observational study was conducted between October 2020 and September 2021 in the Department of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, and Intensive Care Medicine of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Partial Sheehan's syndrome with abdominal tuberculosis presented with pancytopenia and fluctuating thyroid profile: a case report.

Unlabelled: Sheehan's syndrome is a well-recognized cause of panhypopituitarism secondary to pituitary apoplexy, followed by postpartum hemorrhage. Depending upon the degree of ischemic injury, it can be either partial or complete.

Case Presentation: We report an interesting case of a 35-year-old woman admitted to our hospital with complaints of abdominal distension, which was later presumed to be due to disseminated tuberculosis (TB) after excluding the possible differentials.

Introduction: Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a benign bone tumor typically seen in epiphysis or metaphysis of mature long bones. Multiple large multinucleated giant cells dispersed among mononuclear spindle cells and monocytes constitute characteristic histological background of GCT of bone (GCTB).

Background: Hypertension is a known risk factor for several chronic conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. However, little is known about its impact on Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the context of Bangladesh. This study aimed to evaluate the association of hypertension on HRQoL among Bangladeshi patients corresponding to the socio-demographic condition, comorbid conditions, treatment, and health outcomes.

Pancreaticobiliary diseases are the important causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Among the imaging modalities, Transabdominal ultrasound (TUS) is cheap, available, and noninvasive but it has some limitations. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is invasive but it has some diagnostic and therapeutic advantages over TUS.

There have been numerous studies about the health implication of COVID-19 on patients, but little attention has been paid to the impacts of the pandemic on physicians. Our paper attends to this gap by exploring the mental health of physicians in Bangladesh during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is particularly important since the mental health of physicians impacts not only on themselves, but also their professional performance and hence the care of patients.

A Ketogenic Diet Improves Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Bioenergetics via the PGC1α-SIRT3-UCP2 Axis.

A ketogenic diet (KD; high-fat, low-carbohydrate) can benefit refractory epilepsy, but underlying mechanisms are unknown. We used mice inducibly expressing a mutated form of the mitochondrial DNA repair enzyme UNG1 (mutUNG1) to cause progressive mitochondrial dysfunction selectively in forebrain neurons. We examined the levels of mRNAs and proteins crucial for mitochondrial biogenesis and dynamics.

Chikungunya outbreak (2017) in Bangladesh: Clinical profile, economic impact and quality of life during the acute phase of the disease.

Background: Chikungunya virus causes mosquito-transmitted infection that leads to extensive morbidity affecting substantial quality of life. Disease associated morbidity, quality of life, and financial loss are seldom reported in resources limited countries, such as Bangladesh. We reported the acute clinical profile, quality of life and consequent economic burden of the affected individuals in the recent chikungunya outbreak (May to September 2017) in Dhaka city, Bangladesh.

Recurrent Deep Vein Thrombosis due to Thrombophilia.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common condition that is often under-diagnosed. Acquired or hereditary defects of coagulation or a combination of these defects may facilitate the development of DVT. Recurrent DVT, a positive family history or unusual presentation may warrant investigation for hereditary thrombophilia.

To compare the efficacy of triple therapy with furazolidone, amoxicillin and omeprazole for two weeks and three weeks in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in Bangladeshi duodenal ulcer patients.

Helicobacter pylori eradication is the mainstay in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori associated peptic ulcer disease. Furazolidone was tried in several developing countries and showed good results in some trials. Increasing the duration of treatment has been shown to improve the eradication rate.

Comparative study between tubotympanic and atticoantral types of chronic suppurative otitis media.

This prospective study was done to compare the different aspects of tubotympanic (group I) and atticoantral types (group II) of chronic suppurative otitis media. The study included 200 patients of chronic suppurative otitis media, of them 100 were of tubotympanic type and 100 were with atticoantral disease. The age (mean +/- SD) of group I and II were 17 +/- 2.
